Grand Canyon Railway's 2-8-2 Steam Locomotive #4960 has been a fan favorite for years. She rolled off the erecting floor of the Baldwin Locomotive Works in August 1923. She ran in freight service for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy for many years, and was kept alive after most of the steam locomotives had been scrapped so that she could be used for community outreach. In this role, she became known as 'The Teacher', because of how many young children she introduced to the dying institution of steam railroading.
Grand Canyon Railway acquired the locomotive in 1989 and spent considerable money and man hours on an extensive restoration, considered at the time to be one of the most comprehensive rebuilds of a steam locomotive in the modern era. She entered service on Grand Canyon Railway in the summer of 1996, and has operated every year since. Modern improvements continue to be made, and she still has many lessons to teach.
In this video I give a detailed tour of 4960, discussing how many of her systems work. We will take a good look at the tender, walk around the locomotive pointing out many interesting parts, and finish with an extensive tour of the cab.
This is the 3rd video I have done on 4960, and the latest in a series of videos which take a more in-depth approach to railroading.
