Meet Sunny, my Salsa Cutthroat bike. She's dialed in for bikepacking the Tour Divide / Great Divide Mountain Biking Route (GDMBR). Check out the setup and tips that helped her escort me 2,800 miles from Banff to Antelope Wells without any mechanical issues. I rushed to build her 6 weeks before the race, when my previous Cutthroat was stolen. This is Part 1 of a series of Tour Divide / bikepacking tech, gear, and prep videos. I'm hoping to share my passion for bikepacking and endurance mountain biking and help set you up for success on the TD or any epic adventure on your bucket list. #tourdivide #bikecheck #bikepacking

@@DirtyTeethMTB OK - cool. Looking at it looks like they may have not cut it at all. There are 3 large spacers and 2 1/2 spacers. That makes me feel better. @@DirtyTeethMTB One last personal opinion question. Fully modded Cuttroat, would you rather have a modded Timberjack, or Mukluk as a secondary bike? In Wisconsin we have longer than most winters, some years are a pretty good amount of snow. I have rode my mostly stock Timberjack but was thinking of going with a fat bike instead of my Timberjack. If you could have two nicely modded and dialed in bikes, which would be your choice between the two? Thanks for your time and opinion.
@DirtyTeethMTB
@DirtyTeethMTB 4 года назад
I'd take the Mukluk especically with your long winters... I currently ride 3 bikes. A cutthroat, a mukluk, and a niner rkt9 rdo (full suspension mtb). i've had my mukluk for 8ish years and wouldn't trade it for anything. the newer ones are sweet. i've had many clients that I build a 2nd set of 27.5+ wheels for, and they just swap the wheels out and ride the bike year round... fatty in winter, plus in summer... whatever you decide, the best bike is the one you're riding!

Great Build! Such a bummer about the other bike getting ripped off! I've thought about downsizing to 170 cranks for a tighter shorter stroke for helping with the steep grinding climbs. That bar tape gel combo looks comfy for cradling your hands too. In the end it's all about the cradle and stroke!

Alan, awesome videos bro! Really enjoying the learning and all the added bike stuff, build specs, bike packing gear detail you provide. I am looking at a Salsa Cutthroat and wondering with a second set of rims and 700x32 slicks, will the bike get close to keeping up with some roadie friends on fun get together rides 20-22mph (fitness always being a factor) or will I blow up to keep up? Trying to avoid a 2x as well. Asking a lot of my possible “quiver killer”
@DirtyTeethMTB
@DirtyTeethMTB 3 года назад
Hi Brad, the 1x gearing is what might hold you back on 100% road rides... you'd need a big front ring, which might not be ideal for steep gravel/singletrack climbing... and I believe you're limited to a 40T max on the Cutty, which still might not be big enough... with a 2x and the 32c tires, you should hang with your. friends no problem... hope that helps!

Hi Coleman, thanks for watching and commenting... those were my first questions to Wolftooth before ordering... they assured me there would be no issues...and there haven't been... Awesome video and bike, sorry about your ganked one from Sea Otter, it's quite a problem there from what I hear. Been looking at getting a gravel bike for the first time, single track rider since 96. What would you say is a good single day mileage ability before jumping off into rides like the tour divide?
@DirtyTeethMTB
@DirtyTeethMTB 4 года назад
thanks for watching, Kenneth :) good question... tough to answer... as you know, mileage on techy singletrack differs from gravel or pavement... and then factoring in a heavy, loaded bike... so I think about it more in terms of hours in the saddle on a loaded bike - I'd start by doing some overnighters and building up to multi-day adventures... also depends on your goals... some people do the divide in 15 days, some do it in 50... so yeah, hope that helps a little?

I first saw your part 2 video, which I find so interesting on using aero bars with lots of bag attachments. But then I notice when I watch this video you can attach yours on your steerer tube. Just wondering about your thoughts if I'm gonna use aero bars that are clamped on the handlebars. Anyway, I have a cannondale trail bike 27.5 that I was planning to customize for touring. Now, I'm using it with a rigid fork, 3x deore T6000 crankset and 11-32T (10 speed cogs). :)
@DirtyTeethMTB
@DirtyTeethMTB 3 года назад
Hi John, I mount my aerobars to a Fred Bar - this allows me to still mount feedbags to my handlebar, and gets the aerobars up in a more comfy position/a little higher up... there's nothing wrong with mounting aerobars directly to the handlebars, as long as you're comfy, and are ok with losing some real estate - sounds like you're Cannondale is a pretty cool bike, ride on!

Loved the video. I'm about to pull the trigger on a Cutthroat frame to build up, and I'm wondering if you would mind answer a few additional questions that weren't in your video. 1. How tall are you? I'm 5'9, so just on the cusp between small and medium. I see you got a medium. I'm trying to figure out which direction to lean. 2. (just figured this out by clicking through your links. Thanks you for being so thorough!) Love the wheels, and I assume they've been very sturdy for you. What's the spoke count and inside diameter of the rim? 3. Total shot in the dark question that I don't know if you can answer. You put a 46t granny gear on your cassette. Salsa says the 2020 Cutthroat can only take 40t. Is that just because of they way they set up their wheels, or of there something else I might need to take into consideration? Other than cassette spacing and derailleur capacity, I can't figure out what the issue might be. Thank you!
@DirtyTeethMTB
@DirtyTeethMTB 4 года назад
I"m 5'9" and went with the medium. A little more room for bikepacking and a little more stability on fast descents. The small might be a little more "nimble" with tight singletrack, cornering, etc - but I don't need that on a bikepacking rig... The MD fits me well... Hope that helps :)
@DirtyTeethMTB
@DirtyTeethMTB 4 года назад
oops, just realized there were more questions :) - #2: nox teocalli rims, 26mm internal I believe... all specs are on their site... it's their "enduro rim", I went with it over the xc rim for a little added beefy factor/peace of mind, and it's still very light - 32H. They've never come out of true in over 6,000 miles, so yes, they are sturdy. #3, I haven't checked the 2020 specs on the cutty, and I'm not sure which model you're looking at... but yes, it should be based on derailleur capacity. my force der has a 42T max capacity "on paper" per Sram. I asked wolftooth before pulling the trigger, and they said the 46t gcx would work no problem... and it has been great. i'd recommend shooting wolftooth an email as well... let me know if you have more questions! happy riding!

@@DirtyTeethMTB I just saw found this on prowheelbuilder. It looks like a good rim width. It's important to me that I have something I can also use back home for other purposes (this rig will probably end up doing some commuting duty with the dyno hub), so a little thinner rim than I have on my MTB is important. However, I'm hoping to get a new cutty next year and I'll probably go with the 56 (but l'll have the luxury of checking out both sizes before making my final decision). I've compared the geo of my bike: salsacycles.com/bikes/cutthroat/2018_cutthroat_force_1 to the new one extensively... for bikepacking/tour divide type riding, I think slightly longer wheel base/stability and a little more storage room are a good thing... better chance of fitting a full bottle on top downtube mount, and I've had issues of my toes rubbing the tires... so I think I'll enjoy a little more "stretched out" cockpit with the slightly slacker head tube angle... my bike was spec'd with a 90mm stem and the new 56 comes with an 80mm which adjusts for some of that... I also like the option to fit 3 bottles in the triangle (54 only fits 2 bottles)... hope that helps a little - shoot Salsa an email, and let me know what they say... I've got a few more TD prep videos in the pipeline... I'll probably start posting 'em in March/April... ride on!

@@DirtyTeethMTB Thanks for the super fast reply. I understand it’s subjective. I’ve been comparing the geometry of my other bikes to the cutthroat but having your 5k miles experience on one and opinion is.. comforting. Thanks again

@@alexneedleman7192 glad to help, I'm just always scared to sound too definitive when it comes to sizing questions over the interwebs... so many variables! Whether you wind up on a 54 or 56, I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy riding it down the spine of the continent :)

What your gearing setup, what is your average speed on tarmac? Also, with a different tire set up, would you recommend this bike for long distance road use, such as for the TABR? Thanks and really have enjoyed your videos!

Thanks for watching and commenting, Gary... I'd go with a road bike for Trans Am, with a 2x drivetrain - my Cutthroat is a 1x11 with 36T oval ring in front and 10-46T in the rear... great for TD which is majority dirt and lots of steep climbs... but I'd be looking for more top end on TABR... on the TD, I was probably averaging only around 12-14mph on flat pavement... hope that helps!

Hey! Thanks for the vids...lots of good info. Wanted to pick your brain on sizing. The geometry changed for 2020 slightly and they added a smaller size. Your “medium” is now the 2020 “56”. That said, the stack height remains the same but the reach is 1cm longer and the stand over is a few cm’s higher. The wheelbase also got a few cm’s longer. Other than the shorter stack height, the 2020 “54” is probably closer to your 2018 “medium”. So....just curious if you were getting a 2020 Cutty if you would go “54” or “56”. I’m a tad over 5’-8” and am leaning towards the “54”. Any thoughts/insight you could provide would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Hi Energy Lab, thanks for watching and commenting. If I was looking at the 2020, I'd be leaning towards the 54" (I like the feel of smaller bikes when I'm between sizes) ... but I'd try to ride it first and/or at least talk to Salsa and get their take as well... good luck!

Just started watching this series and was wondering if you ran into mud on your Tour Divide or other gravel/ off road riding or races that you see a draw back to chain and cassette vs rohloff/pinion with belt?
@DirtyTeethMTB
@DirtyTeethMTB 3 года назад
Gordon, yes I've ran across tons of muddy sections on the TD... as well as other rides... but my drivetrain never failed on any of my bikes... dirty, grimy, gunked up yes... so I'm still fine with traditional cassette/chain setup... but as I just mentioned in another comment of yours... I'm definitely not opposed to IGH or pinion with gates, etc... lots of pros to those setups... for me it's just been easier/cheaper to stick with cassette/chain... ride on!!

I have a 2020 Cutthroat 600. I’m trying to add lower gears for the climbs. I did 1/2 the GD this summer. I want to do rest next summer. In order to make your modifications do I need a new chain and derailer , or can I just replace the chain ring, cassette and do the cassette modification with the ones that you did in your build?

Really surprised that a rider doesn’t need a suspension front fork for the Great Divide. Can you comment a little bit about why one isn’t necessary? Also, probably revealing my total ignorance here, is the great divide trail the same as the continental divide trail?
@DirtyTeethMTB
@DirtyTeethMTB 3 года назад
Hi L. Crawley - thanks for watching and commenting... the amount of gravel roads/non-technical riding/pavement far outweigh the more tech singletrack on the Tour Divide, so for many riders - a rigid fork and/or a drop bar bike is more efficient than a suspension fork/traditional mtb... but people use all kinds of bikes... the right bike is the one you're most comfy on... the great divide mountain bike route is not the same as the continental divide trail... it's confusing, I know! the GDMBR is 100% bike friendly "route", created by the Adventure Cycling Association... it does intertwine and utilize sections of the Continental Divide Trail, but is not married to it... the CDT is primarily a hiking trail and enters wilderness areas that are off limits to bikes... hope that helps, Ride on!

I see that you use the original Salsa fork and not a suspension fork. Any learning here from the Tour Divide, as I see many riders using suspension forks?
@DirtyTeethMTB
@DirtyTeethMTB 4 года назад
Hi Bent - yes, many are using suspension forks, Lauf, etc... but I still like the rigid fork... but I also rode only a rigid single speed for many years, so I'm used to it... the only parts of my body that were beat up at the end of the TD were my butt and my mouth/throat/taste buds... hands and arms were fine... but some people have issues with hand/arm/wrist fatigue... if you do, I'd definitely consider a Lauf... ride on!!

SRAM hydraulic disc brakes versus mechanical disc brakes, thoughts?
@DirtyTeethMTB
@DirtyTeethMTB 4 года назад
Hi L, these days, I'm all about hydraulic disc brakes. much more stopping power and modulation - especially noticeable on loaded/heavy bikepacking rigs... pros for mech are cheaper and field serviceable, but I find modern sram and Shimano hydro to be super reliable... thanks for watching and commenting!
@user-wv5xl7mc3k
@user-wv5xl7mc3k 4 года назад
@@DirtyTeethMTB Perfect, thanks dude! Field servicing is why I'm on the fence between the two but I'm noticing that most of the builds I'm seeing are hydro. My main concern with mech is mud blocking the exposed cables, which obviously isn't a problem with hydro.
