Join us on a personal journey to witness the total solar eclipse of 2024, a mind-blowing experience I'm excited to share with you.
We met up with Simon d'Entremont at Meat Cove, but he's way more prepared than I am. All I did was clean my lens. I forgot to clean the dust spots off my sensor, though.
As I look around at the fancy photography equipment on display, I'm starting to feel woefully unprepared. Ah, well, it's all about the experience. Who really cares about capturing the same shot as 10 million other photographers?
I spoil Simon with some creative tech tips he's never seen before, and he teaches me to suck eggs with compositional ideas.
We start the journey with a major feed at Charlene's Seafood Chowder Shop before braving the saucy switchbacks of the Cabot Trail.
After a night in a mountainside cabin, we finally arrive at Meat Cove. It's the busiest day in its history, and we've yet to find our spot.
Will my lack of preparation ruin my shot, and do I even have enough gear? Will the world end during the eclipse, and why is Amanda crying?
There's really only one way to find out.

I am fortunate enough to live in the totality path. One of the nicest things about witnessing the totality was knowing that you were experiencing it with millions of other people at about the same time. It's nice to be part of a collective event like that (and it not be some huge tragedy).

I was able to get a shot of the partial eclipse, here in Central Alberta. Nothing like what you captured. Phenomenal video, well done guys. and you too Amanda !! As a wildlife photographer, wanting to branch out into landscape photography, I by chance found your site about a month ago. First one watched was the Abraham Lake video. Glad I did because it's been a trip ever since. THEN, to get Simon d'Entremont in this one.......what a plus !!! I learned so much from him as well, Gavin. So much so, that I was featured in Canadian Geographic's 2023 Wildlife Photography of the Year competition with him !! Never got to thank him for what he does for us out here, so......thank you ever so much Simon d'Entremont !! Now, twenty dollars seems to be the going rate. If one of my landscape pictures ever make it to publication, the cheques in the mail !! Cheers,

I drove about 6 or 7 hours to my cousin's house in Arkansas to see it. I set my cameras up in his yard. My rig isn't too the level of Simone's but I did buy a star adventurer tracker. It worked great. All I had to do was take pictures. The week before they said it was going to be cloudy. Even up to the day before we weren't certain. We had a clear sky that day. I photographed it all the way through from start to finish. I took a 9 shot bracket during totality. I'm on my way back home now so I haven't edited my photos yet. I did edit a few with my phone but I can't merge the brackets without my computer. I forgot to change my settings when I got done with the bracket shots so I still had a slow shutter speed and bracketing on when the sun popped back out. I may have got 1 or 2 usable diamond ring shots but I did not get Baily's beads on 3rd contact. I had a second camera being me with a wide angle lens so I could be in the frame. I forgot to take the filter off during totality so those shots are no good. It was an incredible experience that I'll always remember. I'd to go to the 2026 eclipse but I doubt that week happen. Maybe I'll still be alive in 2044. I think I got some great shots. It's hard to tell looking at the back of the camera. But the way I had 4 minutes of totality. My cousin's house was within 10 miles of the center line. And I still screwed up with that much time.

I betcha Meat Cove had never seen that much traffic before, holy cow...the traffic at the Dunes in Bouctouche was insane, lol. The light just before and after was soooo strange! I didn't even try to make a video that day, even though I had about 3 minutes of totality where we were (too many people around freaks me out still). Those solar eruptions were so cool to see! "Look how he is...as he is!" 🤣 We need to get Gavin that next 11K, he deserves that first 'play button'.

wow, I was getting secondhand anxiety as you were talking about how little you prepared for this. I spent hours and hours over the months leading up to the eclipse figuring out and practicing exactly the settings and photos to take during our 4 minutes of totality. Not having a filter and waiting until totality to check focus, oh man I absolutely could not. To each their own I suppose. My planning paid off, and I got just about every shot I hoped for, but in some ways not worrying about the photos probably helped you just experience the moment more. For your first eclipse is the best to just experience it imo. I hope you enjoyed it regardless, my first total eclipse in 2017 was mindblowing, and I am extremely glad that I decided to drive 7 hours to see & photograph this one

Meat Cove was quite the novel place to go for this eclipse, especially because the tip of Cape Breton was the only place in Nova Scotia to be within the path AND because Nova Scotia became legend when it was named in the song “You’re So Vain.” The NS reference in the song was “You flew your Learjet to Nova Scotia to see the total Eclipse of the Sun.” Now if you had also flown in a Learjet to NS, then you definitely would have earned some bragging rights, enough to write a book about your eclipse experience. Maybe you still did! Congrats🎉🍾

I traveled from Duluth, MN to Vincennes, IN for 4 minutes of totality. I worked with Vincennes University to project the eclipse for others to view on campus while I was photographing the event. This was my third eclipse and each has been a sort of spiritual experience. Sharing with so many others just increases the specialness of the day. Looking forward to August 2026 in Iceland.

Sadly, I was stuck with 62% of totality and wasn't totally prepared. Our forecast was for complete cloud cover all day, but when I realized that the clouds were going to give us just a hint of sun, I rushed home from work to grab my camera and an ND filter. I got a couple of decent shots, so I'm not disappointed.

Ace video Gavin . I experienced the 1999 partial eclipse here in the uk . I agree it’s quite a surreal experience. Birds singing then going to roost . Then a bit later doing dawn chorus. There was a bit of wind that day . Then as the eclipse was playing out the wind dropped . The birds stopped singing . It just went weirdly quiet . I shall never forget that day . Not sure if I will see another eclipse.

I'm so glad you all got together with Simon. "Look for the biggest camera rig" LOL Thanks for sharing your images. I planned on going to a place for totality but I could only do a day's drive and the places I could go were calling for cloud cover and rain. So, I ended up closer to home and did sequence shots of the partial. So, I really enjoyed this. Thank you for sharing!!! Thanks always for the humor!!! I hope you get to do more videos with Simon.

A safety note to anyone using a DSLR (or other optical device that delivers the suns rays through an eyepiece) - *never* look at the sun directly through your viewfinder. Always use the "live view" monitor. The IR radiation can cook your retina and you wouldn't even feel it because the retina has no pain receptors. Even with 10 or 15 stop ND filters, as many do not stop IR radiation even though they stop visible light. With mirrorless you won't damage your retina looking through the electronic viewfinder, though you still might damage your sensor.

Love those high quality tips for those of us slightly less prepared for an eclipse (or too poor for for that rig of Simon's). This was my third solar eclipse and I wasn't too excited about the photography, but I did go outside to see the light change. I was glad to see that you and Samantha got some good shots of it, Gavin. Couldn't figure out why you and Simon wanted to climb that hill to photograph it. Were you trying to get closer for a better exposure? I got some fine images of the 2017 total eclipse and I was satisfied to just observe this time. BTW, hope you are starting to feel better now. You are still a little dark under the eyes but as spring progresses you will feel a little better every day. The winter blahs will fade. And don't forget to eat a big bait of the cure-all poke salad when it starts to sprout. You have to pick it early when it is only 3 or 4 inches tall.

Hey Gavin and Amanda, thanks for sharing your experience. I was lucky to watch the October 1999 eclipse in Germany. Unforgettable. It is a mind blowing experience. - To whom it may concern, that so called solar prominence at 7 o’clock has about the hight of at least five planet Earth (educated guess). They are quite stable and may remain for weeks or even months.
