The classical elements in metal (and especially all of the folk in SOAD) plus it's a naturally distorted instrument that can also make drone sounds. The drone may not seem important, but it's actually a huge part of folk music since it often grounds the melody - kind of like a bass does for a guitar in a typical rock band.

This is cool. I love how different instruments can still fucking kill a solid metal riff. Though it is weird how others completely fall flat. Harp and piano just can't seem to make it happen but the Cello and hurdy gurdy have it down. Keep up the awesome work!
