Excellent review! The Tout Terrain Scrambler would be the perfect all around road/off road tourer. It could handle the GDMBR while still being road worthy. I’m going to have to sell my Surly Disc Trucker.
@RidingBicycles
@RidingBicycles 2 года назад
Yes they are very good reliable bikes. The Surly Disc Trucker is a very good bike also though so make sure you are selling for the right reasons. The Scrambler is a bit more ‘sporty’ than Trucker and you do have the reliability of the gearbox. I would imagine the Scrambler with a steel fork is about the same weight as a Trucker. 12.5 - 13kg.

Hey man, thanks for the video. The grinding noise in low gears and lack of drop bar shifters are what have held me back, along with frame options and price. But the first two concerns seem outdated and the price seems more and more justified. The Tout Terrain seems like a nice do-it-aller. So maybe that concern is gone too. Thanks for the detail!

Two stone, 5-1/2 pound. My Priority 600 (New York City), aluminum frame, Pinion C1.12, Gates Carbon Belt with dynamo as well as pannier and porteur racks and a FoldyLock comes in at 3 stone. Then again, bikepacking isn't all about weight.

Thank you for all the information concerning this bike. I have one question, how can one buy a Tout Terrain bike now that there are no dealers in the UK..?
@RidingBicycles
@RidingBicycles 2 года назад
Hi, yep you are correct they used to have dealers and then they got rid of them and went to a direct sales model and at the time it was pre brexit when I got mine. After Brexit they did not have the systems in place with their delivery company to make a good experience for the customer, so they took the UK off their shipping list. I am hoping in the further they will use different shipping methods and they put the UK back on. When I get a frame from the US they use a company that adds all the import fees to the delivery cost and that means the package by passes customs and comes right to your door. Hopefully they will use something like this in the future. Anyway if you want one now, a goo way to do it might be to get out to Germany pick one up and bring it back with you. Or even have an adventure and ride it back. I did that when I bought a Pilot Pinion Bike the Vamos, their are other benefits to that too. Or you could look at getting your next pinion bike from Nua, Solace cycles or rennstahl or falkenjagd. The steel rennstahl brand has all the features of the Tout Terrain. The others are titainium. By the way Sonder cycles in the UK also has a Pinion touring bike now the Broken Road. A great value titanium bike. Cheaper then the steel ones mentioned here. alpkit.com/products/sonder-broken-road-pinion www.rennstahl-bikes.de/de/ www.falkenjagd-bikes.de/de/ www.nuabikes.com www.solacecycles.com

Should have asked this in my last post! Can you compare this model with your Outback? That would be great!
@RidingBicycles
@RidingBicycles 3 месяца назад
The Outback is a mountain bike at heart if you ride mainly single track or rougher stuff then the Outback would be the better option. If you are planning to ride mixed surfaces and a little bit of the rougher stuff then the Scrambler could be the better option. The Outback is designed to take some abuse and heavy loads so it is not light. Mine came in at about 16kg with a sus fork and about 14 - 15kg with the carbon. The gear range though helps you get over anything, it would impact your speed though, if speed is an issue for you then either bike might not be the best option and both are made for enduring long miles carrying loads without maintenance issues.
@NoahAvery96
@NoahAvery96 2 года назад
Awesome review! Also saw your video on the Pinion and Rohloff. Have you found the gap between gears with the 12 speed Pinion vs 18 speed Pinion for a touring setup a big deal?
@RidingBicycles
@RidingBicycles 2 года назад
Hi, no I thought you would but it is not a problem at all. A fact with triple and double derailleur set ups is you have so many duplicate gears depending on what front cog you are on so actual different gears with a triple is a lot smaller and 1x12 derailleur sets must have a similar jump. So it is not noticeable at all. The steps between the gears on my P.18 are so small I probably end up shifting 3 at a time.

Thank you for this informative review. Would you know if it is possible to put a handle bar bag on, or would that require a modification to get the cables out of the way?
@RidingBicycles
@RidingBicycles 3 года назад
Depends on the bag but that was a concern of mine. The cables can move out of the way. They are not that rigidly fixed in place so with the variety of bags I have I think I would be able to make it work.
@RidingBicycles
@RidingBicycles 3 года назад
To follow on. A Orilieb style touring handlebar bag would fit behind the cables. Not sure how bikepacking bags would fit. I imagine they would sit just below the cable hood exits but it would depend on the style of roll bag. I think in the promo vids of the bikes they were filmed with bikepacking bags.

Hi, great video and thank for taking the time! I have a question in regards to the dynamo hub and the battery charger. I have ordered the same setup and can see in your video that it comes without any actual front and rear light. If I want to install such lights, is there a connection point at the dynamo hub available or do I need to connect the wires somewhere at the battery? Thanks :)
@RidingBicycles

Hello. There are two wires that come off the bottom of the battery. You connect your front light to these and then your back light connects to the front light. Cheers

Contemplating a Pinion+Gates for the good granny gear and the ease of ripping the bike through the bushes while stealth camping in dodgy countries. @@RidingBicycles Tout Terrain Outback 2019, Scot in S. Spain. I came back from Patagonia and electrified my bike, reverted twice for Balkan journeys, so I reckon I should get A TT Outback and leave my e'ed bike in peace, maybe I'll just toss a coin...Cheers for a great channel.
@RidingBicycles
@RidingBicycles Год назад
Cheers for the compliment. I was thinking of deleting the channel, blog and the instagram etc because sometimes you just want to go out and enjoy the ride and not worry about taking pictures and filming stuff (live in the moment so to say) but I think I am just going to have a diffident attitude towards it and think some rides are for me and some rides are for filming. Anyway back to your situation. Seems like you have done some good trips already. The Outback is a great bike. If you could pick one up for 2000 euro it is good value. If the gearbox has been looked after and had its oil changes then it should be good for hundred of thousand of miles. Just check and see if you would be happy with the steps between the gears compared to a P.18. For most people the slightly increased steps between the 12sp and 18sp are not a problem, but I have a bad knee, no cartilage in it it is painful to ride any kind of bike so I really appreciate the smaller steps of the 18sp, I have had 12sp gearboxes and it was fine. It is more of a precaution thing when I am thinking my knee gets worse during a ride etc I asked where you live just so I could see what other options were out there for you. As you are in Spain you can buy gearboxes from this website, I get all my supplies through them. pinion-bikes.de it gives you the option to maybe just buy a frame or frame and gearbox from either from TT direct or another brand maybe to keep it cheaper. Other brands to consider are NUA www.nuabikes.com, nordestcycles.com/en and www.nicolai-bicycles.com/Start I have no experience of Nicolas bikes but a channel subscriber bought one and he loves it. Knowing that you can buy new gearboxes separately from that first link does give a bit more flexibility to build exactly what you want. For all belt and cog repeated purchase I get them from Gates direct www.gatescarbondrive.com there purchase system is a bit different you add everything to your cart and you place your order. You then get an email a bit later and the details for payment come with that, but it is really small and easy to miss. I was waiting once wondering how and when my stuff would come and they redirected to me to the email they had already sent and there it was, they were just waiting for me to pay. Hope this has helped,(probably made you more confused now you have more to think about 😂 ) cheers Dylan 👍🏽

Great video. Lovely bikes. Very thorough. Tout Terrain are a German brand. Without plugging them even more ;@), can you talk about the buying process whether there are any dealers in the UK and if so is there a possibility to test ride their bikes before you buy or would a trip to the Netherlands or indeed Germany be on the cards? On the Tout Terrain website there is their bike configurator. Once you have chosen your configuration, TT then saves it and gives you an order number to take to your local dealer hence whether there are any dealers in the UK? What did you do? Also what Pinion gearboxes are on your Scramblers as Pinion does two types AFAIK the C and P variants and also different number of gears for each? Finally what wheel size do your bikes have? Did you say they were 650b? Sorry you might have said in your video. I am guessing you could have a flat bar version with twist shifter and mtb brakes so gears and braking are still together? At the point of ordering or prior do you think TT would be amenable to putting more eyelets on the rear of the frame for racks as you have highlighted there is only one which is taken by the mudguard stay? Just a thought. Once again great video. Good camera work. Many thanks.

Pretty much what I also wanted to know. I checked TT's site for UK dealers and then checked their sites, none of which gave any info on their bikes. I was lucky enough to get an almost new Metropoliton from ebay (less than 100 miles) that uses the Rohluff 14 hub & carbon belt and is fully spec'd. I love it and have thought about getting another model to go with it, probably a Pinion.

Hi, I have not got around to uploading that video yet as it came back with an error and everything is done on my phone so it takes about a week to upload. So they used to have some dealers but it appears that they are going to a direct sales model in the UK as the dealers that I used to contact don’t seem to promote TT stuff anymore. This is what it seems like to me anyway. For my Outback and the Scrambler I bought through their website. Having already had a TT Silkroad I pretty much new what I was getting so I felt confident doing that. BTW I have had an offer to build up a new bike which means I need to clear some of mine off. The Scrambler and Outback MIGHT have to go to make way. I am still thinking about. The Scrambler has only done about 12 miles as it has only been ridden to do the couple of videos I have put together. The Outback has done about 350. So if you know anyone that is interested I need to work out a price but I imagine we are looking at about 3.5k - 4K for each one. The Scrambler is showroom condition and actually so it the Outback once it has been polished up as there is not a mark on it.
