I’m a huge fan of Marion Dutton with MazArt Studio and Stephen Conway of Easy Oil Painting. Two of the absolute best artists and teachers I’ve ever come across. Another incredible artist/teacher and I’m honored to call him friend is JD Wayne, The Rock and Roll Painter. JD has helped me reach what I feel is the next level in oil painting.

In my opinion, MazArtStudio and Kevin Hill are both highly recommended if you want to transition from the Bill Alexander/Bob Ross style to more traditional style and ditch your two-inch brush for a filbert.

Just saw an episode of Bob Ross, heard him saw something I've never heard before! He mentions what the little "bits" are for, i.e. to strengthen the canvas by banging them into the rear and also that if you coat the back of the canvas with water, it will really make it sit tighter on the frame. Never heard either before and never could figure out how you use the "bits" in the rear corners, Wild. Maybe worth a short video from you show/tell both?? Best wishes. Alan . Uk.

I was tremendously amused by this ... if it is not amusing to anyone else, my humble apologies. But I found myself doing some wet on wet painting today. What I ended up with cannot be properly called art, but it was delicious. I made a couple of sandwiches, today. I started out by coating my breadvases with a nice coating of liquid white mayonnaise, then proceeded to blend in some Indian yellow brown mustard. Added a slice each of some titanium white Swiss cheese, several slices of some very light brown turkey, and a couple of thalo green pirckle slices, before topping the whole thing off with a nice orange slice of sharp cheddar and a second liquid white-coated breadvas. I'm sorry, i know it's kind of silly, but that really what I found myself thinking as I put together the sandwiches ... and probably will every time I make sandwiches for the rest of my life. Sigh. A mind is a terrible thing.

One of my favorite things about Nic Hankins is that he is able to do Bob Ross paintings the way I wish Bob Ross could have done them. I mean of course, hour long sessions. Bob was required to complete most of his tutorials in 25 minutes which made them difficult to follow. Nowadays, we have the ability to pause his videos, but Nic just creates the longer sessions in the first place, so we are able to follow him much more easily. Plus, Nic has the ASMR type voice that Bob had so following his tutorials is much easier because you instantly feel calm, which makes the entire process that much more pleasant. Also, I am a long time follower and supporter of Wild Creates and love everything you have done for my skills.

Wild: "First of all, if you're a left handed artist - I'm sorry."😋 Hey Wild- Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael (three of the four ninja turtles), Pablo Picasso, Van Gogh, Escher, Kincade and Rubens would all like a word.🤨 Seriously though, don't feel sorry for left handed artists. Studies have shown that left-handers have greater access to the creative region of their brains than right-handers do.

I recommend Kevin Hill for landscapes, by far the best out there. Gary Jenkins for florals, the master. Marion Dutton for wildlife, her pet portraits are world class. I personally do not recommend anything in the Ross world. I would rather fail with originality than succeed with imitation.

@@WildCreates LOL I am trying to watch all of them. We have learned so much from you already. You are the reason we knew to check Michael's for canvases and what to buy and scored 70% off. We have had 4 local classes from a great teacher, 35 gets you a completed Bob Ross style painting to take home. Age 60 and a new beloved hobby for us :). I am looking for information on fitting such big paintings onto small canvases. Is there a formula easy enough for beginners to understand? I am just not getting how to fit that on a small canvas. I tried a 12x16 and the sky I had no problem with but Oh the landscape itself. Talk about big trees. LOL Do I try for half the painting? It is hard to use the wet on wet brushes for such a small area. Do I turn the canvas landscape or portrait? The youtube search is almost useless, type small canvas in your videos and it brings up so many and repeats them. Thank you for sharing your insight and talent with all us beginners!

The honest answer is practice ha ha ha. In one of my videos I mention using painters tape to mark off where to start and stop your background, midground and foreground. Try using that hack to help.
