Homeless In Cornwall: From £1000 A Week To The Streets

This is a conversation I had in March 2023 with Martin. He is one of the numerous people clearly living a life sleeping rough on the streets of Truro that I witnessed on that particular day. I spoke to a few of them, but Martin was by far the most engaging and willing of them. He told me how he had fell from a consistent life earning £1000 a week as a plasterer in Derby to a life living of the streets in Truro Cornwall. His honesty shows quite clearly how the thin veneer of a stable life can fall away from many if the dice roll that way. I have uploaded this video because I want more people to understand that every homeless person has their unique story and they deserve a voice and empathy from society.
#homelessness #costoflivingcrisis #cornwall #sleepingrough #homeless
*Martin mentioned in the video that he was receiving a lot of help from the charity St Petrocs which works tirelessly to support the homeless in Cornwall. Cornwall has long had a shortage of affordable housing. Housing supply for local people continues to be squeezed with more and more properties being used as holiday accommodation. The growth of online holiday lettings and the prevalence of second home ownership has led to a shift in the rental market with a reduction in tenancy availability for local people. If you are interested in supporting St Petrocs please visit www.stpetrocs.org.uk/homeless...

I hope Martin manages to find his feet again and doesn't fall into the trap of drugs and alcohol. I can imagine it's easy to get the taste for them on the streets. Easy enough to fall into that one with regular day to day living. Don't give up and accept homelessness as your future. This is just a temporary thing. Some homeless are just plain nasty, bullies and they prey on the weak. I've seen it with my own eyes in the local homeless shelter. Certainly picked a beautiful part of the country to sleep under the stars. Our Homeless need lockers to keep their belongings safe for the day. Perhaps they could then go and get some work. And in winter an area with a roof from the elements and underfloor heating as it costs pence to run. Good luck

I got speaking to a homeless guy in my town, he'd fallen on hard times, parents died when he was younger, fallen through the cracks. Got him some food, offered to take him for a few pints a couple of times (but he refused, not a drinker). Last time I saw him he was really gaunt, some other people had pushed him out of his camp. I got him some food an drink again and I've not seen him for quite a while since. He never asked for money the first time I saw him so I went back and gave him some and spoke to him, next time I saw him I asked him the same things and he was straight. Sadly the scammers begging make us all harder to the plight of the real people who need help. He was called Tom, I doubt he's still around given how I'll he looked the last time I saw him. Puts a lot of things in perspective doesn't it...

@@Lakeland283 Jill, it all depends. To be classified as homeless you don't have to be a rough sleeper: you can be sleeping on someone's sofa or be in temporary accommodation. Also if you are living in a vehicle. There's a lot of hidden homelessness. Me and my kids were homeless for almost a year due to fleeing domestic violence. First, the council told me I was deliberately homeless because I had a home to return to. The same man I spoke to in the council offices had been the one on duty a couple of weeks before when I had taken my ex in there, who had told him that if they didn't find him accommodation, my ex was going to murder me- they didn't even call the police, but surely you'd remember something like that! I think they get numb to it, there are so many in need and there's simply not enough accommodation due to Right to buy and of course population increase. So me and the kids slept on friends' sofas for months, before my friend wrote me an eviction notice which was the ONLY WAY they would put me and my kids in temporary accommodation. I didn't beg because I didn't need to, but some people lose their jobs due to situations like mine, having to flee to a place far away from home to escape violence, or they have their benefits sanctioned because they were unable to get to a job interview or look for work that week. I was one of the lucky ones because I don't drink alcohol, but I can see how easy it would be to drown your sorrows, just to keep warm at night on the streets some people start drinking heavily or using drugs, for the depression and hopelessness. There was an old guy begging who owned his own home, because he had had his disability benefits cut off, which he shouldn't have done, and the jobcentre wouldn't let him sign on because he wasn't well enough to work. He couldn't afford to put his heating on or cook, so he'd beg and go sit in the community centre to warm up. He had no money to put in the meters, but people used to spread rumours about him scrounging - he didn't have a choice.. Universal Credit has been a disaster for people who do seasonal work and self employed people who earn very varying amounts. They apply the "minimum income floor" which presumes you earn the minimum wage at a 35 hour week even when you don't, so many people are becoming homeless because there are weeks when they can't pay their rent so they get behind, when previously they would have been entitled to a top up in housing benefit occasionally, not any more! If business is bad for a couple of months, you are going bankrupt, when previously you would have that safety net until business picked up. They desperately don't want people to be self employed!

The greatest fear I think I’ve ever had is of being homeless and ending up on the streets. I remember watching “Cathy Come Home” and it suddenly sinking in that there was no such thing as a secure roof over your head, unless you owned that roof - and you could only own it so long as you had a sufficient income and could afford to pay for it. Otherwise, if you fell on hard times, there was no-one who would give a **** about your situation. My mother told me how very difficult it was to secure family housing and that before they finally obtained a council house, there were six of my parents and siblings sleeping in a single room. It is an absolute disgrace that people still have this spectre looming over their heads, in a country as rich as ours.

Good onya mate for bringing this crisis to people's attention bc they can easily end up in the same situation, I was homeless on the streets for 4 yrs 20 years ago when there was plenty of charities that helped you & plenty of empty houses you could hold up in for a few days. The hardest thing for people on the streets is to ask anyone for help bc that's admitting to yourself you're a failure & if you don't get the help you won't ask again bc it takes a lot to ask for help! So help out if you can!

What I would say to people who walk by people who are down on their luck is this, you will never find more genuine down to earth non judgemental people than those who live on the streets because they know they have hit rock bottom and the only way is up. They also know it can and will be anyone of us who could and will end up trading places with them. Always give your fellow man a hand if you can for the same god who made you made him to.

In a similar boat, my business made me around £5k a month. Covid came along and all my customers had their own problems so business died within about 6 months. Am 49 and have never worked in another company so finding a job is a real struggle for peanuts money. Fortunately my wife makes a decent wage but she could get fed up anytime and I could be in Martin’s position quite easily. Councils, government etc don’t give a crap and we all know the disgusting double standards with these people just rocking up in a dinghy and having everything thrown at them. I am not homeless, but have been very close to just quitting. I had savings, had enough money to enjoy going out, shopped weekly, was able to have lighting and heating on in winter, had a motorbike.. Basically I was well off enough t live a life that someone working full time should be able to. Never over spent, lived within my means. 3 years later, I have nothing. When I say nothing, I mean it. All gone. I have one wage coming in, live on my own, after the bills are paid, I have about £300+ for food and if possible go out. Cant afford to put the heating on, light stay off. weekly shopping stopped, I now buy one shop every two weeks, nothing extra, that one weeks shopping has to last me 2 weeks now. I have days when I eat just toast or noodles. Had a pay rise, guess what? ALL of it now goes to the electric company and rent. Both gone up AGAIN. This country is absolutely fucked for a person earning one wage and living on their own. Just got here? Here have loads of free shit. Lived here and worked here ALL my life and for what?

This is extremely hard to read. Everything is crashing down and it is all by design. I’m on support due to severe disabilities and I’m very grateful. I was looking forward to my last few years enjoying some basic comforts like a morning coffee out or a show. Maybe treating a friend to lunch. I didn’t worry about the heating or shopping but now everything has changed. I can’t walk so rely on carers. I need to also spend privately for extra support. Everything is so expensive and getting worse. I have one last burst to try and regain my independence but should it fail I’m going to stop eating and drinking so I can fade and finally get out of this hell. I’m turning 69 this year and have survived cancer, double pneumonia, massive heart attack and Covid where the treatment left me paralysed. You must keep fighting. Wishing you the best, regards from London

Back in the 70s my parents sold up from the home counties and moved to Cornwall. Then you could buy a six bed mansion for the price of a hc 2 bed semi. Cornwall has always been a low wage economy, largely based on seasonal work. There should be a special council tax rate for second homes set at 200-300% above banding. The higher stamp duty doesn’t deter. And there needs to be a clamp down on council tax avoidance by claiming the property is a commercial let which strangely never gets let so avoids tax on profits.
