The Original Set Pattern dance, with its requirement to complete three identical circuits in a specific dance style, was a real test of creativity, stamina and technique. I really don't like the modern Rhythm Dance, which seems to be just a mini free-dance, incorporating a mash-up of styles. Just my opinion! This performance with all its twists, turns and stresses on limbs is particularly astonishing when you remember that Jayne had sustained a nasty shoulder injury when falling during preparation for the European Championships in January 1983, meaning that they had to sit out the European's and it was touch and go whether she would be fit and ready for the Worlds a few weeks later.
So true. And kinda sad: 30 years, and not one pair can surpass them. I wasn't even born when Torvill and Dean went into professional events. I want to see their equals on ice. I want to see the world of ice dancing moving forwards, not trying to conquer a peak that had been taken 30 years ago. I love Torvill and Dean. I wish there was a pair like them nowadays.
@@phillycatlady There's all sorts of stuff they couldn't do these days. A lot of their air work would be penalized (in Barnum when he flips her over his back at the end, or when her head is near the ice and he's, I don't know what the move is called, but he's whipping her around by her lower body. Don't think that's allowed in competition anymore). Even how they started Bolero and ended Paso Doble (their bodies on the ice) will get a deduction. So... while Torville and Dean will always be the best on multiple levels, ice dancing is a totally different sport these days too. Just look at their Bolero Olympics win vs their 94 Lillehammer skate/score... 🤦♀️
Rock and Roll has never looked so spectacular and attractive ; this couple definitely are a pleasure to watch. They have a hypnotic effect ! Supple , tidy moves and very elegant !
It wasn't meant to be a criticism. I meant that the moves they're repeating three times are so original, engaging, and evocative, that the crowd doesn't care they're being repeated.
Great is great no matter the year! Side note: I actually miss the old Ice Dance competition format. I enjoyed the Compulsory Dances. It was the best and clearest format to identify the skill level of each team, they all had to skate to the same steps, use the same holds and perform to the same ISU pieces of music. The Original Set Pattern was a more creative format to identify the skill level of each team. They all skated to an ISU chosen rhythm but it was their choice of steps and holds. And the Free Dance was of course the best combination of skill and creative presentation. The old format clearly exposed individual team's degree of proficiency with the more skilled (generally speaking, politics notwithstanding) rising to the top. IMO
Ahhhh, the good old OSP! three times around and the third as good as the first! That really showed what you were made of! God their legs must have been burning! So, so good.
Also, Jayne had sustained a nasty shoulder injury a couple of months earlier while they were working on new moves to add to their Barnum free dance (and they missed the European championship as a result). All the twisty movements in the Rock & Roll OSP must have been very uncomfortable for Jayne, yet her expression never gave anything away.
That was amazing just watching them they make dancing on ice look so easy and elgant no couple will replace them but it would be amazing to see Britain lift the gold and for Torville and adean to see so much passion in skating and work and determation i think they be proud.xx💙💙💙💙💙💙👍💖💖💖💖💖💖💚💚💚💚💚🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀
Considering this was an OSP with all the rules about not having lifts etc, this was amazing... Better even than the rock 'n roll free dance that Grischuk and Platov won the Olympics with. Love it.
I dont think that is a shame, I think it just a sign how great and special they were. It is not like there arent some great and captivating teams since in their own right like Klimova & Ponomarenko, Virtue & Moir, Anissina & Peizerat, pre marital spat Usova & Zhulin, but they are just that great they still stand out. I find it kind of nice somethings have someone who is the best from long ago, not always someone today or recent for once.
They studied so many types of dance so everything they did was appropriate for the music & so technically they could just through the kitchen sink at it! As for their artistry it was down to their natural chemistry. Fate played the most important part in that. Neither with other partners could have achieved anything like they did!
Amazing! I've always loved this Rock'n'Roll and their Paso Doble (OSP 83 & 84) as much as Barnum (FD 83) and Bolero (FD 84) as no one has really ever done Original Dances as difficult as these, before or since. And to have to repeat the same pattern and moves exactly three times is incredible - which of course they don't have to do now. Thank you for uploading.
Original Set Pattern until 1987-88 season pattern created by the dancers must be skated 3 times. Between 1988-1990, the pattern only needed to be skated twice.

My goodness! As an American, this captures “our” dance better than Grishuk and Platov did in 1994. (Who, IMHO, were short track speed skaters in costumes. Seriously, not capable of passing USFSA Senior Dance requirements….)
I just wish there was a name to call this one by. I call their other most signature programs by name- 84 Bolero and Paso Doble, 82 Summertime and Mack and Mabel, and 83 FD Barnum, and 94 the Rhumba and Face the Music and Dance. This one though I am not sure, you cant just say Rock and Roll as it too commonplace, maybe the T&D Rock and Roll. I think this might be my most favorite of theirs of all.

not really. Back then there were 2 compulsory dances the original set patten and the free dance. The two compulsory dances had a certain set of moves that could be performed and had very strict rules about the moves performed. The OSP had more freedom but had to be a set style and within a certain tempo range. Also the dance steps had to be repeated 3 times. This was replaced by the origional dance which removed the rule to repeat the same steps (it is now the short programme) The free dance had fewer rules but did have limits on lifts and jumps etc (but far fewer limits and set compulsory moves than they imposed post 1984)
While I didnt agree with G&Ps 94 gold medal and found their program very sloppy and not even one of their better ones (or not even their best performance to that program, which was Europeans that same year by far) I dont think it is correct to say it was a ripoff of this. Yes both were rock and roll but the styles and programs were totally different. A closer to a ripoff would be G&P`s 98 Olympic program vs a combination of Bolero and the 88 FD of B&B.
Oksana and Evgeny were immature. The reason why Jayne and Chris were cheated out of gold was because the "rules" dictated athletic moves such as the final flip in the free dance was considered "pairs skating" and deductions were made. The rock and roll FD by Oksana and Evgeny was cute, but unrefined, and Evgeny fell during the '94 Worlds one month later, but still won when Rhakamo and Kokko performed better. '95 Worlds had R&K perform a weaker dance, but Evgeny Platov was suffering from a knee injury which kept him from Europeans (that the Finns won) and he and Oksana won because of "technical merit", though if you watch it now there were many mistakes. But Russia had to keep the crown, especially during its country's political and economic turmoil.
If you mean the 3 repeated sequences - that was the rules of the competition at the time. The style of the origional set patten dance was set by the ISU each year and there were strict rules about lifts, jumps etc, including the required 3 repeats.
