I turned tourist guide for the day as I showed ‪@BackpackerBen‬ around my home of Cornwall. Ben said he wanted to see the REAL CORNWALL at the start of his road trip filming bottom to top of the UK, so I took him to one of the most beautiful scenic places (Pedn Vounder) and then to Cornwall's steroetypically roughest town Camborne. We met the locals in Camborne and asked them what are the best and worst things about life there.
Check out Ben's channel here / @backpackerben and follow his travels around the world
Also here is Turkey Man's channel if you would like to check him out and donate to his fundraising ‪@turkeymanofcamborne8139‬

The more time I spend in Cornwall, the less enamoured I’m becoming with it - I don’t come down in the school holidays, I’m down out of season when I’m often the only person in the shops and cafes (especially in November and January when my ‘emmet’ money is evidently welcome!)I also know how to drive down tiny country lanes without any bother. Been coming down upwards of 10 times a year for over 11 years but no longer look forward to it and think it’s time I looked elsewhere.

To be fair Cornwall isn't immune from the same problems as everywhere else. Granted tourism is a plus and a minus for them. But with everything else the good and the bad depend on who you are. And it sounds a lot like where I live in Greater Manchester. Lack of jobs, not much to do, but we have enough shops that you don't need to go out of town to get what you need. We have trouble with drugs, antisocial behaviour, motorbike gangs. But where doesn't these days? I don't know if people think that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, but if you live anywhere for long enough you'll see everywhere is pretty much the same good and bad. I don't think you can escape it anywhere unless you live on your own desert island.

Honestly, you picked the worst people you could find to ask that question to in Camborne, they are clearly drunks and their only priority is alcohol. If you had asked many others, they would have said about the peak of Camborne, it's history in the mining days, before our government shut it down (like many other makers in England), hence why we now mainly rely on, fund and promote cheap Chinese imports instead of making the quality products that Britain was so famous for. The housing crisis is another story, it has turned from seasonal tourism into permanent sells to emmets (no offence). But all that creates is no homes for born and bred locals (the youngsters that could be the next generation have to move away), it wont be long before the emmets realise they have kicked out and damaged the locals that they rely on to maintain their properties that are empty most of the year with no income for them to take out of Cornwall where it was made.
@mickpowell8503
@mickpowell8503 10 месяцев назад
Not being funny bud but no one seems to have a go at the greedy locals who sell up to outsiders. If the price being asked is beyond the pockets of locals, what is the seller supposed to do? I'm sure if they let out in the summer season it brings in revenue for local businesses. We never focus on the whole picture and the locals who sold up skip off and are never blamed. Ask any seller who they would rather sell to and they will say whoever can afford it.

Tourism despite the propaganda is of little to no benefit to the people who live in Cornwall. Low paid seasonal jobs and nowhere for the workers needed for it to live, has now started to kill off tourism/hospitality hospitality business. If you can't get workers your business dies. We see the problem here . Difficult finding locals to interview , mainly 'good lifers' from up country that dont work or have a proper job that benefits the local community . Friendly trusting , hard working and hard playing people . A couple of drunks in Camborne is not representative of the Cornish and if you live near Penzance have a proper job and put into the community , you would know that as I did as I was absorbed into the community after a few weeks of work in the Penwith Peninsular. A community of fishers and farmers , engineers , builders and other intelligent local tradespeople although during the summer months had its fair share of benefit "benders" from up country , squatting on private land and filthing up the place . Pedne was my nearest beach , and a beautiful place to visit after the August Bank Holiday. I was included in all the activities of the village including rough shooting with the lads , organised by the local builder that should of won the contract I was working on , a lovely chap and wonderful Cornishman . RIP Tommy . No shortage of fish , seafood , pasties and pasty pies from the fisher folk in the village and really honoured when given the helm of Skipper Robert's seiner during a test run from Penzance harbour to Tater Du light and back . Nights "up a Treen " , the Coasties at Mousehole, the meaderies , local Rugby clubs including the Pirates in Penzance were great fun , parties and Christmas there the best a foreigner could hope for , and to be trusted with the families of the fishermen out at sea often for up to 2 weeks or more was the highest honour , a trust I never betrayed . Never once in my life before that had I felt I truly belonged and I thank those lovely people for that feeling . Thanks to Dougy , Jo , Robert and Bex in particular. The Cornish have earned the right to be cynical and untrusting of emmets especially " East Coasters " and if you took a little time out to study the history and politics of the region you would understand why this is so . The EU imposed bans on hake and haddock that kept the Cornish boats in harbour but permitted the Spanish and French boats to overfish our waters is just one example of the injustices dished out . The very industries that made Cornwall the place enjoyed by millions each summer has been destroyed by decisions made in Westminster with the mining industry and Brussels with the CAP and CFP . The first has been given new hope and I hope more mines reopen for local labour to enjoy , but until we actually see Brexit the chance of recovering from the last 2 while our government continues to pay into the EU club instead of restoring the fleets of Newlyn, Falmouth etc to 1980s level even , then the only profit seen will be that sent to the wealthiest of individuals of the Duchy Estates . If you have not been met with this level of kindness in your community " near Penzance " , then you never will and don't belong there and unlikely ever to be accepted . And by the way , true Cornwall is West of the Hayle ( not the Tamar ) and has been for decades , you should have discovered that from locals in your community . The rest of Cornwall fell decades ago , but I see signs that Brexit when it eventually happens , is perhaps too late to save the rest of it .

Ridiculously expensive and miserable. So much better going elsewhere,down to Europe for the weather,food,beautiful women and pretty much everything else. Only good thing in Cornwall is the rattler to drown your sorrows about everything else

98% grime is very cynical. I see more beauty than grime As for the not much to do brigade, go and find a past time that you can be passionate about. Find out what activities are occurring in the area

CAMBORNE INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE = Beach benefits £'s None are locals, all outsiders. The old working Cornish would have run this lot out of town! Along with the Entitled incomers who seem to be taking the pi** out of the area

There are many immigrants out there who are wealthy and have bought second homes. Also its already a dump around there anyways.
