Hello friends! It's July, so that means only one thing: it is Tour de Fleece! We shall be spinning wool for the next 23 days straight, or at least on the days that the cyclists in the Tour de France are cycling. In this video I vlog stages 16,17 and 18 of the Tour de Fleece where I spin the Zwartbles fleece we have skirted, washed and combed last week. For all this spinning we shall rely on Jillian, my compact spinningwheel, a Louët S71.
I have asked you guys some questions to have interesting topics to talk about these 23 days. In today's video we shall mainly talk about some personal stories: my hobbies besides spinning, my reading habits and dream travels.
Speaking about travels, you can check out our history hikes on ‪@TheHistoryHikers‬

I think I might lose my mind if I had to stick to one hobby forever! I love the variety. I also tend to go in phases. Before I got back into needlecrafts, I did a lot of photography, art, and writing, among other things. But no matter what I do, there always have to be creative ones in the mix!

I would recommend "The bear and the nightingale" (De beer en de nachtegaal in Dutch) by Katherine Arden! I've listened to it while driving to and from work and I really loved it. Planning to read the second and third book this holiday. And thank you everybody for the book recommendations!! 💜

So many hobbies, so little time… 😉 There are some fiber festivals in the Netherlands. ‘De weversmarkt’ in Hoorn is not too far away, for me at least. It is next week! (26/7/2023). But I have to admit I drove from Antwerp to Groningen and back in one day to attend ‘Midwinterwol’. Sadly, this fair is no more.
@MijnWolden
@MijnWolden Год назад
Hoorn is still a +/- 3 hours drive for me, coming from Limburg. I just got the tip of 'dag van de wol' in Eindhoven, which might also be doable from Antwerp!

I love that you’re a Church nerd, I am too! There’s always something more to learn or read 😊 While not a Church related book review, A Lady’s Guide to Fortune Hunting is a charming Jane Austen style book. Quite witty and often comical, I enjoyed it immensely

The wind heard you say people were giving you too much wool and was like "I'm helping :D" bless its heart. I feel you on the fiber festivals >_> every craft thing is like quilting and scrapbooking with a couple of stalls for other crafts hidden in a corner. As for books, my personal recommendation would be anything by Claire North/Kate Griffin/Catherine Webb (yes it's all the same person). She does a lot of urban fantasy as well as plain fantasy, some more political novels, and (in her younger audience stuff) fun victorian fantasy mysteries.

Ah and now I have confused the wind of course and that's why it gave me a hard time on my bike yesterday 😂

Too many hobbies to count! Reading, writing, spinning, and knitting are my biggest ones, though. For book recommendations, The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, as well as her book Circe, are incredible. I cant say enough about them. If you like historical fiction, then Matrix by Lauren Groff is stellar. It's about a woman who becomes the head nun (matrix) at a monastery. So good.

Hi Jente, I hope you and Dries are OK xx ❣️❣️❣️❣️ I'm glad your Fleece is safe, after being " windswept " around your garden. That's a very long list of hobbies. I don't know how you find time to do so many different things. In your reading list, if you like "Historical Novels " then I can highly recommend Jean Plaidy. I think I've read nearly all her books. She also writes under a pseudonym. Her name is then Victoria ( alas her surname escapes me). Those are also good books to read. I knit, crochet and of course spinning.and reading, all sorts of different genres of books. Your Handspun Yarn is looking amazing. Will you have enough yarn to knit the matching Sweaters??? I hope you have. I haven't done as much spinning for the TDF as I wanted to. I'm glad that I'm a One Woman team. Thankyou so much for sharing this video podcast. 🌟🌟 Happy Spinning and TDF Sweet Fibre Friend 🎡🚴‍♂️🐑🥰☀️ Take care and stay safe Lots of love, Blessings and Big Hugs to you both Jen xxxx ❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏🫂🫂🫂🫂🐕

I don't always have the time to do all my hobbies, some take the forefront while others go a bit to the background at times and they switch around. It helps to have set times for some, on friday and Saturday I go to artschool, so that's drawing and painting, and then I go to my mom and we go hiking, and then we play a game of Scrabble 😂

ha ha ... I was just about to say you forgot sewing as hobby 😁 I unfortunately thought you were going to tell us that your fleece got stolen - I am from South Africa and stealing is like the No.1 hobby here - very sad I know 😔. Definitely a multi-passionate person - sewing, quilting, crochet, beading, mosaics, reading, knitting, embroidery ... when I was younger - hiking, camping, gardening, baking, making preserves, jams, pickled veggies. I even grew my own cannabis and extracted the oils for skin creams, pain and cancer medications, hair treatments. I will try many things even if only once - i did some chain maille and whipping, and micro macrame and a tiny bit of decoupage and made windchimes and suncatchers and fabric painting. And until very recently I rode motorbikes from the age of about 15 (NO not the ganster stuff 😂) does that count as a hobby? but it was a serious passion . And as a single mom I used to do false nails and mani pedi's and facials to earn extra money. And there is soooo much more I would loooove to do - given time and money of course. (is being very chatty a hobby ??)

Current hobbies are looking after my flock and trying to blog my way along our journey on our new smallholding despite my disabilities. Used to love playing D&D online with friends, gaming and reading, but sheep take up most my time and energy. Now learning to process my own wool. Just got my first drum carder last week (preowned) and needed to repair / make a new driveband as the manufacturer couldn't give an eta on having bands in stock (not helpful) Today is washing Icelandic lamb fleece day, hopefully. Just need to the weather to play ball so I can dry it as i don't have a little spin dryer 😅

I gasped with a true and deep sense of betrayal! The wind, a thief! I hope that some of the fleece is still salvageable, even with the VM. As far as book recommendations go, I'm going to second The Goblin Emperor (which is a beautiful and complex book interspersed with moments of such deep kindness that it makes me cry every time) and The Bear and the Nightingale (a series I loved so much that I read it at the library and then went and bought myself copies so I could own it always). I'll also add in The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels (the author is having *so* much fun with language, there's lady pirates who fly houses and care deeply about proper etiquette, it's an absolute blast) and Paladin's Grace (by T. Kingfisher, one of the main characters is a paladin of a dead god who knits, and it's the only novel I like with knitting as a major activity).

I visited your beautiful country back in 1994. My late husband had business in both Brussels & Antwerp and I very much enjoyed visiting. If I say “quack,” is that meaningful to you? 🍺 I live in Virginia in the US and it was 32°C here today, which is a little cooler than it was a few days ago. It’s so humid that it feels much hotter and it has not been pleasant. If you ever make it over, come in the spring! The Zwartbles is lucious.

It's never to late for a book rec right...? lol My recommendation is the 'Broken Earth' trilogy by NK Jemison (or anything by her, actually, she is amazing) which is scifi meets fantasy, in that the science is so advanced as to flirt with the magical. Also, The 'Six of Crows' duology by Leigh Bardugo is a fast paced fantasy heist, and is a huge amount of fun to read - the world building and social commentary isn't anything like as subtle as 'Broken Earth' but the characterisations are unique and interesting. There's also an active fandom for the books & a netflix adaption if your into that kind of thing. (Note: the adaption actually focuses on the Shadow and Bone trilogy in the same universe, but there are characters from the duology as well)

The Handwerkbeurs in Flanders Expo this past November had several stands where indie dyers were selling spinnable fibre, spindles and E-spinners. In the middle of the expo hall there were several spinning wheels and the possibility to try them out. Granted, the majority of the stands were yarn, there were also stands for sewing, doll making etc, but I was surprised to see that there were at least 5-6 stands offering braids to spin. Perhaps not worth driving over all the way from Limburg, but it’s better than nothing. As I live around half an hour away it’s a feasible distance for me. Should you need to be in the vicinity of Ghent in November, it might be worth timing your trip to coincide with the Handwerkbeurs and go have a look?
