The King’s Life Guard
The King’s Life Guard is conducted by soldiers of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment at Horse Guards. Horse Guards is named after the troops who have mounted The King’s Life Guard here since the Restoration of King Charles II in 1660.
The ceremony has remained mostly unchanged for over 350 years.
Changing of The King's Life Guard
The ceremony of changing of the King’s Life Guard starts at 11am with the Old Guard formed up on Horse Guards Parade. As the New Guard arrives, a trumpeter sounds a royal salute and the officer salutes. The New Guard forms up facing the old one.
Once both lines are still, the corporal major, senior non-commissioned officer and sentries of the New Guard (the first relief) rein back their horses and leave for the guard room to take over their duties, which lasts for 48 hours. The sentries from the Old Guard return to the parade ground and the entire Old Guard returns back to barracks.
When the monarch is in London, there is a ‘long guard’ consisting of an officer, corporal major (who carries the regimental standard), two non commissioned officers, a trumpeter and 10 troopers. When the monarch is away, the guard is reduced to two non-commissioned officers and 10 troopers known as a ‘short guard’.
Whatever the season or weather, members of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment ride down from Hyde Park Barracks in Knightsbridge to take over guard duties.
TIMINGS OF DUTIES
The Guard Change currently takes place on: Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11am.
The two iconic soldiers on horses that mount duty on Whitehall at the entrance of Horse Guards change on the hour every hour from 10am until 4pm.
This ensures that, regardless of the time you choose to visit the museum, you are guaranteed a captivating spectacle of ceremonial duties in progress.
The King’s Life Guard is the name given to the guard duty performed by The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment at Horse Guards. It dates from 1660 when The Life Guards mounted a permanent guard at the entrance to Whitehall Palace.
Responsibility for mounting the guard alternates between
The Life Guards and
The Blues and Royals.
An inspection at Hyde Park Barracks decides which ‘relief’ a soldier will do: the smartest will carry out his duty on his horse and the least well turned out will do longer duties on foot. The guard then rides to Horse Guards via Hyde Park Corner, Constitution Hill and The Mall.

The success of this new "rule" 🙄 depends almost wholly on the guards enforcing it, and many just turn a blind eye, and continue to let tourists do what they want to those poor horses! Have some pride man! Speak up! If this guard, and the others that won't enforce this "rule" 🙄 choose not to enforce it, than they don't need to be out there. He's ultimately breaking the "rule" 🙄 by assisting the tourists in breaking it. It's gone from ridiculous to ludicrous at this point! It's making them a laughingstocks!

I couldnt believe that tourists had been allowed to get away deliberately breaking the rules. The new sign couldnt be seen as tourists constantly stood in front of it. Police officers were unfortunately stood close by totally absorbed conversing with each other. Children were almost inside the box with the horse whose fault would it have been had they been bitten. Please step up and enforce the rules its not good enough if only a few step up to the plate. Our soldiers male female & horses deserve respect to carry on with their duties without such disrespect. Sorry guys but we are proud of you all dont let us fown

The guards have to be consistent. The one guard and horse is all the way in the box, an Asian man stands in the box posing and even strokes the horse before leaving. Others saw this so the next Asian man gets in the box to pose and the guard tells him to get out. Can't shout out one and let others in, touching the horse. One girl was reaching her long arms in the box, touching the horse, guard said nothing. Just get rid of the signs.

Why would the trooper allow her to pet the horse? this causes nothing but confusion to the tourist and you have guards that absolutely enforce the rule, then you have those that don’t do there job and make it harder for those trying to enforce the rules. If you can’t enforce the rules you have no business in that horse! Such a huge difference in the reds and blues! Blues put up with absolutely no nonsense and rules will be obeyed, they demand respect which they should, much respect to them!

😮 We are all tourists. The difference is we are RU-vid tourists. We watch everything like a hawk from above. We see everything and we can hone onto the foibles of human nature. The tourists who mill around Buckingham blindly are like mice. They see only their immediate needs to touch a horse, touch a guard, pose for pictures . That’s most prominent to the cost of appropriate and honorable behavior. Some nationalities are worse than others . Yes I have witnessed that at Buckingham. Although I loath the ignorant and rude behavior, I have learned a lot about people in general and myself. I can tell one thing for sure… I will always be extra careful to respect where I am and to follow the rules. ; otherwise I have no right to complain.

He didn't forget to shout out in fact, he seems to look the other way when tourists are touching the horse. I don't know what he's guarding. There are only 2 guards that I see shout out. One is a female guard and the other is the black guard who doesn't let anything or one get past him.

A lot of them touch the horse for no other reason than to get a reaction from the guard. Maybe it's a case of the guard not rising to their bait. Telling them off is just counter productive as it will just encourage more to touch the horse to get a reaction. The tourist do see & know the sign as it is a warning. They touch the horse because they want to this will get them a picture which is against military rules. These tourists don't understand that these horses are anything but decorative. If this were Pre-WWI 'Horseland' in London, people would know that these are beautiful but still working horses among a myriad of horse types and not so unusual as they are now in the current city landscape. I reckon citizens wouldn't bother them and would consider gawkers and tourists really a bit much and worthy of a conversation with the Bobby.

I think the signs were put up so the military would not be sued if a horse bit someone ( like the fainting Chinese lady a week or two ago) It is up to the individual guard to assess his horse's temperament and decide if it is safe for the tourists and isn't unduly distressing his mount.

I'm sorry, but those signs mean nothing to these disrespectful tourists who could care less. Unless the Guards buckle down and tell them to back off and do not touch the horses. Because it doesn't look like the signs are doing much

STOP ALL MULTI - BAR CAMERAS. The photography was ruined by these. TOTALLY supportive of movable fences around the Guard box. The IGNORANT, ARROGANT tourists obviously NEED to be treated like Babies.... I believe the police guards MUST show more leadership in protecting BOTH Guard Troopers AND the Horse Troopers, who are at WORK. It should NOT have to ALL fall back onto the Guard Troopers to YELL at ignorance!!!! 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

Shouldn't be up to the guards to tell them, the signs are there. Again its the ignorance and entitlement of the tourists.

Disagree that’s part of a troopers responsibility to protect and take care of his horse. If you don’t want that then assign MOD police officers to monitor tourists at each box.
