Retail sales of all kinds rose in December the largest increase in eight months. Automobile companies are optimistic and some economists are optimistic. For the second week in a row the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits is down.
An organization called The Food Research & Action (FRAC) center says that many kids who could get breakfast in the federally funded school breakfast program are not receiving it because fewer than half of the eligible schools have enrolled in the program.
In the 1992 Presidential Election, the New Hampshire primary is days away and the race is close. Governor Clinton of Arkansas was campaigning in an energetic crowd of high schoolers in a high school gym. Clinton is struggling to save his candidacy and has launched an advertising blitz to explain his Vietnam War draft record and blames, with no evidence, President Bush and the Republicans. Clinton has purchased two half hour blocks of television time in New Hampshire to discuss issues of importance to him.
Iowa Senator Tom Harkin’s campaign takes his campaign to the working class, proposing a “new new deal” with federally funded jobs program. Harkin proclaims himself a populist and a devout liberal. He speaks about cutting defense sending and using money for social programs.
