Why do so many folk use electronic shifting on the TD? Its only advantage is better shifting but is heavier and seems to fail a lot and needs spare batteries & chargers. A few riders had issue last year with it too. Not a good gear section at all for long bikepacking.
Well, you can have shifters on your aerobars in addition to your brifters, and shifting requires less force (hand fatigue) that being said, electronic shifting is the devil, I don't trust it, and we don't need more bike parts to end up in landfills (looking at you, carbon frames).
@@Paksusuoli95IIRC, Leal Wilcox switched to electronic shifting because of this, but I agree, if you don't have a really good reason for it, mechanical is definitely the better choice.
Prediction Day 6: Laurens will sleep in and then make his way to the lava Mountain lodge. Unless he will opt for taking a ride to Jackson to have some work done on his tires. Or maybe he calls the mobile mechanic in the Teton area? Uba will go steady and hit for Pinedale. But maybe has to stay in a cabin near Union Pass. Justinas will do only a short sleep at the Flagg Ranch, do some odd seaming napping near Lava Mountain Range and then shoot for the parking area between boulder and Atlantic City.
Great recap. A healthy part of my daily breakfast routine - more of the insight from you as a rider on the course is great too. Just a little less mouse movement please - it's really hard on the eyes after a couple minutes.
What are the SRAM battery operating temperatures? Don't they usually specify them? Every snow adventure I've ever read/seen has people putting batteries near their body to keep them warm.
I think that he is there to get new tires. On Insta it looks like that he gets an ride to an bike store. He is out of innertubes and an tire is not good anymore.
Hi Josh, you mentioned one (or more?) Facebook groups as source for informations (route conditions, refill options ...). Could you link them or name them?
10 years ago nobody has knowledge... Today, folks shared training advice, we can see almost whole route on google maps, check opening hours online, using airbnb, booking etc.
Someone needs to invent a robust shifting mechanism that doesn't rely on batteries and finicky electronics. Like imagine if you could connect a derailleur to a shifter with a cable!
If you check out Lachlan's ride, I think his average moving speed was 12.5mph. I've never seen anyone else close to that. (Could be a different tracking system calculates differently tho)
I think lauchlan chose his weather window , though first couple of days I heard Lauren's on one of his short videos mention they were going faster than Lauchlan at that particular time
Taking nothing away from Lachlan's achievement, which is considerable...It must be palpable to everyone watching this year how much the TD is a mental test as much as a physical one, and every decision requires some kind of risk assessment. How different it must be knowing your brother is always near by, ready at any time to pull you out if things get dicey.
@@joenormal6421 agree , its really a completely different event. comparing the tour divide race to a fkt time trial any time of year they are just not the same
IM NEW TO ALL THIS. BUT IM PULLING FOR JACKSCOTTKEOUGH, FROM AUSI HAVE A FEW FRIEND THAT DID THE TD BACK IN 2013, IM HAPPY TO BE DOING 50 MILE DAYS, BUT HAVE NEVER BIKEPACKED REALLY. PRETTY COOL STUFF AND ALOT OF REALLY STRONG ADVENTUROUS PEEPS OU THERE!
