Definitely build up a "go to hell" fund. That way, if things become unbearable, you can resign and take your time to find something else, all the while having money to pay the bills.

I didn't have to quit my toxic job. 2 years ago I worked at a place where I was constantly targeted and treated unfairly. They where so hell bent on getting rid of me once they realized they couldn't fire me because I know and play the game, they laid 3 people off just so they could lay me off the next week. When that happened I laughed and cheered in their faces, I had to restrain myself from flipping them off. Funny thing they called me in for a one week hitch and I laughed at them.

This is the best time to quit a toxic job now. Today in 2022 alot of companies are desperate for hiring since there is a work shortage since the pandemic started. I just quit mine and found a new one the same day I left. Didn't give no 2 wks notice waste of time and waste of gas since it costed me $50 every week to fill up my gas.

Thank God I quit my job (the first one right after graduating college). Best decision ever. Now I'm a stay at home mom working 24-7 with no vacations and LOVING IT!! My kids are so much fun and I love raising them. So much better than working with a controlling/manipulative boss. My husband is awesome and treats me like a queen and I love home making for him. Love love love it!!

@@marys3738 I did escape! I'm now 1 year into the job I escaped to and I'm really enjoying it. Much kinder atmosphere and satisfying work. It really did show to me how I COULD make a goal happen if I made it the priority, not just an intention, and watching Jennifer Brick helped me to reinforce my desire to keep going, to keep trying. I hope you're doing well, what ever you're goals are xx

I walked out on my shitty toxic hospitality job today and dam it felt good. I got blasted by the head chef over allowing a customer to order a kids meal because she had gastric bypass surgery and cannot consume a lot of food. I had a supervisor approve this at another previous occasion so didn’t think today would be any different. I couldn’t even get a word in when the head chef blasted me in front of other staff It was ludicrous! The supervisor on shift also didn’t intervene and this just made me angry when this was the second time the head chef had reduced me to tears in less than a month with his abusive behaviour. The kids meal costs the same price as side dishes and tapas so the company wasn’t at a financial loss and the customer was happy with my service until I was made to tell her she had to order something else. As a waitress that had been here almost a year I was done with being treated like a number and not a person. I walked up to my supervisor took off my apron and said I’m not going to tolerate that inappropriate and rude behaviour I’m so upset this company allows this to happen to staff so I’m leaving.

As someone that busted out of a toxic company I can relate to point #1. I went back and forth for like a year. But once I made the choice, there was NO going back. I was going to make it happen. And within 5 months - I was gone. Thanks for doing this type of video Jennifer. I think part of the reason I was back and forth is because I didn't have a video like this that mapped it out for me.

I’m leaving a toxic job right now and I almost wavered on my exit plan until I saw this video, especially the “leaving gracefully” part. I felt sick to my stomach waking up today and knowing I have to go in. I wanted to call and tell them to forget the two weeks notice, but I forgot that I wanted to do this out of respect for myself. And also, isn’t the cruelest and most fun way to get back at them to show them your value one last time and eventually leave them begging for you to stay and desperately praising you? I get to leave with no regrets and with my head held high, while they treat me like a queen to try and get me to change my mind. It’s all shallow, and remember that you are better than that. Don’t take part. Thank you for resparking that motivation in me! I know I can make it now! :)

I got a title increase offer after 4 years of the same salary and tons of more responsibilities, when I started off as support. The amount offered was 5%….which barely catches up to inflation not even accounting that this is batching in a TITLE CHANGE. I challenged it, provided research and my accomplishments, and my boss has put off resolving my new title for 2 months now! I’m drafting my resume, and putting together a portfolio.

I am plotting my escape. Exit date is December 2021. I am already in a creative field, but want to be more creative with my work, and more independent. I plan on finishing my degree, full-time, as my first "job" after exiting, and preparing to job hop/freelance after graduating to keep my independence from toxic cultures/people. I want to focus my future career on being creative FOR creatives, instead of using my skills to amplify non-creatives who don't hold the same amount of respect for creativity as I do. Building and maintaining confidence and energy are the big lessons for me right now. I think the toxic environment really took a toll. I started out well, then a new manager came on board and clawed away all the good stuff... it is akin to the "frog being slowly boiled and not jumping out". I am journaling, meditating, and want to start therapy. I admit I do feel pretty broken, but no longer in denial about the toxicity. I want to exit with a no contact two weeks notice. I will give that more thought on being more graceful for my own sake, but I have asked twice to be moved to another team away from the toxic boss, so it isn't like I haven't been forthcoming. I'm still pretty upset, and have some petty fantasies, lol. But it is a small world and could bite me down the road. I am thinking more along the lines of "It doesn't feel like a good fit right now and I want to finish my degree and explore new opportunities"... Besides, I think my exit will be fairly understood, anyway, as I have sought help three times for the toxic relationship. Thanks for the practical, mindful, positive approach to exiting toxic professional environments. It is more actionable step after cathartically watching all the algorithm videos titled "These are all the reasons your boss is a toxic narcissist!"

I started a job a month ago. Eight days in the boss ask if i like the job? I said its been slow I dont know yet. Then two weeks later boss and another once again ask me if i like the job. How they don’t want anyone staying that dont like it. If i left six to eight months in he would be upset. Then two weeks after that im being told that i have no drive. That i dint ask for work my first week and days there. When i was actually learning their systems and the process of the job on my own. Bc they don’t provide training. I was hired and they had no game plan of what work I would learn and clearly no training plan. Then being insulted that i have no drive. When I haven’t even had a chance to prove myself. They have extremely unrealistic expectations. Workers need time to feel comfortable at a job and learn the job. This doesn’t feel like a fit at all. And the bosses even said that their company is a revolving door. That doesn’t even sound like a place to stay in.

You've got this, Tenisha!! Depending on where you are based you may not *have* to give 2 weeks (look up the laws for where you live), you can also negotiate (though you likely won't need paid for days you don't work, obvs).

Why do you have to give any notice if your present company boots people out the door within minutes after they try to give notice? I think just telling your boss on the way out that you've quit should suffice. And because it's a toxic place, if the boss isn't there, just leave. They can always call you to find out where you are and/or what happened. And when they start to fire you over the phone just tell them you quit earlier in the day when you walked out. If they get nasty, just hang up. Thank God I'm retired and don't have to put up with this crap any more. People who think they have "power" can just behave outrageously. It's time to take back control of your own destiny and there is nothing wrong with expecting to be treated decently. Period!

In one job, I got given an unreasonable and unrealistic deadline. A whole team was working on a task for around 2 years or more and got nowhere. I had one day to make progress on a task that went on for like 2 years. I met that deadline but it was a terribly unreasonable deadline and I was very angry about it. Many other experiences (particularly excessive gossip and bad bosses) made me work on my exit strategy and find a new job before resigning from the toxic job

I have been working 19 hours everyday 7:00am - 2:00am but that wasn't the reason of toxic labeling. The most vivid of toxic environment symptom revealed when most of us were humiliated by the leadership when everyone was facing difficult with the clients. The process of explaining the clients complains will be shut down immediately and lectured. When i told my manager that I'm sick after my 2nd dose of covd-19 vaccination, he said, get back to work. I tendered my resignation 3 weeks ago before it is too late, the most concern is my physical and mental health. I'm glad I made that decision. .... :)

I'm plotting my escape! The job sounded great on paper but there is absolutely no structure, was no onboarding, and no direct supervisor or team to report to/ask question to/lean on. The entire team is on me, but I'm a brand new hire who has no idea what I'm doing and they know it. On top of that, I hear different things from different people about what my description actually is and it's incredibly frustrating and overwhelming. I just started 4 months ago and am already so desperate to leave. I also don't get paid enough to cover my bills! So that's all the more reason. I have an interview tomorrow for something that pays better and is more cut and dry so I'm really excited for that. :-)

I actually took a step backwards into a previous job so I had a safe place to rebuild my confidence. I took a massive pay cut but my sanity is worth more than the financial gain of staying in a toxic workplace.

Don't know about recruiters - the best companies can pick and choose applicants because they're overwhelmed with applications - what's left is companies that can't find applicants. My current employer explicitly says we treat every application through a recruiter like a direct application because we don't want recruiters. They're probably good for finding a job, but not necessarily the dream job

Companies with great reputations definitely have a leg up when it comes to recruiting. The best way to get in those companies is to build relationships within so you can get referred!

My last exit was very sad. My boss really was too toxic and took a toll. I was a middle manager. But what hurt most is that i was close and loved my subordinates . It felt liked betraying them…but with enough reflection, it was the right decision. A year after, we’re still in good terms and never shamed me for leaving.

I'm plotting my escape! I have submitted applications for the past few months to get out of here. I've been here for 2 long years and hate it here. I often go home crying and am made to work overtime often even if I notify them I cannot that day. I'm so ready to leave and hope that something comes up soon that truly works with my strengths.
