Topai, a polynesian dish that has many different names to it through out the South Pacific. From the friendly islands of Tonga, we call it Topai. My grandma would whip up these sort of dessert every once in awhile, and the taste of the coconut milk always made me wanting more. A simple and easy dish to make. Hope you all enjoy! Malo
Ingredients
Coconut milk
1 can coconut milk ( save 1/3 cup milk for later use)
2 1/2 cup water
1/3 cup sugar
Dumpling
1 cup flour
1/3 cup coconut milk (from earlier)
Pinch of salt
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Omg thank you! My mum would always make this for us as kids in the winter time in NZ. Now that it’s Winter here in Australia, I can attempt to make it for my kids who sometimes ask for topai but I never knew how to make it Lol. I do remember my mum adding coconut to the dough though. Thanks again ☺️

This was an ultimate Tongan struggle feed in Tonga when I was growing up although we added the coconut pulp to the dough after the coconut milk was made. Traditionally you also add la’i moli or a couple of leaves from a lemon tree to the pot while boiling & no vanilla. Traditionally it’s a breakfast food rather than a dessert.

Yes la'i moli was usually added to the topai growing up as well, but since I'm overseas it was hard to find so I used vanilla extract instead.

Thank you so much for making this video. I grew up eating Topai and til now Tongans still eats Topai. Can you do a video on the Fruit Cakes that Tongans make for their occasions. Great video by the way.

That must be African topai because we don't use baking soda or salt in our topai mixture. And we only add baking powder if we're making topai for faikakai.

Too true I grew up making it with just mahoa'a, penu'i niu, huhu'a niu and suka 😋 no more no less

This looks similar to Filipino ginataang bilo bilo. I'm going to try this! Yum!

I love that you said this. I’m Tongan, Filipino, and white and those dishes always remind me of each other but obviously the Ginataang bilo bilo is more complicated to make. I told my bf (he’s full Filipino) I was going to make him Topai today and I showed him this video and he said it looks like Ginataang too🇵🇭

We have the same dish in Uvea & Futuna islands 🇼🇫 but, instead of coconut milk, we just use boiled water. And for the dough, it's just water & flower 😂. While boiling them, we add some lemon grass and just a bit of sugar. And that's it. Simple. I don't know why you use so much ingredients. It's like disrespecting all the oldest generations of Polys 😂

We shouldn't really fight over what dish belongs to who. Did nobody ever stop to think the islands all have similar food? Although I thought this dish in Tonga was called Faikakai but it doesn't matter. We all eat the same foods in the end.
