Here's a video of the 2017 total eclipse of the sun taken while camping on BLM land near Shoshoni Wyoming. It was over 45 years ago when I last had the chance to view a partial solar eclipse, and this total one was well worth the wait!

Your display of an eclipse in video is the best I've ever seen. I like your choice music through out your videos. The evening music before the eclipse was nice, then even better when the crickets joined in. You are proving to be quite a videographer/program producer!

We were lucky enough to experience 1 1/2 minutes of totality in our front yard in Independence, Missouri - I wasn't prepared for how amazing it was! I would definitely travel to see another one. And thanks for the info on Abraham Lake - we love the Canadian Rockies!

We drove 1000 miles or so to see this eclipse in Oregon and so glad I did.....we had plans to spend the night in a rest stop on Hwy101 that was in the center of the total eclipse area but so did everyone else it seemed...lol.....we pulled into the rest stop and it was an absolute circus....cars shoved into places there wasn't places for and people everywhere. So we went to plan B and drove into the nearest small town and stealth camped in the bed of our truck on a side street. The next morning I was so proud to have put us in a position to see it! I didn't fall into the trap of trying to record it on video and all though. I figured there would be videos I could watch made by far more capable photographers than me. I did set up a GoPro and did a nice time lapse with it that didn't take any of my time during the eclipse that turned out pretty cool. When totality came I took a few quick snap shots with my DSLR and just trusted auto mode.... then I put the camera down and stared up in awe. Going to do my best to try and see the next one!

Spectacular video! I drove 900 miles to Rexburg Idaho to see it. I fell sorry for the people that live close to the totallity but wouldn't drive to see it. It was amazing to see Mercury with the naked eye, and all the effects on animals and nature! It was the reason I bought my trailer . Motel 6 was charging $800 a night, no way! I left a week before the 21st and scouted out a large area. Anyway it would be cool to caravan to the next one in 2024.

I watched the eclipse reported live on tv from vantages across the continental U.S. but your video surpassed anything, Live or otherwise, that I've seen anywhere. Loved your adventure from setting up your net tent to your drive back. Thanks for taking time to make such a beautiful video and having us along . . . happy adventures!

The entire town stopped for those few moments during totality. There were hundreds of people all cheering, rooting, and it was just surreal! Also, though I couldn't tell from the video, did you get to watch the small "mini eclipses" from the shadows going all "swirly"?

I took a vacation day since the path of totality was about 90 miles north of where I worked and 60 miles from my home. You said it best in the end about just enjoy the moment. I did shoot a time-lapse of the congregation of people watching and the surrounding countryside. My thoughts were thousands and thousand of photographers would get much better images than I could and the moment would be short. I did try to catch a couple images in totality but they sucked and the clock was ticking. We also had some patchy clouds pass by but clear sky during the event. The one phenomena I wasn't aware but my friend knew about was it looked like the sun has just set 360*. Like you said the light is just weird like a slightly overcast day. Birds in a nearby patch of woods became animated right before totality. The next one goes over my property I will be moving to in the near future. It is longer so I will head a little south to get maximum totality time.

However, I lived in the path of totality for the '79 eclipse and, "Lord willing and the creek don't rise" (as my dear old dad used to say), I'll be around for the one in 2024.

Hey Slim, I know this is an old video...an for some unfathomable reason one of you lesser viewed ones, but I just wanted to say thanks! Battling insomnia, I am browsing your earlier work and oh boy, did this bring back memories! While I was along a back road in South Carolina during the eclipse, the effect was identically chilling. Unfortunately, the bane of those who document for prosperity is that they can't sit back and totally absorb the awesomeness of these events. Just wanted to say thanks for your efforts to record this occasion . Oh...one difference! I got to enjoy the sound of roosters crowing in confusion from all directions. PEACE, brother.

We had a total eclipse in TN in 2017 also. I took the day off and we had a party! It was fantastic. I couldn't believe how dark it got. You are right. It's over in a flash but it was so crazy, eerie, cool, etc, etc, etc!!!

This video truly captured not only the eclipse, but the total excitement , beauty, amazement, and awe of the solar eclipse experience. I went to the Grand Tetons NP and went out there about 1 1/2 weeks early to get a tent spot and reserve one for my son, DIL, and friends. I didn't do any filming. The beauty of the NP was they had experts and telescopes and they handed out free glasses for viewing. I wouldn't think of missing the next one and will carefully plan so I am prepared.

I set the iPhone up to take a time lapse of the terrain during the eclipse. As you can imagine it auto exposed the whole thing and looked like a thin cloud cast a slight shadow. Next time I'll set my good camera on manual mode so when it gets dark it'll look dark in the camera. Live and learn.

@SlimPotatohead
@SlimPotatohead 7 лет назад
Hi Carol, I was absolutely perfect at night for tenting, not cold at all. I had a very basic summer sleeping bag and did not need a tent fly. The crickets sang me a lullaby to sleep and it was far more comfortable than a hot stuffy trailer. I highly recommend the Wind River Basin region of Wyoming for summer tenters.

At best, an event like this gives one a sense of the transcendant. At worst, the little hairs on your arms should stand up. If you are completely unaffected, you may not be a card-carrying human. And I loved your "Holy S**t!" , because that's how I felt seeing it.

Nice video Slim. I was down in Kentucky at Land Between the Lakes (LBL) with the eclipse in totality. I mounted my GoPro on my 20ft flagpole looking down on my campsite for the event. I had a chance to see that eclipse, but I didn't want to drive from Maryland to Kentucky. I still kick myself in the behind for that cause it was glorious weather, not a cloud in the sky from what I hear. However, I have seen a full eclipse before. In Germany back in 1998 or so. Of course, it was partly cloudy that day and also of course, clouds partially obstructed the eclipse, but it was still damn impressive. But for me that was not the only impressive part of it. As the moon just about covered the sun, I just happened to look to my right and I saw the darkness, the shadow of the eclipse hurtling towards me. It was spellbinding. I couldn't believe how fast the wall of darkness moved. That and the way the temperature dropped VERY noticeably as the shadow reached us. If you ever have a chance to see one live, take it!

This brought back my experience in rural Wyoming during the eclipse as well. I drove up from Arizona to a highway north of Torrington in Eastern Wyoming. It was an amazing experience, and your video documented it very well. The only downside was the monumental traffic jam getting back to Cheyenne & on to Denver where I was staying -- 8 hours plus. I'll plan better for 2024. Thanks again.

My wife and I watched it from Madras, Oregon. When it was over the guy next to us started playing the Beatles song, "Here Comes the Sun." I also saw the eclipse in Minnesota in 1956 and Baja California in 1991, Write a script of the things you are going to do during the eclipse, remember you only get one take, and include time to step out from behind the camera and just look at the sun and moon, and also look around at the horizon and the other people around you.

We did the eclipse on the way back from Alaska, I had solar filters on the zoom lense and real solar binoculars, quite a unique experience. We had scouted our spot 4 months prior. I used a wired remote on the camera, so i was able to watch the eclipse as well as take photos. Good move on tent camping, as we did. We were in the Mahleur NF just near to John Day.

Hi Rick, I talk about the Aliner at 3:27 in this video. Although perfect for most occasions, this particular trip made a tent the better option than lugging a trailer around. I saw the one in 1979, I was 15 years old at the time. The '79 eclipse was almost total darkness for about 2 minutes here in Oregon. My kids and I shared the partial one together on our deck in Oregon in Aug, 2017. I remember the weirdness too and the weird shadow effect on my workshop. Great video, keep up the good work. Awesome. Thanks, Russ.

We went to Nashville to stay with friends and watch the eclipse. It was very cloudy but the clouds gave an opening so we were able to view the total eclipse entirely. I decided not to take pictures but to just sit back and enjoy it. It was incredible. The strangest thing was that during the total eclipse all the bugs and birds became silent; kind of spooky. Yup, April, 8, 2024, we'll be in Kerrville, TX, for the next viewing. I did enjoy your pics; next time I'll try taking some.
