I would also challenge you to not bring lord solar. Yes he gives you CP and with an extra 120 points lugging him around he can order anything at a distance but I've been playing without him for a month and a half now and I must say that I don't really miss him. Sure it would be nice to have my tanks hitting on 3s but all my infantry already have officers with them (2 units of Kroger's with Marshal and 2 scion command squads) so I'd only really be buffing my exterminators and my hydras. Solar and his crew just feel too expensive to be sitting in the back trying to not get shot. Having so many orders to me also feels like you give yourself more of an excuse to not play with "good" units and rely on the orders to make them functional as opposed to using orders to supplement your flexibility. Take aim isn't to turn on your shooting, it's to overcome -1 to hit or to ensure you get more hits overall. It's a bit of a headspace change that's taken me all of 10th to get through my thick skull. I think a big issue you're running into is that you seem to be running a list that is trying to play 9th edition where guard struggled to score primary and instead would kick ass on secondary. As you said, more infantry will help turn this around. Maybe even find room for 2 krieg squads so you can attack two sides or double down on the center. Lastly I'd also want to challenge you to try to build your list around taking fixed secondaries. The tactical cards are cool but you never know when they're going to screw you. Even with low scoring games and losses I've had I've been scoring my fixed secondaries consistently even if I'm not making them all the time. consistency is key with the guard! Good luck at your next event, and don't be a stranger in your own discord! Ask questions and for list reviews, we're happy to help, mate!
Great video with some solid learning lessons. I was in a tournament this past weekend and ran a baneblade, exterminator, Dorn, solar, and two seperate 5 man scion teams. Additionally, there were some catachan infantry teams, chimera's and a tank commander. I found I had too much firepower. Aldar didn't stand a chance as I just blew the knights up. I did go turn one which helped. The tank commander was awesome because when he died, he just blew up the wraith guard. The scions are really good for secondary play. I took fixed behind enemy lines and deploy teleport homer. I just farmed points like no one's business. Incredibly broken if you can deep strike and not get shot at. Gaunts ghosts would be even more powerful than a 5 man. I think you should try more tanks. The sheer amount of shots is just horrendous. Especially when you FOF on the exterminator and creed (on another regiment unit), nothing can save unless invulnerable saves are at play.
I've been an avid Mlrdian Glory fan for a while, and he's been having quite a bit of tournament success lately. His general rules of thumb for a balanced guard list are: 80-100 battleline bodies with transports counting as 10, 4 tanks, whether they be dorns or russes, and 200-300 points of artillery. Most 20-man squads and tanks need an order. Straken is extremely efficient. A lot of the time you can substitute a scion squad for a cyclops in reserves for your secondary-scoring. These are not gospel obviously and balance changes, terrain, local metas etc. may change the proportions here and there, but MG's extremely experienced and has been seeing quite a bit of success in 10th. Hope this helps someone!
Super thanks, MG is an experienced Guard General. Your above suggestion is sound. I'm now running 5 battleine squad, one with command squad, ogryn bodyguard and Straken, 2 Chimeras and scions and its working well. Weirdly our battleline units are used more to turn off enemy primary than hold objectives. Guard have a lot of great tools but you need to be very precise in how u use. Definitely a high skill army compare to others!
Oof been on that 0/3 train before. Good on you for letting us learn from your experience. I'll be bringing double Dornies to my tournament this Saturday.
Enjoyed playing against you in game 3, was good fun! But yes Wraith guard are disgusting and horrible to counter, they allowed me to make miststakes and not be punished for them
James! Absolutely, great game! As I said I could have played better and learnt a lot. I probably could have managed the Wraithguard better via screens/chaff and have changed my list since we battled. I will probably go to the February RT again, hope to see you there!
Didn't know you could attach the attaches also to the lord solar unit. That's pretty neat! How has that worked for you for spotting for only the indirect I presume?
Hmm it was more for the 12" deep strike deny from the astropath. I have been burnt countless times by 3" deepstrike however I didn't come across it at this tournament
I think if taking Bullgryn they need to be in a unit of 6 not 3. You probably needed more infantry and possibly getting rid of the Chimera could afford these. Also you had a decent amount of artillery but only had the one Scout Sentinel for the buff. I like your cheap ratling snipers idea and are thinking similar
Cheers Chris, agreed. Bullgryns would work as a 6, 3 simply isn't enough to be a threat/roadblock. I have however actually dropped them completely and fully rewritten the list. To no one's surprise I now have 6 battleline units
After 3 rtt's in 10th with IG, my final conclusion is, that unless you are a very good commander, they are super weak. Main problem is, both army and detachment rules are super weak, and on top data sheets are over costed or to weak as well. There is one built going heavy on artillery with 3 manticores and 2 basilisks, wich can work, but is super boring playstyle. Main problem is that with artillery you trigger all the buffs, but you don't with the rest.... I am super annoyed sofar in 10th, especially considering the 9th debacle with our codex, and the new one not even be announced to be in the tube....
Lord Solar is getting into melee anyway and the argument that he costs too much to just sit at the back has weight. Why not try a large squad with him and add a bodyguard.
Yeah I tried him with the command squad + Infantry blob. Weirdly given he is calvary he gets stuck sometimes. Am trying out Straken, Command squad with Ogryn bodyguard + Catachan squad to hold an objective and so far so good
