Landover, Maryland, USA - 1990 World Professional Figure Skating Championships, Ice Dancing, Technical Dance - Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean of Great Britain perform to Penguin Cafe Orchestra's "Oscar Tango"
The beginning of that routine demonstrated very clearly the perfect synchronisation that marked all their routines. It was amazing, and if you weren't watching you would think there was just one skater. What followed was sheer brilliance with incredibly complicated moves made to look simple and completely effortless because of their expertise. There has never been a better of skaters in ice dancing, and I don't believe there ever will be (although I hesitate to describe what we see in modern competition as ice dancing or even figure skating, as both seem to be more like gymnastics floor routines on ice). They dance out what is inside them, and it is a huge privilege to watch them. I miss them on ice but am so glad we have these wonderful memories on here.
My thought too, I don't like the gymnastics on ice. Ice does not seem the proper medium for that, not because its hard but because it is so smooth that it seems to want a smooth flow of movement. Go play leap frog on the lily pads, leave the ice alone. And I hate the daredevil overhead lifts. I keep thinking of hood ornaments or pirate ship figureheads and the crack of broken bones. The routines seem like a string of stunts with inactivity between each. And for my last gripe...Jayne and Chris were well matched physically, same length of leg. That helped them enormously with precise unison. They looked like a couple so when they told a romantic story, it was believable. Actually, they made it nigh impossible to believe anything but passionate love. The pairs that do all those lifts are mismatched, a teeny tiny lady with a taller bulkier male. When they perform a romantic routine it is creepy. To me it looks like some pervert making moves on his kid sister.

I have always loved ice dance more so than pairs. With the current judging system artistry is sacrificed for jumps in pairs. But with all the rules in ice dance that came about due to judges who were uncomfortable with the innovative style of Torvill and Dean, sadly we won’t see anything like them again. Bolero and their Paso Doble routines were sheer perfection ! GOAT!!!
I thought their Yoyoma Sarabande was my favorite, but oh my, this one. Literally breathtaking. I'm too ignorant of skating to fully appreciate the technical skill. But the sheer beauty of their moves and their expression makes my heart ache. I think that is because we are mortal and so not intended for perfection. That is the gift they share with us, the unbearably exquisite.
Brilliant, creative, so attuned to each other. Perfectly timed without musical reference in the beginning, their bodies blending into one being throughout. Artistry at its best..
Such trust between these two. Christopher the artistic inventor and Jane the tecnical performer. The perfect combination still not matched today in their 60s! X
This musical portion of this program is so heart-wrenching. The music is melodic and sad until the very end, where it seems to end on a positive note. It looks as if Jayne purposely never looks Chris in the eye except for once in the program. She always looks up or away...almost like two people skating together, but alone. Maybe a statement on relationships? Just beautiful.
They make it look like they’re just two pals fooling around on the ice. That’s how easy they make this look but it’s incredible. The silence at the beginning and just watching them sake, that was mesmerising. I could watch T&D for days on end.
The choreography and execution are breathtaking. I think this is the most stunning of theirs that I have seen... words almost fail me.... so moving. G Ire
As many times I have watched Torvill and Dean they continue to leave me absolutely breathless. Wow factor on mega steroids. They simply can not be championed.

Да, эти двое надолго опередили свое время. Прошли уже десятилетия после их ухода из большого спорта, но до сих пор не родилась пара, способная хотя бы приблизиться к ним в искусстве самовыражения и интерпретации музыки. Они уникальны - и этим всё сказано!

The greatest!! Such innovators...just the sound of the blades and the sharpness of the tango movements is so hypnotising.... there are few words to describe their type of technical and artistic genius.
Never seen this before, but it doesn't it make you proud to be British! Absolutely amazing. They took skating to whole different level. Leaves you speechless.....almost. Fabulous, fantastic, out of this world !!!
I don't know what to say. They may not be as classical as some but they have so much power, I can't describe it! Sometimes you see old videos of performances and they look dated, but not this. Chris said they wouldn't get the high scores now because of the judging system but I wouldn't care, these guys...whew, still mesmerizing today......
Genius choreography by Dean; skating sublime. They were so visionary, so far ahead of their time. 26 years later, and it still feels 'contemporary'. I believe this was called "Oscar Tango".
Incredible in every way as usual. What is so striking as well is their mutual trust and respect in the way they work together on the ice. Jayne is not thrown or put at risk - everything is about their art, and working together as a cohesive team. This is what is missing with other performers. For them it's a deep musical and professional respect with an absence of ego. They work from strength to strength, enhancing and elevating each other in every respect.
I wish we could know their thoughts about the gymnastic moves other skaters seem so keen about. I don't like to see those straight arm overhead lifts or those twirling head bangers. At best they look ridiculous and at worst not worth the risk of injury. Also, the pairs who specialize in daredevil stunts are a mismatch physically. The girl is so tiny in contrast to her partner that she looks like his kid sister. That was cute for Shirley Temple and Bojangles, but a disturbing image when mismatched pairs skate to a love theme. Jayne and Chris look very convincing as a couple. Jayne is distinctly shorter. But they have about the same length of leg which I think is key to their unison. I admire that their lifts are so very intelligent. Even when Jayne's body is extended, they distribute her weight onto his legs and shoulders, not solely supported by his arms. And when she is extended, he counterbalances with his weight so their center of gravity remains above the blades. Their transitions between those lifts are so swift and smooth that I can rarely follow how they are achieved. They don't do daredevil lifts and I wonder if that is entirely from preference or a prudent necessity of body type.
@@valkyriesardo278 These overhead lifts and diproportional constitutions of partners are from other sort of sport - figure skating. T& D are ice dancers, not figurists. Figure skating realy is uggly in comparison with ice dancing. But yes, nobody compares to T & D, they are the best.
Wow this is such an amazing couple to watch my mind is blown every routine I watch....... this for me is the first time of watching this and am so glad I have the excitement bubbles inside me when I watch them perform they are so perfect and am enthralled to watch them now in 2019 still perfection in their routine in Dancing on Ice thank you so much Jayne and Chris
First time seeing this dance...when he let's go of her hand and Dean skates away while she remains behind, it reminded me of moments of sorrow in our lives..leaving someone behind or death it really hit me hard...once the music started the whole piece seemed enveloped by sadness and melancholy until the bittersweet end, which looked like a painting. Last observation I have replayed it several times and I cannot see how Dean did that jump while Torville held him amazing!!
