It's looking good. I would think that you would only need a 12 inch header with the span that you have. For your garage door you may want a double 12 inch, so one on top of 1 another. And now to give you a good solid surface to bolt. The overhead tension Springs 2 for the door. If you want to look and see how to frame out a garage door there's several bill videos on RU-vid on RR buildings. You may want to watch and they explain a good way of framing out garage doors and you're man door. Was your building being still framed? I don't think you have to worry on the span that you have

great build...hopefully you are gonna have spray foam insulation applied to the walls, adds structural strength and provides a great heat/cold and sound barrier

As a subscriber from since you and your young family lived in Hawaii, my hat is off to you young man, this is a huge undertaking and you are doing a great job. The experience you are getting will be very fulfilling and you will be able to carry it with you the for rest of your life. As a contractor myself for the past almost 20 years, there is few things better than looking back at the end of a long day and admiring what you have built with your own two hands. Don't worry about the people that are whining about how long it's taking, they have likely never built anything in their life, especially nothing on the scale of what you are building. Keep doing what you are doing and before you know it you will be able to use your shop as I'm sure you have dreamed of many times.

Hey man just a little hack for you, all I use to haul 16' lumber is a $100 kayak rack I bought on Amazon. Connects via your hitch and basically extends your bed. Works flawlessly. Great content! Can't wait to see the finished shop!

@@thomasturnquist118 if you have a northern tool, look for a truck bed extender. Just watch how much weight you put on them. Doesnt take long that far out there to get really really heavy

Here's some good advice from somebody that's had several shops do not put a canister roll-up door in! You will regret it they're noisy beyond belief with the wind and they suck (R)value-wise They let the cold through and the heat They suck they suck they suck I wish I wouldn't have done the roll-up door on one side of my shop worst decision I ever made trust me! You got plenty of heights for an overhead garage/shop door!

Nice work, but you will seriously regret scrimping on windows. I added 6 skylight panels to my shop and the difference is night and day.

As the sill seal product you’re using isn’t waterproof I personally would have used a nice thick line of caulk sealant right on the concrete before installing the pink sill seal. Extra protection at a pretty cheap price. Fingers crossed your concrete is absolutely level with no little dips in it.

Make a small grind mark on the concrete where every stud is. This way when you go to hang things, you can easily find the studs.

A sharpie works better and doesn't gouge your concrete and give a place for dirt to hide. Also, if the sharpie marks drive you insane then a magic eraser will remove it if it's on polished concrete and sandpaper will remove it if it's on a broom finished concrete slab.

Take a 2×4 the length in between your up rights and lay on side and it strengthen your piece on top

Nice work. Tip, temporary nail/screw a long board horizontally at a decent height to help support the studs as you place them. Works a bit like a 3rd hand. Good job.

I never have understood why builders install blocking laterally using toenailing. I understand it may be more aesthetically pleasing, but they are usually hidden by sheathing and drywall. Stagger every other block by 1-1/2" and you will be able to end nail each one. It's a stronger connection and it's faster.

You should consider buying a used scissor lift like a genie 1930. Use it and resell it when you are done. I bought one building my 65x70 shop but I kept it. I have a 20-foot ceiling...the lift makes everything inside much easier..

---- you can do it if you are desperate enuff', or crazy enuff': I once carried 6 2 X 6 X 22' from the lumberyard to the jobsite in my 93 Miata - the lower 2 were ground down to a severe angle, but they got there ----- the solution is this little known invention called a "truck rack" and works better if you have a WT with a real ( read "long" ) bed

It looks like I saw a brick ledge hopefully it’s there. Also since those walls have no load on them the windows could have been just box frames. No need for a header.

We have a 5.5" brick ledge all the way around. I wasn't 100% if I needed a header or not, so I'm erroring on the "overbuilt" side on this project. 🤙🏽

Have you looked into a powder actuated gun to shoot 2” pin into the steel instead of drilling all those holes it will save you a lot of time it works for concrete as well

Blocking is a great idea. Keeps the studs straight like you said anx also for when you want to hang anything heavy on the walls when sheetrocked like cabinets. Just a little note when you do your outside sheathing you have to block where the seams come together so you can nail it to pass frame inspection. Also fireblocks at 10' and sealed once sheathing is on.

I enjoy getting into these videos until seeing these sponsors. Ugh....AG1 honestly is not a great supp. Theres multiple videos on how questionable it really is, besides the $100 to order. Remember if youre already in DECENT shape, this will do nothing for you. Sorry, but after being in the industry for 20 yrs, im tired of seeing this crap. I do not understand RU-vid at all!!!! And not just your channel but several others. I am a long time subscriber. Comment now and again. When you made the comment of getting close to 200k subscribers, I click and look how many subscribers you have. Then it tells me I am not a subscriber. On your channel I can distinctly think of this happening twice. Don’t understand why. You new videos show up in my suggestions but from time to time I check and I am suddenly no longer a subscriber.

I'm so impressed with your construction skills, not bad for a computer guru, everything is looking fantastic and really good idea to add more windows, you'll be so happy with all the natural light coming into the shop! I'm so excited about my shop progress because we're going to pour the floor on Tuesday, they tell me it will take about 15 trucks! So sorry to hear about the corvette damage, loved the portable truck rack/work table idea. 200k is within your sights! Take care and don't work too hard bud!

This series is showing how much of a headache and super restrictive HOAs are. I know if HOA wasn't involved in this project it probably could've been completed by now for a lot cheaper than currently invested into the project.

Bought a 1940 farm house (as our first) and never touched a remodel, we did it all ourselves minus the drywall. I will say, insulation is very important, have you thought about what you’re going to go with?

14:39 - That is Avery smart idea to add blocking. I, personally, would have set up the blocking vertically, meaning the widest flat part of the block running stud to stud staying flush against the edges of the stud’s so that later when you want to hang cabinets or something you have the blocking you can screw into rather than just the 1.5 inches of the edge of those studs.

I'm surprised that fire code doesn't require you to have a back or side door towards the rear of the building. Please consider that in your safety plan, especially if you will have flammable items in the shop, such as oil, gasoline, etc.

Just a thought but you could hold a weekend subscriber help session where you select a number of people to come help frame. I’ve seen other people I follow do this on projects they want to speed up… assuming you want to speed this part up. Love the progress though!

15:57 camera is clearly in the middle of your garage and about 8 ft off the ground. How is it raining on your camera? Outside of a hurricane rain doesn’t travel 20 ft sideways!

Since you went with the red iron, you don’t need to frame the windows out like a normal stick build cause there’s no downward force needing the extra lumber. Enjoying the build, need to buy another house with a bigger yard so I can build me one too.

Awesome job! for the sides. What I would do is just pre-build them on the floor and then just stand them up into place. That would be the quickest way to do that.

The shop is coming along nicely. I just can’t stop thinking you are going to regret not putting a drain in for a sink. Or even a bathroom. It can still be done but I’d do it before you close the walls in. I’ve core drilled a lot of slabs to put electrical services in. The newer the concrete the easier it is.

One thing I really appreciate in my home are skylights. Even have them in my closets! Some days I don’t even turn my lights on without realizing it. If you find a good deal on some skylights…. I recommend throwing some in your shop.

There are two types of skylights in the world: those that leak, and those that don’t leak, yet. Skylights are problems and will eventually leak. I recommend staying clear, even though the look and light is nice.

9:05 - I would have the windows at the front of the shop running all way across from wall to the garage door on each side. More natural might is always better.
