Did our video help you? If so, consider buying us a beer: bit.ly/3feE6tJ
In this video, we show you how to perform a Valve Cover Gasket Job on the Toyota 2RZ-FE 2.4L 4 Cylinder Engine. In addition, we show you the process we went through to diagnose and fix a misfire problem on this engine and we show you how to perform a compression test of the cylinders.
We also performed a valve lash adjustment, but this process was not filmed since we already have a video in existence doing it on a 3RZ-FE engine which would be the same for the 2RZ-FE engine. Here's a link to that video: • Toyota 3RZ-FE Valve Ad...

Another great video! I love to hear of Toyotas with an obscene amount of miles on them. Really, the maintenance you performed here was pretty routine. Especially for the high mileage. Happy holidays to you and Sean.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 6 месяцев назад
Yeah, definitely routine maintenance for sure. I think doing a valve lash adjustments gets overlooked a lot though. A decent percentage of shops don't even want to do them because of how time intensive and tedious they are to do. It took me a long time to adjust 11 out of the 16 valves. But, keeping the valves in adjustment can prevent expensive repairs like having to pull the head off to replace valves that got a hole burnt into them.

When you do coil packs and sparkplugs replace them all. Not one at a time. You're just setting yourself up for the same job multiple more times.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman Месяц назад
Spark plugs are a wear item that should be replaced for engine maintenance. Coil packs are items that are only replaced when they fail. If you replace them "just because they are old," you're throwing money away. If the coil packs were an item that were hard to access, then your methodology would make some sense. OEM coil packs are expensive.

ChatGPT My spark plugs have been newly changed, and the valve cover gasket has also been replaced. After a long ride, there is a misfire, and the mechanic said two ignition coils are broken. However, when I tried to change them, I found a little oil in the spark plug and on the ignition coils. What should I do? Could it be that my ignition coils are not actually broken?
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 14 дней назад
That is a possibility. Just a little oil usually doesn't affect the coil packs though. It's usually when the tip is submerged in engine oil that it causes issues.

Whoever told you that the 2.7 liter 3RZ-FE engine "has a bigger bore/piston" vs the 2.4 liter 2RZ-FE engine, is incorrect. Both engines share the same bore/piston size of 3.74". The difference is: the 2RZ-FE has a shorter stroke at 3.39".......vs the 3RZ-FE which has a longer stroke of 3.74", making the 3RZ-FE a square engine........while the 2RZ-FE has the same bore of 3.74", but with the shorter stroke of 3.39", which makes it an over-squared engine. Think of the 3RZ-FE engine as "the stroker version of the 2RZ-FE engine". Because of the longer stroke, the 3RZ-FE is the only engine of the 2 that has a pair of counter-rotating balance shafts in the block, while the 2RZ-FE does not have the balance shafts. When replacing the timing chain, gears, and related components in the 3RZ, it is highly recommended to replace the chain & gears that drive the balance shafts, as well as the front balance shaft bearings, and the new parts for the balance shafts I just mentioned are quite costly. In higher mileage 3RZ engines, if the front balance shaft bearings are not eventually replaced, the old bearings can wear completely through, which then causes the balance shafts to rub/rotate directly against the bearing bores in the front of the block, and will render the engine block totally useless. ( There is NO way to re-machine these front balance shaft bearing bores in the block. The block is now junk. ) This is why many if not most 3RZ-FE owners remove the balance shafts & all related parts. When I had my 3RZ totally rebuilt, I had the balance shafts & all related components totally removed to totally alleviate this issue. Also: the balance shafts, gears, and chain cause a fair amount of parasitic loss to the power of the engine. Once removed, the engine has better throttle response. ( There's an oil galley on the front of the block that MUST be VERY CAREFULLY drilled, tapped, and plugged when removing the balance shafts permanently. The balance shaft bearings must also be rotated 180 degrees then re-installed, in order to block off those oil galleys, or better yet, buy the $100 balance shaft removal kit from LC Engineering that includes 2 new "dummy bearings" to replace the original balance shaft bearings, plus this kit has a really trick, custom oiling jet made by LC Engineering that will spray oil only on the timing chain & gear, so you're not wasting oil pressure by spraying oil where it is no longer needed. This kit has everything ya need to remove the balance shaft system. )
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 6 месяцев назад
Wow! Thanks for sharing all that information. My buddy Jordan recently talked to me about deleting the balance shafts in his 3RZ.
@howabouthetruth2157
@howabouthetruth2157 6 месяцев назад
You know I was thinking about your friend Jordan and his 3RZ, and that's why I decided to add all of that information about the dangers ( to a fine engine ) of extensive balance shaft bearing wear. Because when it's too late, IT'S TOO LATE!!! Seems like somebody could at least come up with a way of fixing the 3RZ block if the balance shaft scrubbed it's bearing bores, but evidently not. Timing chain, gears, guides, etc are reasonably priced for this engine ( LC Engineering sells the best kit in the industry ), but man, to buy the chain, gears, bearings, etc for the balance shafts is quite pricey!!! LC Engineering's kit for deleting the balance shafts comes with literally everything you need: the dummy bearings, a nifty bearing removal & installation tool, the correct drill bit, tap, and plumbing style threaded plug for plugging off the oil galley on the front of the block, a and of course the really cool custom oil jet I mentioned earlier, and they even provide 2 new special bolts for installing this oil jet. The only thing you supply is a drill, a T-handle wrench, and some loctite. LCE has a youtube channel, and a really good instructional video on how to perform this operation using their kit. This kit is so good ( for only $100 ), that I see other Toyota specialty websites selling it. And they even state that it's the very kit produced by LCE. Be VERY careful when drilling & tapping that front oil galley. ( It's the only one that needs this procedure. ) Use vaseline on the drill bit and tap, and go slow, while backing out often to collect the metal shavings. Ya don't want to get any of those metal shavings into the oil passages of the block. When the job is done, it's SO gratifying to know that you'll never have to worry about those pesky balance shaft bearings again ( let alone the costly replacement parts. ) I haven't noticed any real "added vibration" while driving. Even the rear & side view mirrors are steady as a rock while idling at a red light. Seat of the pants throttle response is much improved as well. I hate to see anyone lose such a precious engine over these damned balance shaft bearings. ( Ya leave the rear balance shafts bearings in the block, they are designed differently and pose no threat. Nor do they require any plugging of oil galleys. This is coming straight from the engineers & techs at LC Engineering. )@@TimmyTheToolman

Maybe this engine never came with an EGR. I doubt the original owner of the truck deleted it, but maybe he did. The truck has been in California it's whole life and the smog laws here aren't exactly lenient.

Is the owner the original owner? Also, seeing as California is the most strict about clean emissions, I would think that an EGR on any engine from this time period ( new engines with VVT don't require an EGR system ) would be the law there. ???????? @@TimmyTheToolman

Hey Russ, it's great to know you enjoy our videos. We don't have a video for replacing CV axles on a 1st Gen Tundra, but the video we made 7 years ago replacing CV axles on a 3rd Gen 4runner would suffice. From my recent work on a 1st Gen Tundra doing a suspension upgrade to it, the steering knuckles look to be identical to the knuckles on a 3rd Gen 4runner or 1st Gen Tacoma. So you could use the video I linked to understand how to do it. Just disregard the whole rebooting and boot stretch mod part of it if you're not going to be rebooting your axles.
