Total hip replacement - Day 1 

I had my total hip replacement last Tuesday at Cappagh hospital in Ireland was walking 4 hours after surgery. Walked the stairs 5 hours after. Discharged at 7pm same day. Thank God I'm at home off heavy meds after 5th day. The man in this video seems to be struggling. Hope he is doing fine now. Anyone getting the operation I got an Epidural I felt nothing woke up 5 mins before end of Op and heard hammering but felt nothing. Do not be at all afraid of this op it will go really well for you🤗🥰

I'm 1 month into my hip replacement 😀 I'm so glad I had it done, had put it off for 2 years. I promise you'll be glad you did it! May GOD heal you!

I'm 40 and had 49 surgeries and having my 50th April 2nd. Several knee replacements both knees, several hip replacements both hips, several fusions on both ankles and back/SI joints, several rotator cuffs/ac joints/labrum both shoulders. I have a connective tissue disorder called Stickler Syndrome which cause my joints to deteriorate and man it's terrible but I'm still alive. For those that's having upcoming surgery please keep in mind everybody heal different everybody age/situation is different so go at your own pace and don't let nobody shame you by saying well I recovered this fast or you should be doing this or that by now. Some of mine healed super fast and some super slow but patience is a virtue. Do what your body will allow you! Just keep God first and do your best. Remember it's always someone in worse shape than me/you! God Bless all!

I’m over 2 years post right hip replacement. Love my new hip. Been through six major surgeries since December 2014. One was emergency, the rest was on my back and hip. My hip surgery was far the easiest to recover from. Doesn’t even feel one bit artificial. 🥰

I had my right hip replaced and got up and walked the same day went home the following day. Three months later I am going in for my left hip replacement. I am riding my bicycle and hiking and loving my pain free life. I don't understand why this guy is having such a hard time.

I'm 50. Just had full right anterior approach hip replacement. 10 days out walking with no complications. Just some stiffness from incision area. Hoping to be back to normal asap. Pain has been very tolerable. Good luck to all having it done.

I had my total left hip replaced on 4/10/2018. The Anterior approach was used. I was operated on at 7:30am and was home by 8:00pm. The pain from the hip was minimal 1-2. Up and walking a mile in less than 7 days. If you need the surgery get it done.

I had a total hip replacement last week and I'm up and walking with a stick no worries. This video was 12 hours after surgery??? I was up walking with a frame around 4 hours after surgery. The whole procedure lasted 2 hours and I was shocked how quick you're up and about.

I had my left hip replaced 4 weeks ago, And i hope this helps. Yes i was scared as hell but i went in knowing the pain i was dealing with would be gone.So the day of surgery had come and I had it in my mind I was going to get up and walk and pass the PT test that day. I woke up all was good, I was taken to my room and I got right up and wanted to use the bathroom. Thirty minutes later I pass my PT test and went home that night. If I can do it you can too.

I'm day four out patient total right hip replacement. I went in at 6:00 am was home by noon. The first two days was rough, but now doing much better. I still need help getting in and out of bed, but see improvement each day. I'm going to have my left hip done as soon as I can. I'm taking my time, so scared I'll pop it out, hopefully I'll feel more confident as time goes on. S. Pereira

Been there twice and will need a revision in the coming years. Hoping I can wait as long as possible. This sucks, but once healed, it is something you wish you did sooner.

I just had my hip replacement March 8.. and I will say I'm comming along. I will be out of work six months..cus I'm an EMT..but it was the best thing to do. They made me walk ater surgery.... I did it and was able to start my rehab soon after.. people if u need it get it done.. the pain is gone

I've had both knees replaced and am having my first hip done on the 31st. I did both knees together, so I should do alright with just one joint. The hospital I have surgery at has an entire wing for joints and spine surgery. They do all physical therapy with the patients together. It's great for camaraderie and motivates because u want to at least keep up with whoever is next to you. The hip patients seemed to have a much faster recovery than the knee people, so I hope recovery for this surgery isn't bad now that I will be a hip patient this time around. There is always some apprehension though! These videos help tremendously. Thanks!

I’m going in in 2 weeks for my second hip surgery. 1st one was 3 yrs ago. Best decision I’ve ever made. Had me up walking 2 hrs after surgery.

I had my left hip done 5 days ago as a total hip replacement and all was going well in a fashion until they said there is a hair line crack in my femur and I can not put any weight on my leg for 6 weeks. Now I am bed bound and the only exercise I can do is done in bed. I hope I don’t regret this in moths or years to come.

I'm having a total on my left side, next Wednesday. I'm ready to be done with it.

Had my left hip replaced April 2018. Everything went great. I only had complications with my blood pressure and that kept me from walking for a whole day. But i did all of the exercises in bed. To anyone who is going to have this done...DO THE EXERCISES they ask you to do. When you’re not walking around, you’re sitting on the couch or lying down, do the exercises. When you’re up walking with the walker, I laid out a course through my house and did laps and timed myself. Made it more fun.

just had my left hip replaced with a new method of less invasive procedure where the surgeon does not cut through the muscle protecting the joint. Instead, the muscles are clamped to the side and the hip is removed.i I was operated on a Tuesday, 4 hours later I was doing laps around the hospital with a frame all pain was gone. The next morning I showed the physio I could walk and climb stairs with crutches and was sent home less than 24 hours later. The next day I was driving my car and only had to use one crutch for about 6 or 7 days. A few pain killers and nothing else required. I did no physio classes only a few stretches at home to make the joint stronger. Anyone contemplating this procedure ask about the less invasive hip replacement and settle for nothing less!

I had left hip replacement July 2021. It is 10-1-21. I had NO pain except lifting back in and back to bed. I had groin pain and it went away... My whole leg was numb until a week ago. Now my heel hurts. I have more pain than ever. My left leg is 4cm longer since the hardware Four Home therapists said they never saw any patient in their careers and I will have long-term back problems. Also, after home therapy, i went to an outpatient therapy place. They said they cant help me and they too had only seen 1 patient in over 15 years hop like I do to walk even with shoe inserts. Now I finally see the surgeon, not the PA for followup. The PA had xrays in their office after my 3 week followup and said 1cm plus. I am so upset. Hope i can find help. I have fallen twice..

My Total Hip Replacement Journey - Anterior Approach • August 29, 2018 • Surgeon: Dr. Salyapongse Dublin, California Hello everyone. I would like to share my Total Hip Replacement journey with you. I am Dr. Judith Gayle Olund, having earned my Doctorate Degree in Organizational Leadership in year 2012; however, today I will share with you a much more personal journey - my decision for a total hip replacement. Over my past 70 years, I have enjoyed a wonderfully active life that began with dancing lessons as a young child and have continuously enjoyed all physical activities throughout the years; even until most recently often dancing at the local pub Friday and Satuturday nights for two to three hours straight. So yes, I ignored my slow but sure developing limp (over at least five years) and was finally diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my hips over one year ago (bone-on-bone). I never really considered surgery, feeling confident that perhaps losing a little weight would help with my developing limp. So...I did work at it; I lost some weight and also began a wonderful collection of shoes hoping that they would solve my “walking problem" which was becoming more and more pronounced. More recently, it was becoming a "challenge" to walk from the dancing pub to the pizza joint just three blocks down the road. My friends were wonderful, allowing me to lean on them (literally) as we went for our snack in the early morning hours. I had never really been a pill taker during my life, but I began to take a couple of NSAIDS just before going out to my social affairs in hopes of walking better and hiding my "little limp.” Not possible; but, my friends were always so kind. Finally I had a checkup with my general doctor Dr. Calvin Lei at Stanford Health Care in Pleasanton, California. We discussed my walking issue which resulted in a referral to my now orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Aaron Salyapongse of Webster Orthopedics in Dublin, California; however, after my first consultation with the surgeon...I remained very hesitant. Maybe all I needed was a shoe lift - funny how we rationalize when we just aren't certain about things. Well, when my general labs were assessed - funny thing: I wasn’t even eligible for surgery because my blood sugar was a little high; and more importantly, my blood platelets were below the "normal" level important for surgery. So, I thought that just might be a "stop sign" for any surgery. Okay then - decision made. I thought it could be months before considering surgery again. Who knew? Dr. Lei, my general doctor, soon referred me to an oncologist in order to checkout my blood platelet situation. Dr. Kavitha Raj, a wonderful oncologist with Valley Medical Oncology Consultants in Pleasanton, assessed my condition and informed me that while my low platelets were normal for me, my platelet count must be in a normal range for surgery. Okay, so I took some prescribed medication wondering how long this could go on. Who new? A few days after the follow-up blood test by Dr. Raj, I unexpectedly received a phone call from Dr. Salyapongse’s office saying that I had been approved for total hip replacement surgery and was asked if I would like to schedule a date for surgery. I was definitely in shock...expecting to have months to reconsider surgery. I was then offered a surgery date in just two weeks which had opened up due to a cancellation. If I had not secured this opening, I would have had a month wait for surgery....that is, if I had decided to go ahead. We penciled in the date. Two weeks. So...because I was instructed not to take NSAIDS for ten days prior to surgery, I quickly realized how those little pills were actually masking my discomfort to a reasonable degree - more than I thought. By day eight without pills, I was reaching for the walls in my home (not wanting to put weight on my left hip); and, I was also compensating for my diminished hip movements by over-using my right knee which was becoming notably over worked. It was my time. I had a choice. Show up Wednesday morning for surgery, or go shopping for a cane and hideout more at home in the future. I showed up for surgery: Total Left Hip Replacement by Dr. Aaron Salyapongse, - Anterior Approach scheduled for September 29th, 2018; having just celebrated my 70th birthday two days before. I would like to share my surgery experience to add to your information gathering....but always remember, we are each uniquely different. I showed up for total hip replacement surgery with Dr. Aaron Salyapongse at six-thirty a.m. on September 29th, 2018, for admission to the Stanford Health Care / Valley Care Hospital in Pleasanton, California. Paperwork complete, it was now time - my time. I was escorted down the hall to the pre-op section and quickly asked to take two pills. I followed instructions and swallowed. Okay, I was then given my hospital gown, toothbrush, toothpaste, non-skid yellow socks to wear, and then asked to change and go potty; also, to brush teeth. Now it was time to get comfortable on the bed. So, I did. Three pre-op nurses were soon hovering over me -- each doing their task including the IV, asking many questions, and establishing monitors and so forth. I froze. What was I doing here? I questioned all my decisions in one moment. I asked the three nurses if it was normal to get "cold feet" about this time? My sudden tears prompted a three-nurse-cheering team offering kind supportive words of encouragement. My one minute freeze was over. Soon the medical team and my family surrounded me. Dr. Salyapongse, my surgeon, now in his light blue scrubs was asking me what procedure he was about to perform on me. I replied, "A total left hip replacement, anterior approach, 4 inch incision, then moving the muscles with your fingers giving access to the ball to be sawed off, which made way to the socket area which would be replaced with new materials; then a "test" implant (to hold the new ceramic ball) would be fitted before implanting the permanent titanium implant." He was impressed and said I could help : ) Well, somewhere along the line, the anesthesiologist mentioned that Dr. Salyapongse preferred that his patients have a spinal. Whoa…a spinal? I didn't have much time for debate to my amazement because the “meds” were doing their thing and a good "cocktail" was lingering in my I.V! : ) So then, after being wheeled into the operating room, I barely cared when asked to sit up and lean forward for the "dreaded" spinal. I leaned over with no cares: at some point, the anesthesiologist administered two shots. I couldn't really tell. Afterwards, I was asked to lay back and I did. It seemed liked the next moment when I heard the words "wake up you're done." Done? I was having such a nice sleep after months and months of restlessness. ***** After surgery: No pain. No nausea. No dizziness. I took one pain pill as more of a precautionary measure by end of day one. I was up and walking shortly after surgery to go potty (using a walker primarily to prevent any falls). Day one after surgery: No real pain. I called it my "brick leg" but no pain. I was up and walking (using a walker primarily to prevent any possible falls). Day two after surgery: I returned home, remade my new bed downstairs, and went upstairs for a shower. Nice. No pain. I am presently enjoying my recovery time (Day 6) and continuing to take meds for continued healing and good health. I feel amazing. No more anguish when I walk. Of course as to be expected...I will continue with healing and adjusting to my new life, my new hip, and my new ability for excellent mobility. My biggest lesson learned - let others help you when you can. Trust in the positive side of things. Accept blessings when they are right before you....and always give thanks. I’ve been through this. My left one has been done now I need my right hand sidevdone too. 8 don’t mind the operation it’s the recovery. So painful and difficult to get up. I feel for this guy.

Did you have the Anterior approach? My right one will be year on the 17th and the left is 6 months old. Both were done with the anterior approach, no restrictions and healing was so quick.

I just had a hip arthroscopy a month ago and I feel like this was a waste of time! I need a hip replacement, but my doctor doesn't seem to want to do it. I have osteoarthritis pretty bad in my hip too. I'm already having the same joint pain again. I know that hip arthroscopy doesn't fix arthritis.

My 74 year old mom is having this surgery tomorrow. I’m nervous of course! She is tough as nails though, so I’m sure she’ll get through! The guy here seems so young for a hip replacement! I’m assuming it’s injury related.

I just had a total right hip replacement with leg lengthening on October 1, 2019. Today makes one week I’m still struggling because my whole life my right leg was an inch and a half shorter and I catch myself trying to walk the same way. I’m in a lot of pain but I’m getting through this. Any helpful hints on what I can do also after surgery I became very emotional and have cried even up until today

I had an anterior thr in July 2017. I went home the same day. 4 mos of PT 3x a week and walking everyday. I am back to normal but still cautious .

I am doing well from my R hip total hip replacement anterior, was better than Posterior I had a Great doctor with the Anterior procedure I was in 3pm Thurs and out in room 6pm Doctor said I could go home next morning , I walked with walker and did PT at home then drove myself in 4 wks to pt/doctors off. So do not go to a horse doctor that does Posterior procedure go to a doctor that does Anterior. Now I have both hips with metal ... But doing great.

I’m 35 and I’m scared as hell for this surgery. Monday after 1 knee , 2 hip and 2 back surgeries I’m finally going through with THR. Nothing from past surgeries seem to help at all and now after becoming a dad for the first time I’m going for it. How difficult is the recovery and have you noticed any side affects like clicking or groin pain? Extremely nervous 😬

damn, im post-op day 15 of Ganz Osteotomy (also known as PAO hip surgery) due to hip dysplasia. Recovery is well known to be longer than a total hip replacement, but i hope that as an 18 year old i won't need this in the future. (cuz im already fed up and impatient to recover and would love to sleep more than 2-3 hours in a row). PS: i can tell you my experience for people that are interested in hip preservation instead of replacement (generally done for people under the age of 40-45)

I haven't scheduled my surgery as of this date I know I need to,just like everyone else I'm not looking forward to it at all. it's my right hip that needs it. if there was only another way that didn't constitute surgery. I am 35 years old and was just diagnosed with severe Arthrosis in my right hip. Cartilage gone. The other hip is starting to head the same way too. I am told I need to replace the hip. I’m very scared about this whole process. Can somebody help me with info?

Can somebody answer me this question, what kind of pain killer did your doctor prescribed for the first night of the surgery???? I had my left hip done on April 8, 2019.... surgery was finish at 11:00am by 3 PM I was in a room upstairs, with minimum or no pain at all. Then around 8pm pain was getting worst and worst...I ask for pain medicine and they gave me 10mg of percocet .... 1 hour . 2 hours later pain was stronger. I ask the nurse if there's anything she can put through the ivy that would work better. The nurse told nope only percocet 10mg every 6 hours alternate with 5 mg every 3 hours. Well I couldn't sleep all night I was in agony crying and suffering with the pain..... Do you guys think 10mg percocet was enough? Finally at 11 am the next day they gave me morphine tabs... and that took almost 80 of the pain in about 20 - 30 minutes... but I was 16 hours in really strong pain!!!!

Just cause you have pain in your hip doesn’t mean you need a hip replacement. Be 100% sure before getting one and if you do need one try to wait as long as possible before getting one

So i am 14 years old and i am having major hip knee and foot problems. My doctors told me that after the mris and xrays get done i might have to have a hip replacement. But we aren't sure if i have too. Because my hips pop out of place and my leg can turn around and when i walk my hip turns inwards and my hips pop and crack so i might have too have this surgery but I'm only 14 years old!!

I'm 29 and had femur neck fracture 3 months ago in a motorcycle accident. It was done by screw fixation but still no improvement in bone healing. Now doctors advised to go for total hip replacement.😒 If someone had same issue can u suggest.

I walked right after surgery. Didn't need help getting out of bed or showering

Just remember, you can't run or jog anymore after thr. And it only lasts 10-15 years. My left hip has degenerated cartilage on top of femur head. My right hip is normal. It hurts everyday and sometimes gives out on me, but i take collagen, and glucosamine and turmeric and one 500mg aleve a day, and it gets me through. No one cutting on my hip yet. Hopefully the continued use of collagen and glucosamine chondroitin will heal my cartilage, God willing.

I broke my femoral neck last august 25 2018. Doc said i need to have hip replacement but Im so afraid because im a dialysis patient and have an enlarged heart and pretty darn weak bones. Surgery cost so much we cant afford it and Im afraid of what could happen i Undergo surgery especially with my BP being high. Today theres little to no pain in my groin. my leg is going outward and I havent walk in almost 2 months.. i can stand u with assistance and will try to walk with crutches soon when I get one this week or maybe next week.. its kinda hassle going to and from my treatment riding an ambulance.. anyone who know someone with the same situation as i am? Please reply. Would love to read it.. Btw im 22 y.o..

Both my hips been bad for years.in some pain.barely walking with a walker and crutches.both knees are gone too.im not going to go in.i can't be down or on my back.

I work on a ortho floor as an aide I would of either raised the bed up a little to help him get out of bed the first time or have him push off from the bed to the walker it's the easiest way to learn js not saying his technique was wrong either bc it's different in every facility and hospital

I'm 37 years old and a male. I was told my left hip needs to be replaced. I read too much about the surgery and now I'm utterly terrified about everything that's involved. How painful is the surgery? When I wake up from the surgery, will I feel intense pain or do the painkillers pretty much cancel it out? How long does the pain generally last? How about pre-op preperation? For instance, how much does the epidural hurt? The epidural really scares me, and what are the chances of my spine/back getting messed up from it? How much does the cathedir hurt? Can they put it in when I'm under anesthesia? If so how much does it hurt coming out? I'm very into bodybuilding and I'm worried that with all the time it takes to recover, that I will become fat and loose all the muscle/strength I've built thus far... How long does it take to recover to the point where I can walk around normal? Also, how long does it take for someone to recover to the point that they can go back in the gym and start weight lifting again? If someone who had the surgery and who has experience with all this can please let me know the answers to my questions I would be very grateful. I'm avoiding the surgery because I'm so scared about everything involved, but I can no longer walk properly and have a terrible limp, and the pain is stopping me from living my life and doing all the activities I love.

I had a left hip replacement 4 years ago. They did it at 10:00 in the morning and wanted me walking at 6:00 that evening. I cussed the doctor out and told him not to touch me because I was in so much pain. Told him from the beginning I could not tolerate pain.
