Did you know that tornadoes and hurricanes share a lot in common? Not only are they dynamically destructive weather events, but they both are formed by a mass of air that rotates in a circular motion. When a bunch of air or water rotates like this, it’s called a vortex. In a vortex, the fluid on the outside has to move faster than the fluid on the inside in order to keep up. That’s what produces the super fast winds in tornadoes and hurricanes. I was wondering if we could make a simple example of each to see how they move on a small scale. Well, you can use a a couple of bottles and a plastic connector to make a tornado tube that rotates pretty well. And it’s even easier to make a cool model of a hurricane just stirring up some water and then adding some food coloring. Good luck with your storm making.
