My second year of running continues with my first attempt at the summer version of this classic endurance obstacle race on Sunday 28th July. I wasnt sure what to expect but was really looking forward to it after building up with some decent races earlier this year and working on upper body.
I learned more about myself here. The course is a proper challenge and requires a decent level of fitness to get the most out of, but really its the mental focus on the tasks in hand - climbing A-Frames, walking along ropes, the Interrogation Chamber etc and putting those personal fears to one side that gets you through safely. Other than some interesting cramp towards the end (my big toe curled under and was locked in place under my right foot for a few minutes) I didn't have any serious problems though.
The marshalling and crowd support were all excellent and a testament to the organisation that goes into this event.
Completing it was amazing and I felt I'd achieved something special afterwards. Just after I collected my medal, I had the good fortune to meet and shake hands with the legendary Mr Mouse who was milling about the crowds. A fine end to an excellent day!
Notes:
My GoPro battery gave up at the end with about half an hour to go but I think captured most of the great moments. Check out my footage of the Torture Chamber at 8:00 minutes in . . . ;-)
