Great stuff! One other med item to consider - mepilex pad(s). 5 - 3x3 on Amazon are $12. My wife is an ortho nurse caring for kids with CP. These pads are used in high friction places as often patients don't feel pain and they would chafe raw. These pads will stay in place - even in the hot sweaty butt on saddle situation. Gamechanger for me.

We used mole skin and foam in the military. it might be worth commenting how we used it. We cut out the center, slightly larger than the blister so your blister can stick through it (do not compress the blister.) Then we put another piece over the top to cover the blister entirely. This stabilizes the skin around it and keeps anything else from rubbing on the blister itself. if the blister is really big and painful, drain it with a small pin hole and leave the skin in tact. Make sure your base piece is big enough to grab and hold onto healthy tissue.

Nicely done. You’re the first actual rider who mentions food hanging. No other person’s kit list mentions anything to store and hang food. First trip in Yellowstone August 2017. 84 mile day. 54 miles in I saw the ass end of a moose just as i was rounding a bend with a slight drop. I had to go back for a pic. I pumped the brakes and pulled off to the side. My 28mm front tire sank immediately into peagravel. I pull a BOB on a fast Raleigh road rat gravel frame. I went down hard. Massive abrasion on my left forearm/elbow. That's when i was thankful for a bottle of 91% hand gell. I was cleaned and bandaged before the first car came by and checked on me. 91% gell is also a great fire starter. Never got the pic of that massive moose ass.

Thanks for pointing out the achilles tendon problems. I wouldn't have foreseen that. The best way to prevent is to train for it, which I'll find a way to do (maybe squats and deadlift?). You can also treat it and other problems, and that is with Voodoo wrap as explained in Kelly Starret's Becoming a Supple Leopard book. It accelerates active recovery. I will be packing a roll of Voodoo wrap from Rogue Fitness (heavy) and a hard ball to loosen muscles, and I've solved all joint aches with these two (whether knee pain due to the IT band, achilles tendon pain when I started cycling, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, back, neck, etc).

Mole foam and benzile peroxide are new to me. Thanks! Bear experts (see Dr Tom Smith video) recommend not using a bear bell. Either they ignore them entirely, or curiosity may cause them to investigate.

Bear biologists say the bells don't do anything at all. You either want to make loud noises with your own voice or emulate the sound of sticks breaking somehow. Bell noises mean literally nothing to a bear.

Hey Alan... yet another great review and tips. Regarding your Industry Nine hub and you mentioning how loud it is. I bought a new wheel set for my Fargo this month. They are Industry Nine and I rode yesterday for the first time with them. They aren't so loud though. My test ride at the shop I could barely hear them. I was sort of anticipating and looking forward to a different sound then what I had before and having that well known bee hum sound but while it's there and I do hear it it's just not that loud. Bike shop owner told me something about the grease and once that starts to wear off they will get louder. I rode 60 miles yesterday and might be my imagination but near end of ride it may have increased a little but still not where I thought it would be. Your thoughts and have you experienced that with yours. Thanks Alan and I refer to all of your Great Divide reviews often. The links you share are much appreciated!!
@DirtyTeethMTB
@DirtyTeethMTB 3 года назад
Edge8edge, thanks for watching and commenting- I9 uses / recommends Dumonde tech for their hubs. The thicker grease makes the hub quieter- the oil makes it louder... you can double check with I9- also, mine are torch hubs, if you have the newer hydro hubs, they have more engagement and might be slightly quieter... anyhoo- hope that helps- the folks at I9 are awesome... I’d see if the have anything to add- ride on!

Love the videos. Consider you don’t have a good option for life threatening bleeding in your kit. Bike clothing may not absorb well and if you’re bleeding you will need to stay warm too. Also alcohol prep pads are a good idea but only 3 wont last long at all.
@DirtyTeethMTB
@DirtyTeethMTB 3 года назад
thanks for taking the time to contribute, Anthony - what do you carry for bleeding? I'm always looking to improve my kit, and would appreciate your insight... I carry voile ski straps (which multi-task elsewhere on my bike) which can serve as a makeshift tourniquet... and if anything is truly life-threatening, which I hope I'll never have to encounter... the SOS button on the spot tracker... hopefully I could keep myself alive until help arrives... I guess it's only fitting to be talking about such grim subjects on Halloween :) - ride on!

Thanks for all the info, mon! Esp the mantra about drinking beer 🍻! I have an unrelated question, if that’s ok: can you take a CO2 cartrdige on a plane? No pepper spray, I realize, but CO2? Also, how do you carry gear on the plane without luggage? Disposable box? Bag? Any tips, also, on getting home from A Wells? Thanks, bro!
@DirtyTeethMTB
@DirtyTeethMTB 3 года назад
good questions, Rick - I used a disposable cardboard bike box. I packed a bunch of gear in the box along with the bike, but kept it under 50lbs. I took an old gym bag on board the plane for my carry on luggage with the rest of my gear. Some people mail civilian clothes home from Banff, but I wore old shoes, jeans, t-shirt that I trashed along with the gym bag... There was actually a designated area at the YWCA for GD riders to dump their empty bike boxes FYI. As far as I know, you cannot travel with CO2 - unless rules have changed. I'd double check on the TSA website, etc - should be easy info to find. You'll have to get CO2 locally after you land as well as the bear spray. As far as Antelope Wells - there's a couple people you can call (Jeffery Sharp or Juan More Time, I think... )that will shuttle you hook up with the local bike shop to coordinate a bike box too... here's a great travel resource: oneofsevenproject.com/tour-divide-transportation-guide/ -- hope that helps - best of luck!

@@DirtyTeethMTB Your videos on kit/gear/set up are extremely valuable. I'd love to give the TD a go some post-pandemic day. I think the main issue most of us who are considering this event is fitness/training. There's actually very little information out there on training for this thing (besides Lael Wilcox's "just ride to the event from Alaska" plan) so if you have any sort of structured plan that's workable for those of us with day jobs, I think it'd be hugely popular.
