When I left school in 1979 the RAF were just receiving them in to Service, to me they were the best Aircraft the RAF have ever had especially the Tornado GR1/GR4, sadly now most have been scrapped (with the exception of museum & BDRT frames) I also saw the last 3 GR4's on the last day off there flying days, Awsum take off power & still today a superb aircraft which really still should be flying over the UK skies.
I once saw a six ship 5 sqn F3 take off early one morning at Coningsby about 1991. Took off in pairs, the noise! Then came the peace dividend that hit defence spending as the USSR had collapsed. Goodbye Harrier, Jaguar, Phantom, Nimrod, even ASR helicopter service. Nothing in reserve as airframes are stripped for spares so our serviceable fleet gets smaller and smaller. Trained pilots are "moved on" because they aren't of the right ethnic or gender mix. Watch out Red Arrows and BBMF. Never mind, the present Government don't seem to want to protect our way of life or borders anyway so let's welcome the new Britain.
ALl those "unrestricteb climb" "performance launch" "vertical take-off" "fast take-off" (=for saying short take-off) etc. are just plain sick verbiage.
I so loved that aircraft having been the project manager for the Flight Simulators at Rediffusion Flight Simulation and having met and worked with a number of its crews, so sad to see the government and the civil service Blobs get rid of them
