Top reasons to own an M35 Deuce and a Half

Marc William Hampton, former Army Sergeant, shares his top reasons why you should own an M35 'Deuce and a Half' truck.
M35's are a 2½-ton 6x6 cargo truck used by the United States Army dating back to the 1940's. Some of the newer models are still in use. 'Decommissioned' units are sold as surplus to military vehicle collectors and to persons or organizations looking for an inexpensive truck capable of off-road operation. They have developed a cult following
Guns com caught up with Hampton at the Knob Creek machine gun shoot in West Point, Kentucky in April 2017. He drives his M35 to the shoot twice a year and sleeps in it. Other people drive their trucks and they hang out and talk and work on them.
Hampton's truck is a M35A2 model built in 1971. It's all wheel drive, so neither snow nor rain slow him down.
It's got a 2 1/2 ton capacity off-road and a 5-ton on-road capacity. So, it will haul just about anything you want.
It has a 50-gallon diesel tank that burns a variety of fuels. Hampton uses motor oil cut with gasoline.
Power is derived from a multi-fuel Hercules in-line six cylinder engine that's turbo charged. It produces only about 187 horsepower, but it's got a boat-load of torque.
There's no air conditioning but the side and front windows open on the cab. This provides a great deal of air flow, especially at speed.
Insurance on an M35 in Kentucky is cheap - about $209 a year. This is mainly because not much can damage a Deuce and a Half. Hampton's been rear-ended and T-boned in his , and nothing happened. He fixed the damage with a spray can of paint. The other cars were totaled.
He daily-drives his M35 like other people drive a regular car. He'll take it to the corner store to get a pack of smokes.
It's obvious that Hampton loves his truck. 'I'll drive it until the wheels fall off.' he says. 'And I'll bolt them back on and keep going. That's the God's honest truth. This truck will live forever. It will live longer than me.'
Driving a Deuce and a Half is also a good way to buy America, says Hampton with a smile. 'You drive a Deuce and a Half, boom! 'I America'd today.'

About 30 years ago, I was coming back from a weekend in the field. The guy in the Deuce behind me, had a woman hit the front bumper with her Plymouth SW. Right there, where the front bumper has the bend in it, her car tore that weld loose, and bent the bumper the other way. She was able to drive away> Had I not seen the result and her car, I'd never believe it. (I didn't actually see the incident.) Yes, I STILL want a Deuce. With the turbo, and the multifuel engine. And, the real transmission. "You just shifted from second to fourth." "No, I just shifted from third to fourth. Fifth is up here." steve

20 years ago I saw 30 of these standing on reserve parking in Air Force Base I was serving, just sitting on sand under eucalyptus trees. The maintenance guy would start everyone of these trucks and drive forward and backward like 5 meters (like 20 feet) once a week. The guy would bring a paint bucket and would scrap off bad paint and paint with a freaking brush... We still got these in reserve duty. Every time there is a mess going on with reserve being called to duty, you can see these carrying army stuff, which happens too often here in Israel... Here we don't call these trucks deuce and a half, they are called Reo or Reos

I would imagine that tire replacement could be expensive. During WW2 and after the US military paid for research to come up with an engine that would burn any liquid fuel. In the early years of the research it was shown that the engine design would burn powdered coal or flour equally well. The design was finalized in the late 1970s as the TCCS. It would literally burn any liquid fuel, but most successfully diesel or gasoline. Some UPS trucks had a TCCS engines in them. The combustion chamber was actually in the piston rather than the cylinder head. CR was anywhere between 14 to 1 and 16 to 1.

@samueldamewood5273 6 лет назад
You need to do the scheduled maintenance and inspections, just like the book says. If you run it 8 hrs a day, you have about 3 hrs of stuff to do every week. Mind you if it is done, they will last forever. If not, you'll be cursing it every day. Go ahead and find a hard top, insulate it and put in a good seat. Route the exhaust back underneath like an A1 to maintain your sanity.Put drain holesin the corners of the bed or it'll rust through in no time. Make sure it has the manifold preheater and learn to use it, avoid the ether system like a plague.

Most of them you can find on GovPlanet for the price of a compact car from a dealership. But you can be lucky and find one used on either Craigslist or any other websites.

Yup. I America everyday. Daily drive my '69 Kaiser Jeep M35A2 w/w. I get free oil from guys at work and from a race track. Not to mention my kids love riding in it, they feel like the baddest kid on the block and I don't blame them, lol.

Finally wanted to ask you, what's your opinion on the multifuel, both the LDT and LDS? And do you still run them or swapped it for something else? I see you in the comments on a ton of videos
@toddk1377
@toddk1377 Год назад
@@hummerguy I like the multifuel engines. The LTD/LDS are the same other than a few minor differences, but these are good engines if used correctly. Keeping the rpm's in mind, fresh oil, and constant monitor of the engines temperature, there are very few issues these motors typically have and imo, the stock oil filters being a big one. The IP's can be issue but it's fairly uncommon if taken care of. I don't plan on swapping mine out. If anything, I can rebuild the motor with new gaskets and rod bearings, pistons/rings, and sleeves for under $1500 if I shop around. I don't mind the lack of power many have the reasoning for swapping the motors out for. The main factor being I'm familiar with the multifuel engines and the fact that it can save so much money on fuel with clean wmo, the slow speeds and lack of power imo is well worth it and that's what the deuce is. It's a bad ass underpowered military truck and if something with more umpth is required, then I'd get a 5 ton, but I like the deuce as is, I don't want it to be something it's not if that makes sense, it's all part of the experience I guess, lol.
@hummerguy
@hummerguy Год назад
@@toddk1377 Yea I pretty much agree, the only thing I've thought about is swapping my LDT out for a LDS since some of them are rated at 200hp and 440 Ft Ibs compared to the LDT 130hp and 330 Ft Ibs, Im not really sure what's all difference, all I really know is about the pistons being bigger and I think the crank. I got all spin on filters on mine, I have yet to turn the fuel up any, I kind of want to turn it up a little, I don't really know if it's going to make a huge difference in terms of making power, the max RPM I go to is usually around 2,000-2,100
@toddk1377
@toddk1377 Год назад
@@hummerguy Turning the fuel up can make a difference, enough difference to pull hills and such a lot easier, but you have to run a pyrometer if you do, the heat can exceed 1300°F and if so, you'll start damaging the pistons, melting one or more of those is no fun, lol, I've done it once when the head blew on mine long long time ago. One thing that helps though without fuel adjustment, if you can aquire it, run some jet fuel. That stuff is more powerful than diesel. A good blend of wmo with gas and diesel can do similar if the blend is right, but jet fuel is clear so it's very dry, I did a 50-50 blend of wmo to jet fuel and my truck had some power, lol. I burned 330 gallons of that stuff with no problems. It's just hard to get unless you know the right people.
@hummerguy

@@toddk1377 Im currently running a pyrometer, I tend to stay around 500-600F when Im trying to get through traffic. Has anyone ever installed an intercooler to keep the temperature down even more with the fuel turned up? Seems like it'll probably be more possible with a different turbo I guess. I never thought of running jet fuel, that'll be pretty interesting, I was thinking about possibly running WVO with diesel 50-50. Cold weather isn't really a concern where Im at either so gelling of the WVO wouldn't be much of an issue
