We had the opportunity to tour the inside of the Royal Canadian Air Force's new CC-295 Kingfisher Fixed Wing Search and Rescue aircraft at CFB Comox. The CC-295 is built by Airbus Defence and Space, and is a variant of the C-295.
Specifically designed to perform Search and Rescue (SAR) missions across Canada, the aircraft is equipped with integrated sensors that will allow crews to locate persons or objects from more than 40 kilometers away, even in low-light conditions. Its communications systems will increase interoperability with other search and rescue assets, such as the CH-149 Cormorant. The fleet of 16 aircraft will replace the CC-115 Buffalo and CC-130H Hercules fleets in their search and rescue role at four locations across Canada. (Be sure to watch the video of the final flight of the RCAF CC-115 Buffalo on this channel).
Unfortunately, a number of technical issues have necessitated additional test and certification, and that has delayed Initial Operational Capability, which as of July 2023, is projected to be in 2025/26.
It will be interesting to see if the internal configuration changes in any way from what you see in this video and what will eventually be operational.
Thanks to the members of 418 Search and Rescue Operational Training Squadron for their hospitality.
