River Retreat GARAKU (リバーリトリート雅楽倶) is a famous river retreat onsen hotel in Toyama. It is located south of Toyama city, accessible by car. If you take the train to Sasazu JR train station, they will pick you up in a Bentley! The retreat rests by Jinzu river. The owner is an art collector, so there are modern art pieces all around the hotel, which is designed by famed architect Naito Hiroshi. Each room is unique. I recommend upgrading to nice rooms. There are only 25 rooms. You have a choice of two restaurants, the Japanese or the French. The French won a Michelin star in 2016 (The chef has since gone independent running his own restaurant called L'Evo). The dishes are simply stunning, and indescribable. One wonders what such an elegant 5-star establishment is doing out in the countryside of Toyama. Get here early so that you can enjoy the many nooks and crannies around the hotel, especially before it gets dark. You are welcome to bathe in your room's private onsen, or the communal onsen or western spa (the latter is limited times so check availability).@TastyWaterOM @TravelWhiskers
