Celica Supra - Fast Blast Review - Everyday Driver
This classic 80s Supra is from the era when the Supra was a 6 cylinder variation of Toyota’s Celica. This car turned 33 years old around the time of our shoot, making it nearly twice as old as its owner. The guys climb into this Supra to see how it holds up, and why a young driver might want it as their first car.

The guy who owns the electronics store down the road from my parents house owned one of these and drove it for 15+ years. I remember recognizing the lovely straight 6 sound it made as he drove home from work every evening after closing down the store. Sometimes he floored it and the sound echoed between the buildings. It's an overlooked classic that has aged gracefully.

Don't take this the wrong way I respect my dad but it's the truth, he was really stupid in convincing me to get a brand new 90 Mustang GT when I was just 19 yrs old. I just wanted a nice used cruiser like a T top Trans Am with automatic. He actually convinced me to get a Mustang GT 5 speed. All I have to say is I am lucky to be here after that thing. Yes it was some fun, but it was dangerous for me. And when I was driving it like everyone else drives around, cops still stopped me. I was stopped a total of 5 times in the first few months I had it and by some real assholes. They totally killed the spirit of anything left, and on top of going into debt with it I had to give it up. Yes this guy's dad was super smart. Even now as mature as I am, I'd rather have a lower powered car even today. A V6 Mustang is a good choice if you can get over the fact the V6 is so inefficient.

@@pmac2558 I had a black '79 with dark tinted windows and I thought it was beautiful. I put a front air dam on it and it looked amazing. People used to stop me to ask what kind of car it was. +88supra719 Nice. Had an MA70 myself. Be sure to re-torque the head bolts, check your valve shim clearances, change your water pump and install a new timing belt kit. The 7MGE is a great engine, but the rear cylinders get pretty hot, so make sure your cooling system is up to scratch. Consider installing some Altima thermo fans controlled by a temperature switch in the thermostat housing, and fitting some rear bonnet vents in preference to shimming the bonnet latches. Have fun! :D

I love the fact that you guys reviewed this car. I've owned 2 in my past-and 82 and an 86-and I loved them both. Compared to today's technology they aren't as fast or nimble, but in those days when this newly styled Supra was amazing. Everything takes perspective. The styling of the Supra has always been very appealing to me and still is. It was very modern for the times. The seats were amazing, and that bladder operated lumbar support was new and worked- you could drive this car for hours comfortably. I used to cruise the Pennsylvania turnpike from Pittsburgh to Harrisburg at "radar moderated hi speeds" and loved every minute. The faster you drove, the better the car performed and handled. The performance was great without being "race ready crazy". And features like remote operated rear view mirrors were just things not found in many cars in those days-it was like the cusp of sporty meets comfortable, and dependable, new technology features, and fun. And it was relatively affordable for what you got in the car...whereas most head-turners of the time were much more money. That eventually changed as the Supra matured into bad-boy racer and the price tag became unattainable for most people. Devon is a lucky guy to own this car...my first car was far less impressive and fun. Good job to him and his dad for bringing this baby back to life.

Yeah I really wanted an AE86 too. I actually found an early 90's Trueno for sale here, but it doesn't look much different from my 94 Camry. Ended up getting an 88' Supra garage queen (non-turbo) for $8K. I absolutely adore the car even if for 200HP it's not particularly fast. Has PLENTY of torque.

My first car was a Celica GT, which I drove to-and-from the family cottage for years, most weekends. It maxed out at 120 kph on the highway, so I didn't hold up the rest of manic traffic, and it loved the canyons. Loved that beast, but it leaked and rusted spectacularly. In the rear seats, you could pat the rear tires at one point, as the panels were gone. Dad helped restore it enough, but then school and other priorities lead to it's sale. That car still influences my buying and driving decisions today.

Great piece! I love that road too, especially on my moto! My first roommate in Utah has an 82 Supra he bought in 84 and has babied since, even as a daily driver in Utah for almost 15 years. Plus ppl like you who pass up on the good cars are the reason I have my good ones. I bet Civic's, and Cressida's are gay also. Lord knows the mk3 and Cressida don't have the same drive train, suspension, same engine family, and same set-up only better than the mk2, so they would have to suck.

My dad had an 84 Celica Supra, bought it new, keep it for 18 years until some joe-bob went passing another car on a double yellow line and dad drove off into a corn field rather then headoning 4 wheel drive stump jumper. He walked away, the other car that was being illegally passed stop to help, but joe bob keep driving, car was totaled. We have an 89 Supra now, turbo with targa top and it's nice, inside and out, he even put one of those TRD emblems on the front grill. Those older Celica Supra's are not around anymore because for the most part they rusted away and meet the crusher over a decade ago, with the few that are left finding parts for them is beyond a major challenge, it's a challenge for the Gen III's.

I graduated from high school in 1983. I wanted a Celica Supra so bad. Its $14,000 price tag was far from attainable. Also at 6.5 feet tall I could not fit. It weighed under 3000 pounds and had 145 very optimistic hp. That may no seem like much.....The $9,000 Mustang GT had 154 hp. The GTI had 90. The CRX I purchased in 1984 had 72 hp. Although the CRX only weighed 1750 pounds. 1000 pounds LIGHTER than my BRZ.

+fatboy19831 The CRX in 1984 didnt have 72hp they only had 65hp at the Flywheel in the states. In Japan and Australia they had a first generation B16 with 135hp the Only 1st Gen Crx in the States with over 70 Hp was the Si and it was only for the 1985 model Year.

darkblaze176 I owned a 1984 Honda Crx it had 76 hp. It also had a 3 barrel carburetor. The CRX Hf had 60 hp and could do almost 60 mpg on the highway. The Si came out in 85 and had 91 hp and fuel injection. We never received the B16 in the states. I lived through that time. I did not google it.

darkblaze176 I owned a 1984 CRX it had a 1.5 76 hp engine. It toped out at 105 mph averaged 31 mpg and weighed 1780 pounds. No the Hf did not have 76 hp it had 60 hp. It weighed almost 100 pounds less than the standard CRX and had ultra tall gears. Honda America did not know jack back then. Honda kept everything hush hush. No one knew anything till the cars hit the street. No one believed me when I said Honda was going high end with Acura. Dude your wrong back off. "There was a 1.5-liter option at launch, but the CRX legend didn't materialize until mid-1985, with the arrival of the Si. The highly optioned, port fuel-injected screamer used its 91 hp to scoot to 60 in 8.5 seconds, nearly three seconds quicker than the 76-hp carbureted 1.5." Road and track.

I'm sure the transmission shifted much better ~34 years ago. I had the 4 cylinder version of this car -- Celica GTS and it shifted nicely. Well... Toyota-like, but not as good as my old '91 MX-5 or current '94 R7. Btw, the GTS looked just like the Supra besides the longer nose and front grill area. Same wheels, tires, seats (loved them) fender flares, but slower than the Supra because it was just a 4-banger (nice engine). In other words it was pretty much identical to the Supra from the firewall to the rear end. It was a great, reliable college car. Nice video! :thumbs up: /subscribed

I bought my mom's 82 Toyota Supra 5-speed baby blue for 500 bucks. She lost the key at a party and it's set in our driveway for 3 years before I broke the steering lock on it and slapped a battery in it when I was 15 behind her back in 1999. She didn't care about the steering lock and was just so excited about the fact that I got it running. While nobody was home I drove it down the street and didn't realize the muffler was partially rusted and it fell off, after that it sounded like a NASCAR. I learned a lot about cars the next half-decade working on that thing. Every time I had a dream about driving cars I was always in my Supra for some weird reason LOL. Even decades after

Congrats to the young owner, you've got yourself one unique ride!! Owned one new in '82 (white) and loved it, it was pretty competitive in it's day, a nice combination of comfort, utility (hatch design), styling, and reasonable street performance. Would love to have it back, for sure, I sold it for a '85 Mustang GT (POS) which sold ASAP for an '86 Corvette that sold as soon as I drove it back to back with my '89 Supra (a far superior, high quality car). Those were the days when I has some disposal income and did just that, dispose of it to various car dealers. Truly the allure of the many Toyota's I've owned grows stronger with each year that passes, especially the Supra's. Fingers crossed and hoping for the best with the new Supra, manual transmission please! Thanks for sharing... Ciao.

I graduated high school in 1982 and I remember going to the Toyota dealer and totally falling in love with this car. As a kid though, the $15k sticker might as well have been a million dollars. Luckily, in 1983 my dad bought us a used 1982 Mustang GT (for $7k unbelievably) and that was such a great car I never cared about a Supra anymore.

I think this little Supra is so much cooler and interesting than cars costing far far more. Love it.

I love my MKII. Comfiest 30 year old seats ever. Sunroof. Removed the 230,000km 5m, replaced with a 60,000 km na 1j. Instant extra 60 hp. Fabulously cool cruiser.

Great review and story. That was a great looking Supra for is age. My Dad rebuilt an MGB roadster and I got to watch the process, then got my own MGB GT, a great way to learn about cars. Suffice to say, I was older than 16 when this happened.

I remember my first ride in it as a passenger.Glued me to the seat and scared the crap out of me. Not even a Mitsubishi Evo could do it to me decade later or any other faster car.

My second car was an 1985 version of this MK2. That angular aggressive 80's styling brings back so many memories. I loved that car, but I'll add that she was really practical as well. The big hatchback area hid a full sized spare (note the unusual 4 bolt pattern). Once you folded the very functional rear seats forward you had a very roomy cargo area that easily fit a mountain bike, sometimes without removing the wheel. The cloth seats were comfortable (I'm 6'1") and that squeeze bulb for lumbar support wasn't remotely the only bit of adjustment you could make with the seat, headrest and steering wheel. Unlike the depicted version above, my MK2 also had a power sunroof which I greatly enjoyed. Took a lot of summertime naps with the sunroof open to the sky. The manual transmission also had a functional cruise control which was handy on longer trips away from urban traffic. Overall a car I was extremely happy to have owned.

Do you like this car or not? You keep saying it’s a fun car, but you’ve been knocking how slow and cumbersome it is for 2/3rds of the video. It’s 40 years old! It’s not going to perform like a modern super car. At any rate, thanks for doing this review! It’s one of my favorite cars and I fondly remember wanting one when I first got my license. This car ROCKS!

Bruce, you remind me of an '81 black Celica Supra I bought for parts to keep my other good one going almost forever ( Toyotas are most reliable so I haven't used many parts yet). I prefer the curved shape of my 1st gen celica Supra but with '82+ rims, recaro seats & rear wing, looks stunning!! My cousin commented it didn't look like any other car & I said exactly!, that's the point! Its now rare and timelessly beautiful!!

My father used to have a 86 model and I was supposed to get when I hit my current age, but a few years back we ran into some money problems and sadly, he sold it. I have recently been looking for the current owner to get in contact with him so I can see this beautiful machine again. God I miss this car!

I loved this car. It was my dream... actually... the 1985 turbo with the big spoiler was my dream car, but close enough. You guys been doing some cool cars, like the E24 which is another one of my favorites. I used to sneak my stepdad's 1988 L6 out when he went on vacation.

I had an '84 Supra like this generation in the sky blue color, and an '88 also. My '84 even had the raised white lettering like this one so it brings back memories. I loved that car. My favorite compliments when I had my two Supras were, "What is that?" Made me feel like I had something exotic. And who wants to be the 2nd or 3rd person on the block with a Mustang or Camaro or something everyone knows...until you want to buy parts for it (then you wish they were more common).

My uncle had one of these back in 91. I Remember what yr it was because was same year my dog died lol. It was an early to mid 80s. I Remember the seats would pump up with air. As a 12 yr old kid I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

MK2 Supras looked so bad ass in black color, mean looking like Darth Vader's outfit, those wheels, the wing, the fender flares, the magnum pi ferrari look alike nose grill , and the white rear Supra lift gate decal and those huge square red tail lights made it look super mean bad ass car. This car was so advanced yet simple for its time, rack and pinon, rear independent suspension, efi, power everything, etc

The all-new 1984 Datsun 300ZX Turbo V6 was the cat's meow -- & you paid an arm & a leg of you wanted one! My original '84 300ZX Anniversary Edition stickered at $29,995 in 1984, which included $3,000 dealer markup because of high demand!
