Two publications...and two different realities? It almost seems that way at times as Car and Driver's list of Top Sub-Compact SUVs is VERY different than Consumer Reports. In this video, we take Car & Drivers Top 5 Sub-Compacts and then see what Consumer Reports thinks of the same vehicles. It's fascinating how different each organizations take is on the same vehicle...tune and buckle up...it's going to get interesting!

THE SIDE NOTE - This video was really interesting to make as Car & Driver and Consumer Reports really don't see eye-to-eye...at all...at least when it comes to Sub-Compact SUVs. As you saw in the video, sometimes they were relatively close in their videos but more often...overall...their lists reflect different versions of reality. Which list is "right" in your eyes? What would be your Top 5?

I drive a 2022 Kona Limited -- the 2023 version was recalled twice; my model year was never recalled. The low ratings for Kona are for the base engine, not the 1.6 turbo that I drive (but the DCT is annoying at times). I'm interested to see how CR rates the redesigned 2024 Kona, with it's bigger trunk and overall dimensions. And yes, the 2023 Kona EV was a "dog" so let's see how the new Kona EV is rated.

They don't see eye-to-eye because consumer reports is biased. They are not a factual review company. They take sponsorship money and that's where the review goes to.

The main difference is reliability. When I look at vehicles I check Consumers Reports instead of Car & Driver. The fact that C&D has a VW in the first 5 spots says a lot.

I feel bad for you. Trusting consumer reports. They are the most biased review company there is. They don't use fax. They use sponsorship money come up with their ratings

Had one of these on rental in the USA, very impressed, everything as described here, 56mpg in 3,900 miles driving Very quiet and smooth. Thinking of buying one now.

In my mind, if it isn't AWD, it isn't an SUV. I like sub-compacts but I live near the Sierras and they won't even let non-AWD's drive through the passes in shaky weather so they are non-starters for me.

One is beholden to advertisers, the other does not. CR actually buy every car they test in their facility. CR also don’t let car makers edit their review.

I was the proud owner of a 2015 Kia Forte coupe right up to the point that after owning it all of one year, it caught on fire on the side of the 101 freeway and burnt to the ground. And if your Kia or Hyundai hasn't yet caught fire, don't park it in your garage or carport because it still may and then it's going to take your house with it😂 10:09

I've commented on other videos by you. This is the latest? 2 months ago. You need to realize that the dealer location etc. is very important. Doesn't every car have problems that only the dealer can solve? In my experience, when we take our vehicle to a local repair shop, they often don't really know the vehicle and MUST refer to the manual. The dealer repairman may be familiar enough that he knows the repair by heart and will take less time to get your car back to you. It don't matter if a Toyota or Subaru is the best car if the dealer is 50 miles away. And who cares what CR says. All they are is recording responses from their subscribers. Not exactly a cross section of all drivers. I could say the same for the magazines. The NTSA is more reliable. So include their findings. I hope this is helpful

Agree as a CR subscriber for many years. Used vehicles are rated by subscriber surveys, but new modes are put through the ringer at the CR test track so it's not the same.

Consumer reports is not a highly respected company. They used to be until they started focusing on who gives the money. They're a bias review company now.

The 2 mags have completely different missions. A great driving car is going to he high on C&D's list. A great driving car that has massive reliability problems won't be on CR's. That said, this was an interesting and useful comparison, and thanks - would like to see more of this sort of thing...

Incorrect. Car and driver focuses on both reliability and great driving. Consumer reports focuses on sponsorship

This report shows that NO agency can agree with another as they all are "experts" I have read a number of them reviewing the same cars and everyone has a different 1-10 list. My recommendation is to make your own decision based on how you relate to each particular vehicle when after sitting in and driving them. Does one of them work for you.

I agree with consumer report on picking the Subaru cross trek as their #1 pick. Thousands of Americans also agree because Subaru sells over 150 thousand of these tough little SUV’s. Now as far as car and driver we can always agree to disagree but it’s strange the Subaru doesn’t even make their list. What are they thinking? The Mazda is very cramped plus it’s not even fair to compare Mazda AWD with Subaru’s symmetrical AWD.

nope, they have tested it, as well as the rest of us, and the rear seat is terribly cramped and dark compared to the rest of the segment. I am 5' 10" and my knees press hard against the front seat when it is in my driving position.

@victorteran9766 well you must have longer legs then me iam 5.10 and I sit in the back seat after setting the front seat for myself and I have enough room in the back that my knees don't touch the back of the front seat

Cx 30 is much better thar CR mentioned. For , CR has no credibility. CR kept recommending Subaru even though the engines had head gasket problems. They did this for years. Not sure what there relationship with Subaru is? Subaru also has CVT and oil consumption problems. CR should stick to appliances 😂
@victorteran9766
@victorteran9766 7 месяцев назад
well for us that have a Crosstrek, it is completely trouble free and those gasket problems have been largely solved. The Mazdas are indeed reliable, but they always compromise interior space and in the case of the CX-30, rear suspension quality.

To be fair, it's a small window of models. Considering Ford, GM and Toyota own the largest number of recalls in the last 20 years, I would think those would be more of a concern
