Good solid advice! I'm going to try the Sea To Summit pillow after 40 years of filling a stuff sack (arthritis in neck). If you're ever in a pinch for a ground sheet, I've used Lawn N Leaf style trash bags, cut open down sides and folded out they fit a one person tent well. Nice work, thanks!

Emergent bike packer here but 50 plus year hiker rate this as an excellent tell-it video. The only thing I switch up from your setup is water filter because my ride country is like Great Divide Basin all the time. And sleep with cows. Surly Bridge Club for High Plains drifting.

Would you consider hammocks as an option for bike-packing? I've done RAGBRAI this way, and the C&O / GAP trails. BUT...you need trees, or poles or something that supports the hammock. I also travel with a fly, which helps with rain and offers some privacy.
@DirtyTeethMTB
@DirtyTeethMTB 3 года назад
Hi Barry, thanks for watching and commenting - on certain bikepacking trips, I consider a hammock as a great option - I own one and love it... when you know where you're gonna camp, etc - I don't think it's ideal for the TD for exactly the reasons you mention... a tent or tarp setup offers more peace of mind, on that route IMO - ride on!

Thank you for making this video. I've been thinking about an ultralight tent but I was concerned it might not stand up to this kind of prolonged use. Sounds like the Big Agnes has the seal of approval though. I would love to see a video about how you cook and what you eat on the route. I usually use a micro burner with MSR fuel canisters, but I don't know if there would be anywhere to get the fuel canisters on the route.
@DirtyTeethMTB
@DirtyTeethMTB 3 года назад
dirtnastyish, as long as you treat it well, the big Agnes tent is stellar... it is ultralight so you do have to be cautious... I'm still using the same one in the video, and I'm on a job where I sleep in it a couple times a week and have beaten it up pretty good... I'll be putting out a video on food/resupply on the TD soon... but for bikepack races I don't cook/carry a stove... on social bikepacking rides, I have a small MSR stove that I love... there definitely are places along the TD route to get fuel canisters - especially in the larger cities... ride on!

Is there any trip where you’d forgo a sleeping bag? I’ve got a trip coming up, 2 nights, with low overnight temps in the 50-60 range. I am thinking of using a long sleeve sleep shirt, light insulated jacket, long bottoms with socks and bivy. It used to work for hiking but I was 15 years younger.
@DirtyTeethMTB
@DirtyTeethMTB 3 года назад
Hi Bill :) Yes, there are definitely shorter trips where I'd forego a sleeping bag and other comforts. Depends on your goals (ultralight/speed vs weight/comfort)... sometimes I'll just carry a bivy and my lightweight puffy and be good with that, if I don't plan on sleeping much... knowing I can throw on rain gear as well if I'm still cold... anyhoo, hope that helps! Let me know how it works out for ya :)
