That car is very very salvageable. I've seen muscle in way worse condition brought back to life. Especially being a convertible. These days that car is a very solid starting point as long as the frame is solid.

I have owned my 69 GTO convertible for 50 years this July........From the factory it was Crystal Turquoise like the car in this video but with a white top and Parchment interior. In 1972 I was going to college at the University of Texas,with orange being the school color. I wanted an orange convertible musclecar and decided my favorite choice would be an orange 69 GTO Judge convertible. After looking for 6 months for one, I realized I wasn't going to find one..(back then I didn't know that they only made 108 Judge covertibles and that only about 20 of them were painted orange (Pontiac called it Carousel Red). Back then there was no internet and they weren't being advertised in Hemmings, so finding one of those 20 cars for sale back then was like finding the Ark of the Covenant. After giving up looking, I bought my Crystal Turquoise ragtop and a wrecked Judge hardtop and moved all the Judge equipment over to my convertible and painted it Carousel Red and voila I had a 69 orange Judge convertible. My car has not been wet since 1975 and has no rust repair or patch panels with straight as an arrow original sheet metal. The main reason that I never got rid of my GTO is that I figured some moron would treat it like the GTO in this video!

Had a '69 coupe, bought in '72 for $2200 sold in '86 for $2900. Who knew what they would go for today.

So interesting. In the 70's when I was in high school I liked working on cars, had a 71 Nova. My younger brother had a buddy who was looking for a car. He'd saved up $400 and was going to buy anything he could get for that price, didn't matter, could be a bug, could be anything. He finds this ad in the newspaper (that's how we used to sell used cars) that said 69 Pontiac $400. So he buys it. It is a 69 GTO, convertible, primered black, 400 HO engine, 4 speed tranny. They asked me to put headers on it, which I did, and discovered the Pontiac heads with the header bolts pointed downward was a PITB. Anyway, test drove it of course to check my work. Damn thing was fast! Shifted 2nd to 3rd at about 60. To that point, and until the current generation of cars, that was the fasted street car I'd ever driven. Nice car!

I just sold my 69’ GTO convertible in “Crystal Turquoise” with white top. Matching Numbers with the original Muncie 4sp. 400 Rochester quad. Really enjoyed the car. The color was a head turner. First time I didn’t lose money on a car. 👍

Great history lesson as always! I owned a 1969 GTO ragtop circa 1975-1978. It had the Ram Air III 400 with 4-speed, manual steering and drum brakes. OMG, those drums were terrible! Over 75 mph, it would not stop, the brakes would just fade away.

I remember the 1969 GTO, my neighbor’s son returned from military service in Vietnam and bought a metallic green coupe with a 4 speed, bucket seats and hood mounted tach. It had a noticeable new car smell and it had a 350 4bbl that really took off.

What a coincidence this gets posted, im on the hunt for a 68 gto vert 4 speed, saw one at a swapmeet and I'm in love, thanks for the video!

Back in the late 80s I bought a 73 Pontiac Grand-Am with a 400 4 barrel 4 speed 4 $400.It was sitting on a street 4 about a week and a friend told me about it.It also had honeycomb rims and tach and gauges.It was 1 if only 187 made that year with a 4 speed transmission.

It is sad to see that GTO become so neglected as to end up in the yard. Somebody didn't realize what they had. But then again, many years ago old muscle cars weren't bringing much money. Driven hard & put away wet was a common phrase and fear. I wonder how many of the GTO convertibles built that year are still registered?

Reminds me of when I bought my 69 Judge (ram air 4speed) for $900 from a girl in Phoenix, no brakes, and drove it back to base with only the emergency brake.

Its pretty rusty but it looks somewhat saveable, pretty rare car as well so could be worth it if someone ever buys it

I hate seeing GTOs in the junkyard especially a convertible. I've had my two GTOs for about 10 years. I didn't plan on keeping them this long but they are part of the family now. Lol

Love to see it saved but I fear it is a 'goner', and with a Lemans front end, maybe some bent frame (even if straightened) and a northeast-weathered beaten vehicle, I don't see the point.

There is always hope for. Cool car like this, just a matter of money.

Sad to see that Goat landed there. I've always had a thing for the GTO since I first got my driver's license back in 1987. A guy around the block from my house back then had a 68 as his daily driver. I'd love to get a 1968 Goat.

Always wonder how relatively rare cars like this go from being someone’s pride-and-joy to rusting away in the quiet corner of a junkyard? My guess is that one of the “cuties” the owner picked up in his dream car convinced him to put a ring on her finger, and a short time later, a bun in her oven! The next thing you know, the poor guy is trading his GTO in for one of those new Vega wagons Chevy has come out with and everything else just sort of heads downhill from there…….😂

If you ever find a Pontiac Grand AM ...the original big ones, I would love to hear your input and knowledge about those. I had a 1975 Pontiac Grand AM with the 400 4 barrel automatic.

always look forward to another one of your videos. my youthful weekend recreation was finding another junkyard to go through and see what treasures were within as you do now. my adventures took place in the 60s, 70s, and 80s; when there were plenty of junkyards still to be entered and explored.

Loved going to the old fashioned junkyards in the 1070's & 80's where they would let you look for your own parts and remove them. Had one I use to go to that was so big that the owner would let you drive your own car or truck to the pick vehicle.

I think Steve should revisit this one and pop the hood open. My curiosity is killing me

If people watched more of your videos along with Pole Barn Garage videos, they'd realize that they themselves along with anyone else with the desire and vision to look past the rust can save cars like this! Not all cars need to be in "showroom condition" or "gas monkey'd out" to be able to enjoy them. And NO modern cars or trucks have sole like the good old vintage American muscle! It's always been a dream of mine to pull out a 1968-1972 Chevy Nova, or a 67 Chevelle SS out of the weeds somewhere and get it on the road again. But I took the wrong turn in my youth and made bad decisions. Even though I am a recovering addict and sober going on 11 years and counting. I'm almost 41 years old and simply can't afford one even if I had that chance now.

That's ashame that is in salvage yard! Do they sell cars @ that location? That would be a good project car for someone! Hopefully it won't get crushed! Thanks for sharing! Take care Steve!

Nice video, a few comments. The car likely didn’t have a power antenna since a power antenna option included a rocker switch to the left of the power top switch and this car had no punch out there. Maybe someone added a CBR radio or something and added an extra antenna out back. Also the oil filler cap wasn’t a factory unit, some kind of auto parts store replacement.

It's a crime to let a gem set and rot.

I had a 1968 GTO with a 400 4-speed manual, quadrajet carb back in the day...urethane bumper and all. Plenty of room under the hood to do whatever maintenance that needed to be done (unlike today's engine compartments). Knowing what I know now, sure with I had held onto it. The only downside for the 68 and 69 were the quarter panels and rockers...that's where moisture tended to accumulate which led to rusting out...really had to keep an eye on them.

I would guess it was last on the road in the early 80s..😄

Back in about 1980 a high school friend of mine had a 69 GTO Hardtop with an electric antenna, I am pretty sure it came from the factory that way, but it had a rocker switch for the antenna, a rocker switch just like the top button on the found car. The switch was near where the top switch is on the vert. Its possible the vert had a rear antenna that was just manual, maybe installed by the dealer? Anyway great find. These A-body cars have always fascinated me.

i remember that gto.. when the top was still up.. lil rotted.. surprised it's still there.. lol hood.. engine fire.. so parts adapted to retrofit.. was still scary is right.. most show offs ended badly lol & cap not orig to her but think he hit a hydrant with it

Hi Steve- great content as usual. I have an odd memory that I'd like to share with you, and maybe get some insight. Probably 25 years ago I was cruising a junkyard and happened on what I remember as a 2nd gen Firebird (might have been a Camaro, it was years ago). It was a console shift manual trans (4spd?) and I did what any car nut would do. I hopped in behind the wheel and got lost in fantasy for a minute. Naturally, I grabbed second gear next- and something quite odd caught my attention. As I pulled the 1-2 shift, a collar on the steering column moved. It was just like bringing the stick down on a column shift auto, but there was NO provision for a column shift! I grabbed 3rd, and the section of column rotated again. Each time I changed gears, that collar rotated. I didn't understand why. I got into a conversation with my son today and related this story to him- and while I did, a theory came to mind. Is it at all possible that the oddball no-an-automatic collar on the column, was actually a factory thing, designed to lockout the gear selection with the key out? That's the only theory that makes any sense to me. Thanks for all the great content!

Big center nose for 69 tempest and Le Mans chrome front bumper. The GTO and 68 tempest / Le Mans had smaller center nose. One quick easy way to tell 68 from 69 .

The chrome bumper on a 68 was only option for the customer if they chose a color which was not standard because the Enduro bumpers were made for each color

Lucky you know what... Man, I swear I'm so jealous of you guys. I have to do a different job and don't have time to even go looking for these things. I have a 454 Chevy BB on a motor stand just waiting for me to find it a partner. Imma have to just TAKE the time and go find my car. The ones easy to find, the owners are WAAAYYY too proud of them and asking ridiculous prices for cars that are nearly too far gone. Anyway. Excellent find
