Your saying on the side that goes to flex plate put grease and just transmission fluid on trans side right? Didn't put grease and did try to push and turn it to sort of lock it in place. Could the not putting grease cause the wheels not to spin.

The hub... Yeah, experienced that first hand: it had been assembled [25 years earlier?] dry. Tried to pull the engine and it started dragging out the torque converter with it, which just didnt work because of engine bay clearances. A large crowbar saved the day: my little 2 footer was going nowhere. Reassembled using some SP400 [which hardens to a wax like consistency in about a day/less likely to sling off] after cleaning it all up with a wire wheel. Good basic stuff - a straight up video. Little things always add up over time.

Good morning. I love your video! I have rebuilt my TH350 and have some experience with installing transmissions. I have a question about bolting the torque converter to the flexplate.... Since the torque converter sags ever so slightly from its own weight when resting in the transmission, prior to bolting to the flexplate,, should you lift it up ever so slightly (take the weight off) as you tighten the first torque converter to flexplate bolt? Or just pull it forward and bolt up without lifting on it?

I used a transmission jack--(they rent them at O'Riellys) and was able to adjust the transmission at the right height and tilt angle that it rolled right in place with no binding, installed the bolts and snugged them up tight, then removed the jack and torqued the nuts in a cris-cross pattern--much as you would when mounting a tire on your car.

I have a 2003 f150 automatic 2wd 4r70W and when parked or in low gear I feel what feels like the t/c wobbling a bit, shuddering? but there is no shifting issues or slipping issues. Around 45mpg it shakes a bid. I feel it shaking more in part or in 1st gear. What could this be? I'm thinking just a bad torque converter.

In your video (and others) it's noted you have to rotate the converter until you feel 3 clicks or clunks as you push the converter in. I ruined the first one I installed in a'75 Dodge W100, 360 V8, following that sequence. After I bolted it all up it didn't work so well. I called the transmission shop and they told me on that particular transmission, you had to get 5 clunks to engage everything! I ended up paying for another one, so just wanted DIY guys to be aware that it may take more 'clunks' to be fully seated. If you have to pull the case together with bolts--It's NOT seated. My bad!

You don't count clunks you spin it back ad forth as many times as it takes to get it all the way in if you can see behind it it's not all the way in and if it touched the flywheel before the trans bolts are tite it's not all the way in you should have to actually pull it towards the flywheel a tiny bit after trans is bolted tite to block.
@shermorton7170
@shermorton7170 2 года назад
Another good way to get it seated--the main point is that it's not seated if the case doesn't slide completely together without forceful effort--it should just "clunk" into place. Thanks for the added advice. Sherm

@@georgealmeida7382 Exactly,on most trannys your supposed to run a straight edge over the front of the bellhousing and if the converter hub is hitting the straight edge is not fully seated but yeah clunks are just a reference,you have to make sure its fully seated,kinda like saying "well i pressed the trigger and the gun didn't fire so it must not be loaded,you have to physically check before pulling the trigger ha ha ha ha

It appears that the torque converter in your video is leaking. Is that normal? The reason I'm asking is because I had to remove the torque converter with the engine (engine was locked up) and I noticed that the TC leaks fluid when held transmission side down. I'm curious as to whether that's normal or if the TC is damaged. Thanks!

I put a new pump seal on a AW71 (using a AW70 converter) then installed it in my Volvo. I used a few drops of Lucas ATF additive oh the hub of the converter/seal surface. The trans worked great for 25 miles then began to leak from the converter to pump area. I can't see that the Lucas (which is the viscosity of STP) could cause this. Spray brake cleaner on a shop towel and see if you can wipe it away, if not then I recommend using scotch Brite or a really fine steel wool, with a little brake cleaner. Don't spray directly on the part, and make sure to wipe it dry (I also wipe a little trans fluid on it after, then wipe that off to be sure it takes any residue with it)
