The 2021 Toyota Camry range is different. Not that different to look at, sure - but the V6 model has been dropped, and instead there's just one petrol-only offering while the rest of the range is petrol-electric hybrid now.
There have been interior and exterior styling adjustments, with a subtle update to the bumper/grille and revised larger media screens inside. But the secret to the Camry's success in Australia has always been the wide availability of hybird powertrains, and its pricing means it's truly an affordable option for everyone - including Uber drivers.
About 70 per cent of customers went for the hybrid, in the pre-facelift model, which also had a V6 top-spec model. Now it's a more hybrid-heavy approach, we expect that percentage to jump even higher. It's a unique selling point against the VW Passat, Skoda Octavia and Skoda Superb, Mazda 6 and Hyundai Sonata, none of which have hybrid power in Australia.
Considering a new Camry? Make sure you check out our detailed review - you'll find the link below.

I would easily pick an SX Hybrid for my next car. I currently own a 2012 Camry Hybrid with nearly 400,000km on it. Aside from tyres all I have had to replace are wiper blades and headlight globes. The brakes are the originals from Toyota after all those kms!! All in all an extremely reliable car that is both comfortable and inexpensive to run.

Thanks Richard, I've been looking at buying an SX and your comments here are appreciated. And I was bragging about the 150 000 from my original brakes on my city car, well done. I'm still concerned that the cost of PULP petrol will undermine any savings I might get over and above my unleaded car which is a Mitsy Lancer 2.4 that goes like a rocket.

Between my wife and myself we've owned 3 Toyotas two of which have been Hybrids and we simply wouldn't own any other car. We have friends who own VW's and the common complaint with these cars is as the advertisement goes "VW drivers expect more" because if you want even the the basic things which most people expect such as reversing cameras, you have to pay for it. No other car comes close to a Toyota hybrid for their drive train. Amazing cars

We love our 2019 Hybrid Camry, the hybrid system deletes all of the issues I hate about a standard petrol auto. No lag on takeoff or changing gears, the electric motor has an instant response so feels seamless and effortless. The fuel mileage is incredible for the size of the vehicle, first tank went 900kms to 46.7lts (50%hwy50%town) my next tank will be a little less being all town I'll expect at least 700+kms. Toyota may of been better off renaming it something other than Camry, as the name in the past labels Plain Jane boring but reliable cars. This new Camry is way a head of the old Camry in styling and level of quality driving with the Toyota reliability. We would of liked an SUV for the ride and access height but could not justify the extra $10k-$15k to get a hybrid Toyota SUV.

I own a Ascent Hybrid. It is an excellent vehicle, although sometimes I wish I had opted for the Sport version. The only reason for that is the driver's seat in the sport has electric adjustments. I am tall, my wife is shorter so the seat height has to be manually adjusted up/down with each driver change (21st century problems). The driving experience is excellent, throttle response is telepathic, it eats kilometers comfortably. Our average fuel economy for mainly urban driving is 5.3 litres/100 km. Highway driving continually achieves 4.5-4.8/100 (I have achieced 3.0/100km several times). That provides a realistic 950 - 1000km/50litre tank, enough to ride the infurating petrol price cycles. Truely impressive. Generally this is a car that does what it says on the box. Now the SX model is available as a Hybrid, I would definately go for that option.

John, actually Toyota’s price on this is not too bad. But have a look at the new small Toyota Yaris! It is TRULY a rip-off! The base 1.5 litre, 3-cylinder, with manual transmission is $25,000 !!!!!! Holy f**k !!! For a pissy little sub-compact !!! The old one was only $18,000 last year. $7,000 increase IN ONE YEAR! That’s what I CALL OUT OF CONTROL!!!

The biggest issue is that TOYOTA, in Australia, has insisted both Petrol & Hybrid versions use 95RON fuel from 2021 (used to be just Hybrid) - 14% more expensive than 91. But USA models only need US 87 which=91 RON. And RAV4, same engine supposedly, only 91. Maybe TOYOTA doesn't want to sell any? Doesn't make sense.

CarsGuide ... why would anyone pay 20cents a litre more for no good reason and like has been mentioned the RAV4 with the same Dynamic force motor petrol and hybrid use 91ron and the Corolla 2 litre Dynamic force as well designed to run on 91ron... be a deal breaker for quite a few that is if they where advised of it before purchase.. the local dealer was not aware of it insisting it ran on unleaded not premium until I showed what is written on the fuel lid.

Oh yeah, the Peugeot will get you plenty excited… I drove a 508 rental 2020 model on the highway with lane keep assist and because the marking were not properly done the car tried to kill me by steering to the right harshly at 80km/h … If I hadn’t reacted quickly by steering back into my lane with the wheels squealing I would have hit a wall. Not to mention the poor reliability of Peugoet and their stupid electric systems. I’ll always take any Toyota over any Peugoet.

The thing that would stop me buying one is that HORRIBLE CVT. No matter what car they are in they drive horribly.Why wouldn't they put the 8spd in it?
@Nicholas.T
@Nicholas.T 3 года назад
Actually Greg, it’s not a regular “rubber band” CVT, if I can call them that! It’s actually what Toyota call an e-CVT, and they ARE quite different! It’s somewhat difficult to explain the technical operation. Have a look at - “Understanding the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid” on the “WeberAuto” channel on RU-vid, for a brilliant explanation! It describes the RAV4 hybrid system, and the Camry one is essentially identical. It will explain why they can’t use a conventional 8spd auto. I’ve driven one and it’s nowhere near as bad as a conventional CVT!! There is a little of that CVT flairing under acceleration at highway speeds, but it’s not too bad. And that’s more than compensated by the ultra quiet, terrific, smooth acceleration of the electric motor from standstill to about 30-35 km/hr, when the petrol engine SEAMLESSLY kicks in!! All in all, Toyota’s hybrid system is really brilliantly designed, and certainly delivers on the fuel economy front I achieved 5.8 litres/100kms in a RAV4 2WD recently, on a 1,800 km road trip, in all sorts of mixed driving, without particularly sparing the right foot! Truly outstanding economy!

95 RON petrol required on a Camry is dissapointing - I was about to buy one until I read this 95 RON issue - 95 RON = $1.55 per litre, 91RON = $1.42 per litre, which means 95 RON is 13c per litre more $0.13 x 70 ltrs (per fill) = about $9 extra per tank fill or about $473 extra per year (52 fills). Or look at it another way, it brings your average fuel rating up from 5 ltrs / 100 klms to 5.45 litres / 100 klms - nibbling away at the reasons for buying a hybrid with all of its other detractions (CVT gearbox, funny electric motor & brake regeneration whiny noises, growly Atkinson motor on acceleration, extra engine oil usage issues(needs regular topping up because of oil ring designs), engine re-starting when electric motor not enough power)
