I don’t comment on many things, but this was a great, clean well produced instructional video. I also appreciated the fact that you went and drove the car after and filmed your initial reaction. Great job and thanks for the info.
Thanks for the vid. I have a 2021 TRD Pro in MGM just like yours. Just got my Pedal Commander yesterday. Installing it tomorrow. Great instructions and suggestions. Thanks for recording your vid with excellent audio! Looks like I gotta get those headlights too! Dang! Thanks again!
Awesome! Love MGM, clearly lol! 🙌 Hope install goes smoothly for ya - I’m sure it will. It’s a piece of cake! Thank you for your kind words. Appreciate you watching and commenting!
Thank you very much for this straight forward and honest video report. Been looking for an inexpensive way to improve performance. I've already installed a cold air intake. That helped a little. Appreciate the clarity in showing the hook up and your opinion of the noticed positive performance. Just placed my order for my 2021 4Runner!
Great video! Have a 22 4Runner sitting at port and everyone and their mother in the 4Runner world talks about the lag so this is a great review to see for an easy install to help with that. Definitely ordering and want to experience the difference for myself, cheers!
Thank you so much for your super kind words! Congrats on the new rig!! When you’re ready, you can grab your Pedal Commander here: trailgridpro.com/shop/performance/pedal-commander-10/
This is for anybody who is skeptical. I was extremely skeptical of this product but the second you plug this in and go you feel the difference. The sport plus mode kicks butt. No joke amazing product.
@@abc32119 I don’t, but watch this video - this is from Westcott and it talks all about it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tXLurMz7wG0.html
I received my pedal commander today and this gadget works well. It's a 10 stars gadget. I'm very please with the gadget. It works well with my borla type S exhaust and trd intake set up in my 2015 4runner.
Now this is a good video explaining the Pedal Commander. People with Challengers like to make it sound like it adds horsepower, which it doesn’t. Just increases throttle response
Update since my comment 1 year ago. I installed one on my 2022 TRD ORP and it is fantastic. Made all the difference in the world. I did not mount the control module, but instead tucked it behind the kick panel and use the app on my iPhone to make any changes. I settled on the Sport-0 setting, at this setting it has the same response as my 2020 Land Cruiser for the most part.
Awesome install instructions and review. Made it look easy and it seems like a great addition to my build. I just picked one up through your website. Thanks.
@@TrailGridPro no problem. So from your experience so far, is there any particular setting that you’d consider a ‘sweet spot’ for your day to day driving?
@@twintips420 Absolutely. I don’t move much out of City +1 unless I’m on a long trip on the highway and I’ll through it in Economy mode if I’m not in a hurry.
Damn thats a clean build, I need add those taillights! Just added a video of the 21 pro while offroading. Pedal Commander is my next upgrade. Nice video!
Thanks, man! Really appreciate it! I just watched your first impressions vid when you mentioned the stock throttle response, lol. Yup, PC takes care of that! I’ll watch your newest vid next! Think very carefully! Granted, I haven't tried the pedal Commander yet, but when I bought my 4Runner I really wanted to love it, and thought I would get used to it. It's been the opposite, the longer I've owned it, the longer the drivetrain and the lag annoys me.
I’m glad I bought this, will be delivered this Wednesday. The 4runner lag and gear hunting has bothered me for the last 5 yrs that I’ve owned it. Toyota should’ve fixed that in 2014 when they did the facelift. 🙄 The only time you would want the lag is when you’re making technical moves, offroading. Update: installed today and it’s glorious. I’m not even after super sensitivity… just enough to take the lag out like city 0 or -1. Perfection
Thanks so much! The tails are the Eagle Eye Smoked Tails that I grabbed on eBay. I’m about to swap them for these though: trailgridpro.com/shop/lighting/morimoto-tails-10-4runner/
We just got a 2017 4runner that had one of these in it. No instruction but figured it out. I put on highest setting let wife drive it she said "it feels like a v8 now"
Great Video. Very well done. And no annoying background music! Also, Are you Gerald Butler's stunt double???? :) Just installed mine. Drove it around the block and man what a difference. Once you get above 3k RPM no real difference. But, from idle to 3k a totally different vehicle. So nice! I'll know more in a couple days. Going on a 1k mile trip.
So after 1k+ miles. I notice it doesn't downshift near as often to get around vehicles on the road if you roll a light foot. It stays in high gear on the highway at certain speeds better too. It is more snappy in throttle response making me actually like driving it now. Before it felt like a Rider truck in throttle response in comparison. A little more about highway speeds driving: I have speed limits of 80 in some spots. Around a decent over run 5-10 it stays in high gear much better. Especially up small inclines. Once you get over 2500 RPM in high gear it runs much better on the highway. Whereas before it would downshift with a little throttle, you can actually roll into it a little and go around vehicles or up small inclines without the typical downshift. Around town is amazing difference. It is much more snappy off the line. I don't have to rev it up as much to get going. Light throttle and shifting around 2500-3000 rpm feels like a night and day difference in the vehicle. Even if I put around with 2000 rpm shifts it is snappy. Fuel mileage has suffered. I don't have any real numbers as I'm not concerned. I couldn't care as the driving experience is that much better for me. I can still get good mileage if I stay out of it more. But, I don't drive it like a PRIUS.
Great review Cliff and your 4Runner looks awesome! I’m thinking about getting the same color metallic grey in a Trd Pro and same set up as yours! . I was looking at the black color but I’ve been there and done that color many times in the past with my vehicles. Black is so hard to keep clean and not very forgiving when it comes to swirl marks and scratches.
So, true story .. I wanted black but couldn’t find it ... and now I’m so glad I didn’t, lol! I really like the MGM and I have scratches my limbs and branches and you can barely see them, which is great! I’d definitely go with the MGM if I were you! Thanks for watching!
What did you end up getting? Personally, I think black is the worst color, for the issues of keeping it clean and scratch free mentioned it. I also think it doesn't look great on 4Runners, these have interesting lines and the black kind of hides them. I think the MGM is one of the best colors on these. Mine is silver, I bought it used so I didn't have much choice. The nice thing about the silver is that it hardly shows anything. I think that with the Pro, wouldn't you want to get the exclusive color though? It seems like for resale, the Pros that are the exclusive colors seem to have the highest prices.
@@trailrunnah8886 Well, funny story like Cliffs! I couldn’t find a magnetic grey metallic color 2021 Trd Pro in my area and ended going with a black 2021 again back in November 2020. 😂 As you know the Trd Pro’s 2021 are hard to find as many are already pre purchased and I was at my local dealer here in Texas and they happened to have a black one they just got in no one had pre purchased as of yet. I’m really enjoying it and love it very much in spite of its color. I will probably have a paint correction ceramic coating done to it very soon to help wit the black paint. Thanks for the follow up question and hope you are still enjoying yours my friend. By the way, have you done any mods to yours yet? I haven’t done any to mine but want to do the Westcott Designs lift like Cliff’s very soon so as to level it out and put bigger tires on. 😀
@@jasonritchey8610 Congrats on finding one, even if it wasn't your first choice in color. Don't get me wrong, a shined up black vehicle look sharp. Luckily you're in Texas, so far as I know you don't have too much bad weather there. Where I live in New England, it rains all the time so as soon as you wash your black vehicle, it's guaranteed to be dirty the next day. When I was a kid I had a black Trans Am, and I would wash that car three times a week and it'still always looked dirty haha. I've had mine 2 years this week, (it's a 2013 Trail Edition that I bought used) and I haven't really done a ton of mods. Over the last two years I've just changed all the fluids, regular maintenance, and cleaned up the frame, because New England, and I've added RSG Rock sliders, and RCI skid plates. I had this vision that I was going to off road and overlanding with it, but that's yet to happen haha. I also just put a set of General Grabber ATX tires on, in the stock size since I haven't lifted it yet. I'm on the fence about lifting it, since I don't think I want to go any bigger with tires. Even going from the stock Highway terrain tires to these all-terrains, Ive had a solid 2MPG drop in fuel economy, and the vehicle just feels more sluggish as well. It feels underpowered even with stock size tires on it, I can't imagine putting bigger and heavier tires on it. The fact that some people are running 33s or 34s and say the stock gearing is fine boggles my mind. I feel like mine starts to struggle when it even looks at a hill, never mind if I lived in the mountains. (I realize I added some weight with the sliders and skids, but no more than having two full-size passengers I'm bored, which is not something out of the realm of everyday use) I'm really frustrated with the drivetrain in this thing, I'm going back and forth and whether I want to sell it or not. I really like the vehicle, I just get really aggravated with the constant downshifting and how loud the engine is. I don't like the sound of it at all, I'm a V8 guy and this 4.0 just sounds like it's in pain all the time. I don't really care about the 0 to 60 time, I think the HP is fine and it does move when you really flog it. I think the problem with this is that is geared too low and it makes torque way too high in the RPM range. I would just like it to be able to maintain speed on a grade without needing to downshift 2 or 3 gears. At this point I don't even try to finesse it, if I'm on the highway and hit a decent hill I just put it to the floor till I get 10 over the speed limit and then I let off. I've never owned a vehicle that required such aggressiveness with the throttle. My last car was a turbo 2.5L 5 cylinder Volvo, and that thing was a torque monster compared to the 4.0. Okay, enough bitching LOL. Good luck with yours! Overall they're fantastic Vehicles, they just need a drivetrain upgrade.
very good review, will be buying a pedal commander for my 2019 blazer. ever since I went with A/T tires it feels slightly lazier at the throttle and sport mode on the blazer alone is nothing impressive so this should give me the take off I'm looking for.
Great vid - thx! I've had Hikeit throttle controller for quite some time on my Silverado and love it, so now want to put on my wifes 4Runner. I wanted to see how you got to the plug cause its so far up there, could barely see it. Thx BTW - you might also explain its more than just eliminating delay, it changes the whole throttle profile. For instance, stock throttle using "throttle-by-wire applying maybe 25% throttle application at the pedal, might only get you 10% at the engine, unlike the old days of mechanical linkage. Each setting modifies that profile, where sport+ might give you 75% at the engine with only 50% at the pedal. Its an awesome fix. I plan on installing it when wife is out of town - she loves the car except for the throttle. Thx again for posting this.
Thank you for your kind feedback! I typically stay in City +1 in all conditions unless I’m on a long trip and want to save MPG’s and then I’ll go in to Economy.
Great review! I like the ease of installation with this thing. Great point about safety, I have a uphill on ramp to merge onto a normally busy highway on the way home from work, every day I approach it with trepidation because I know I can't get up and out of the way quickly. I have a specific question about the performance of this thing though. I think my 4Runner is fine around town under 40 mph. The big issue I have with it is its performance on anything resembling a grade. As soon as I hit any grade it loses speed, and more pressure on the accelerator pedal simply produces a downshift and more noise. Press it harder, another downshift, then it will start to accelerate up the hill. I find this incredibly frustrating and annoying, to the point that I'm pretty much ready to put this thing up for sale and move on to something with a real engine. However, I do like everything else about it, so I would like to be able to keep it. So, after installing this, does it let you dig into the throttle a little bit more before downshifting? I feel like the way it's programmed stock, the accelerator pedal is basically just a controller for the transmission. Maybe if the engine wasn't so loud and thrashy it wouldn't bother me as much, but as it is now whenever it downshifts it just grates on me down to my last nerve. Thanks for any info!
Thanks so much for your awesome feedback! Much appreciated! So, the short answer to your question is definitely “yes!” I live in a very hilly part of Maryland and have to navigate steep inclines do go various places on the highway and this definitely helps you make the trek uphill faster. In the review I mentioned that it almost seems as if it goes through gears, downshifts, etc. faster - basically everything happens faster, so I think you’ll find it will alleviate your issues - and the good news is if it doesn’t you have 60-days to return it, no questions asked ... so you don’t have much to lose: trailgridpro.com/pedal-commander-shop/
@@TrailGridPro thank you for the quick reply! Also great info, that's exactly what I needed to know. I remember you saying it goes through the gears better, but didn't know how it behaved on grades. Also didn't know that there was a 60-day money-back guarantee, so looks like it's definitely worth a try! I saw your link with the code, so I will definitely purchase through you when I'm ready.
Just purchased from TGP on their 4th of July sale. thank you cliff. you guys do some amazing things and all your videos are great. Sport+ @2 for me. just need to understand you have to feather that pedal. no more need to stomp on it from a stop light.
Man what a beautiful 4runner. My question may seem like a dumb one,and I could probably have my answer through a little minor research, but I'm tired today lol. But will this work on a 2019 TRD Off Road w/key ignition?
I loved my pedal commander in my 2018 4Runner TRD-Offroad. It was installed for about two years when all of the sudden one day I was getting an error code P2121 which is an accelerator pedal position error. Removed the PC from my 4Runner and the code went away. I ran it in city mode most of the time. After removal, I noticed my MPG average went up almost 1.5MPG.
Thanks for sharing your experience with the Pedal Commander! I've been running the Pedal Commander in my 4Runner for 4 years and so far so good! Love it! The reason your MPG's went up is because City mode is a faster throttle response than your factory position so that's why your MPG's went up. Makes sense!
Hey thank for all the information you gave. I was hoping that I could get your feedback on eco mode. Have you done a test to see if gas mileage has increased driving in eco?
It’s absolutely our pleasure! I know … I totally forgot to add a part about Eco mode! Well, I’ve had the Pedal Commander in my rig for about 2 years now and on average ECO mode gives me an extra 2 to 4 MPGs depending on driving conditions.
I've had the pedal commander on my 2007 Tundra SR5 for three years and I use it every day. It's the most innovative product I've ever seen and used. In LA traffic I put mine on extreme mode plus 5 and it's absolutely awesome! Instantaneous acceleration and response that I would have never known possible. The two lower modes I apply as I feel appropriate and I switch between modes throughout the day to make for a better, safer, and more enjoyable driving experience. Don't use the sport mode around town unless you're going to race like some irresponsible adolescent... But if you do, here's how you do it.. lol. Seriously.. it will cause surging and it's not good. Return to factory mode when in slow traffic and parking lots, and if you drop your truck off for service!... Embarrassing. I highly recommend this product.
This video is awesome! However the step at 4:20 - mine will not come off. Two folks have tried to make sure I’m not crazy. Did they crazy glue it in there? Update: we finally got it w a Philips screw driver. Whew! Thank you again! I am loving this device!
Thx for taking time to show this. I have some questions - I am comparing TRD Pro to a Jeep Rubicon to decide what to buy. What is the impact on fuel economy in the different modes? Have you done any measurements? If not, will you do so and then update? What does Econ mode do for performance - does that increase mpg or ... ? Is the exhaust sound that I hear on your audio normal - bec it seems loud and prolly annoying after a while - to me. Is there an exhaust drone when you drive at steady speed on freeway - and can you opine on the noise - ie, does it bother you ?
Thanks for watching! Really appreciate it! So, I haven’t noticed any decrease in MPG in City, Sport or Sport+ and have noticed about 2 MPG increase while in Economy. Econ mode provides an even slower throttle response than stock and basically doesn’t let you gun it at all. Really great to conserve gas. The TRD Pro has an upgraded exhaust system which provides the more throaty sound. I actually love it and any time I actually notice it anymore, I enjoy hearing it. I have zero experience with a Rubicon but I can absolutely tell you I love everything about my TRD Pro 4Runner. Thanks again and let me know if I can help with anything else!
What did you get? Just curious, I don't hear a lot of people comparing the two vehicles. Usually people are Jeep people, or Toyota people, LOL. Not including me, I bought the 4Runner because I thought it'd be better daily driver, though I'd rather have the Rubicon LOL.
@@trailrunnah8886 Howdy - I bought 4Runner TRD Premium Venture Edition [cosmetic changes] with KDSS instead of TRD PRO. I think Kdss is better overall on and off road. And it definitely drives better than Jeep - which seemed to small for me too. $runner is great daily driver - way better than Rubicon - but of course the Rubicon 4-door looks the best stock - no doubt - but like I said a bit small inside dimensions.
Hey bro, thanks for the review. Do you know if installing this voids the warranty at all? I have a 12 year 125k on mine and don't want to drop the ball by doing anything that can void it.
According to Pedal Commander, it doesn’t void the warranty since it doesn’t cut any factory wires but I’d talk to your warranty company/dealer to be sure.
I got a PC for my new 2023 Off-road premier and will install it soon. Your video was very helpful in deciding on the location, cable routing and settings. What I can't understand is why the cold-air intake isn't available for the '23 yet! I know I could buy an earlier one, but don't want to screw with my warrantees. I gather it will be "approved" soon. Any ideas?
@@TrailGridPro Before I installed the P.C., I watched a few more reviews from people after using the P.C. for a while, I decided to get the PedalMonster, which requires a connection to the OBD port also. The issue that got me was the acceleration of being in reverse, which is disabled by the P.M. Refund already processed, and the P.M. is a little cheaper. Maybe you can do a review of that one also. As for the intake, I trust that it will be "supported" for the '23 4runner pretty soon. No reason it shouldn't be.

@@TrailGridPro so check this out..haha I bought both pedal commander and sprint booster. Since these no 2021 4runners with this on them..So ima do one month each, see what’s better...Or what gives me better MPG.
Cliff, a couple of questions: since the install, have you experienced any issues with the drivetrain, transmission, or other components? Does this piece of equipment voids the warranty? The reason I ask is because I just got my 4R and considering installing this piece. Not sure if it’s a good idea for a new vehicle. Thanks
Great questions! I’ve had it installed for a year and a half with no issues. Pedal Commander states their product does not void the warranty due to the fact that it doesn’t cut any factory wiring.
Just ordered a Pedal Commander tonight for my 2018 TRD OFF-ROAD PREMIER. Good review 😎🤙. I have a question on your roof rack/basket. I purchased a set of T-bars shaped like a aircraft wings thinking they would be quite! They were not and whistled loud with moon roof open and I could still hear it when closed! I'm in the process of returning them. I have the same setup as you with a moon roof so I only want the short rack like yours. I know yours came factory being a TRD PRO. My rig looks alot like yours except mine is black with green led Raptor lights I custom made w 2 lime green D rings under front and the lime green trailer hitch D ring in the rear. I got 4 of the green lights so I centered 3 across the top of the center grill bar saying Toyota and put the 4th under that bar in the center toward top. I have never seen any with green led lights and it matches my lime green D rings.I have had a lot people tell me they love the green! I got off track a little LOL! Your roof rack! 😅 how is it with wind noise? Does it make any noise that you notice? I just have the two raised bars that go from front to rear on each side without any cross bars. I have seen the rack you have with a wind guard on it that says Baja stamped on it . Your rack would be perfect for the look and the few times I would need it. I'm in Michigan and we deer & bear hunt so it would work nice to toss anything we got up there! Thanks Greg G 😎🤙
So, the roof rack in the video is the factory TRD Pro roof rack and it doesn't make any noise at all. We've since replaced that rack for the Gobi Stealth rack and love it!
Has anybody gotten issues with the pedal commander? I keep getting engine light and trac off lights go off after running for a couple days. The unit was a take off from a 17'TRD pro to a now 2021 TRD pro. Had issues with the first unit on the 17’ but pedal commander fixed it under warranty. It is now out of warranty and pedal commander won’t help.
Good afternoon Beard brother. After a few months, would you still recommend the pedal commander? Have you had any issues with it? Has your MPG changed? Great review, by the way. A suggestion, cut out the music a bit. Again, great video.

Which state you in? I been thinking about those morimoto headlights but haven’t justified it yet haha. I went with the LASFIT hid’s and they are great! Plenty of throw!
We’re in Maryland. The Morimoto’s are pretty sweet, but you’re right - they are a little heavy on the wallet. But I’ll tell you I have zero regrets buying and putting them on, lol. I love them!
@@TrailGridPro yea they look great and the daytime running lights look awesome too. Cool where in Vegas. I did the westcott kit upfront also, and did 2” icon springs in rear.
Good video thank you. Question... does this void warranty? Any thoughts on any benefits with gas mileage? Does it ONLY help with pedal acceleration? Thx in advance looking to get my21 soon...
According to Pedal Commanders site it doesn’t void the warranty because it doesn’t cut any factory wires. From my experience with plug and play upgrades, that makes sense. In the video I completely forgot to mention ECO mode, but I’ve been using it a lot since and it definitely saves MPG’s. Most likely a mile or two per gallon. All other modes (city, sport and sport plus) help with acceleration. Thanks for watching!!
Just a quick question, does you lift in any way negatively affect you adaptive cruise control or collision avoidance monitor? I have a 2020 also and I’m just wondering.
Nope, doesn’t affect it negatively at all! My avoidance monitor is triggered more often than I’d like it to, so I know it works well, lol. I don’t use the adaptive cruise but as far as I know it’s all good.
Is that a car seat in the back? If so, how is the clearance with a passenger in the front seat? My wife and I are considering a 5th gen for more room with our newborn. Thanks for the review on the Pedal Commander as well! Sub’d!
Thanks for commenting and subscribing!! I’ve had the 4Runner since my daughter was about 1 year old and it’s been great. It’s super easy to get her in and out due to the height of the vehicle and there’s so much more room than a car or smaller SUV. Definitely recommend it! If I didn’t answer your question fully let me know - I’m happy to help in anyway!
@@TrailGridPro Thanks for your reply! One other question: if you had to put a second car seat behind the driver’s seat, would you still be in a comfortable driving position?
Great question! I’ve been running the Pedal Commander for 7 months and my check engine light has never come on. Let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks!
Thanks so much for watching! According to Pedal Commanders site, since it doesn’t cut any factory wires the warranty is not affected.
