Here's a link to the online strategy guide I used: strategywiki.org/wiki/Tower_of_Doom. Also, certain colored keys can be used to avoid certain traps when held, but I liked to keep a weapon in my hand at all times.

Graphics are amazing for a 1979 console, makes me want an Intellivision again

I absolutely ADORE this game. I commented on your Hover Force video. I got my first "used" Intellivision in 1987. Christmas of '87 I got Tower Of Doom, Thunder Castle, and Hover Force. Thank you dad for being a loyal shopper at Radio Shack. It wasn't Nintendo, but it was good enough for me. I rocked those three games in 1988. I still have them. I'd like to add that I'm extremely happy that you are covering late era games. This is my era of Intellivision. The used system came with games like Night Stalker, Star Strike, etc. But these new games were ...well, new. And they are the ones that I have my nostalgia with.

Another game that has been on my list of must plays! I really like how it blends the first two games together and that it plays more like cloudy mountain :)

Tower of Doom really puts that 16-bit processor to use.

Intellivision always nailed their D&D licenses.

I had a vague memory of playing this game as a kid. Just found it this morning after months of searching without knowing the name. Very surprised it didn't come out until 1987. Based on my memories I was thinking early 80's, maybe because I think of that as the Intellivision era. A bit surprising as I already had an NES by this time.

Thanks this game was put on the Evercade’s intellivision 2 cartridge and this review helped me learn more on how it works. For a pre Diablo action rpg it’s fucking amazing!

High praise to make it number one! I wonder how many sold in 1987? Interesting to read that INTV took over Intellivision and released 21 new cartridges.

New number one. I didn’t have INTV as a kid, but we got a GameCube disc of Intellivision Lives circa 2005 and this was one of the games that really grabbed our attention back then. I

You definitely filled your pack with a lot of chicken legs. Great review! I love Tower of DOOM. Only played it on the Nintendo DS Intellivision Lives and Flashback, but it truly is the best rogue-like game on that system.

I played this ge as a kid in the early 90's. Didn't have the insert for the controller so I was guessing a lot.

And it's games like that which made me buy a flashback system. Now I have your number 1 and 2 games.

@Mitchell Azevedo So something IS wrong with the version on the Flashback! I thought something was weird about it when I tried to play it. I was so confused when it didn't seem to work properly. Thank you so much for confirming this, as it has bugged me for ages!

I'm lovin' all the lovin' for ToD, although it would have been nice to have gotten a credit as the original author (at ME). John did a good job finishing the game, although he did take out two of my coolest features (but perhaps he needed the ROM space).
@HryciuR
@HryciuR 2 года назад
Well props to you sir! One of my favourites then and still….What were the features John removed?
@danielmd4104
@danielmd4104 2 года назад
@@HryciuR One was a visual element - in the descending stairs scene between dungeon levels. I had developed a method to seemingly expand the color palette by flashing between two different colors on every frame refresh - the brain blends the two colors into a third. For example, alternately flashing green and red will be perceived as yellow. After reviewing all possible combinations of colors, I selected pairs that would make a series of darkening greys as the stairs descended into darkness. It appears that John just picked separate non-flashing colors and went with that. The second was a true innovation for the time. Knowing that completing the game at its most challenging level would probably take several hours, I wanted to have a "Save/Restore Game" feature so that one could turn off the box and come back the next day. How to do this when there is no non-volatile memory? I had code that would combine the generation key, current character stats, and the item in hand, combine with a checksum and create a "Save Code" that the player could write down. Thus the player became the non-volatile memory. When starting the game, an option was present to enter the save code. When verified, the dungeon would be recreated, and the character restored with his current stats and weapon (or whatever was saved in his hand). Of course, you would lose everything else in your bag, but that was the price of save/restore.
@HryciuR
@HryciuR 2 года назад
@@danielmd4104 Save would have been an innovative feature for sure. The visual element on the steps sounded really clever! Even without those, it was my favourite game on the system and still felt like a “next gen” game…at the time on par with NES games. Thanks for providing many great INTV memories with friends back then. Cheers!

Never seen this one. Was it even released in Europe?

I think intv focused mainly on the states only, so their games may not have reached Europe unless somebody imported them.

I had it back in the days living in Europe (Sweden). We didnt import it as far as I know.
