Very Kind Jeff, thanks. I did write a book about my Looping the USA on this bicycle. It is available for free here: batteryblocs.com/groceries/the-loop-the-usa-book/ cheers, Shawn
I have upgraded! I now use two of these, bolted to the upper caliper brake standoffs, one on each side. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EJWB62U/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
What configuration of Battery Blocks did you use for each side of the bikes fence posts? Are you still using the 750 Watt Banfang mid-drive on the cargo bike? I am considering a cargo bike, not for touring but for groceries, trip to the beach with cooler, umbrella, and beach chair. What would you advise for this type of activity with the cargo bike? Thank you.
Hi Steve, I used a 20P14S configuration- split into two 20P7s, one on each side. I would not recomend the Bafang- I would recomend a generic Chinese direct drive rear hub motor with about a 1000 watt controller and a pedal assist as well as a twist throttle. The Bafang mid drive under heavy use will pull the spokes from the back wheel. My battery was designed for 120 miles and would also be overkill. I would recomend more a 6P to a 10P 14S battery.
@@shawname2 Thank you. Which size fence post(s) would a 6P -10P 14s hold this capacity with battery blocks? I like the idea of a split dual batteries on each side for balance.
For a 10P14S build you would need 14 of the 10P BatteryBlocs. For the 12P14S you would need 14 of the 12P BatteryBlocs. You would use a BMS in one half that protected both halves. You would have me make you some end caps or use the ones sold for the fencepost tubing.
I love the bike Shawn I'm now trying to set up a 12v USB to charge my gadgets. Fascinated by your battery monitoring system. What kind of USB set up have you got for charging your gadgets? Is it a separate 12v battery you've got stashed away? 🤓
Oh no, it is a 60 to 12 volt converter. Having a separate 12 volt battery would be too much trouble and an extra charger to carry. www.amazon.com/DROK-Waterproof-Converter-Regulator-Transformer/dp/B017SQ2PUG/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1476644616&sr=8-5&keywords=60+to+12+volt+converter
+Shawn McCarty So a step down voltage converter. It looks small. 4 wires . Is the wiring straight forward? Next I've just received my Lyen Cycle Analyser and controller. Hope it will change my fortunes. Grin technologies seem to be switched on.
No, it is a golf cart converter. www.amazon.com/EPBOWPT-Voltage-Regulator-Converter-Waterproof/dp/B01KSSL8L8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1477044572&sr=8-1&keywords=golf+cart+converter+48+to+12 Once you get to 12 volts going to USB is easy. Numerous converters for autos.
where the hell did you find a BMS with Bluetooth. I stopped running BMS is on my bike but my longboard still has one and I would love to see what's going on with my batteries via phone
What is a longboard? I mean I have one for surfing but it doesn't have batteries. I'm going to assume it is a skateboard. The BMS i used would be too big and expensive . It was made in Europe. I am going to be coming out with a cheaper BMS that is controlled by the Android platform. But you could just use cell loggers. They are much cheaper. You can get them at Hobby King. You can look at my other video "How to build a safe and better battery without a BMS."
awesome,...just a word of caution: I was charging behind a kangaroo,...and the worker noticed me when dumping the trash,..and rather than say something to ME,...she went inside and called the COPS,...!! ( they let me go with a warning: "$tealing electricity" is a Crime)
I did go on to ride 10,000 miles in 4 months looping the USA. I used every available outlet I could find. I asked when it was possible. I only got told to move on once, when I was charging at an abandoned highway way station and a police man saw me. I never had any other incidents, nor did I ever have anyone tell me "No," I think you just got unlucky Daniel!
I had that happen once too! I was charging at a closed truck scale and a cop pulled up and told me I was stealing. I told him I had ridden 6000 miles and was using maybe 3cents worth of electricity. He said I had no morals because stealing was still stealing and ordered me to leave. If there is an opportunity to ask I ask though.
