Yes, I miss this car. Brought a brand new one, Black in 1983. At the time it was one of the best out there. It was so nice in fact, that some one stole it from a parked garage.
whereisthe dollar can’t imagine living in a time where stealing a brand new car was as straight forward as jamming in a flat-head and connecting a wire
such fucking professional film production. Great camera work. I love how they make it seem like it's a static shot or something but then suddenly the car drives away or the camera pans out and its all one shot. You just don't see this sort of camera work these days.
I remember those Supra's being such a big deal when they came out! They were so beautiful, the design was so advanced! I should have bought one, but I was young and dumb.
I bought a brand new 1985 Supra in deep red color and drove it for the next 23 years 275K miles without major issues. I wish I never sold it because Supra has it all: quality, durability, longevity dependability, style, comfort, handling, driving enjoyment, utility, low cost of maintenance.
The beginning of Toyota's most glorious years, 1982-1999. The bubble and post-bubble years. It has been a sleeping pill of a car company since the discontinuation of the MR2 and Celica.
I bet the Celica and MR2 re-appear some day. Unless, the Solara re-appears, it may replace the Celica... or maybe even the Scion FR-S replaces the Celica.
Jack Lope Toyota's replacement for the celica was the introduction of the Scion TC. FF configuration with similar coupe/liftback styling makes the TC a suitable replacement. I believe (correct me if i am wrong) the FR-S was supposed to be a revival of the FR configuration of the Corolla, hence the "86" badges on the fender vents.
The 80's and 90's were such a whirlwind of advances in pretty much all aspects of motoring. Even though we started at pretty much ground zero in 1980, I'm still glad I was around for it. Thanks Motorweek for sharing your well documented experiences of it all be it American, European, or Asian.
I owned an ‘84, an ‘85 and an ‘86 throughout my 20’s and I have lots of memories with these cars. I drove them all over the country and since I was a Toyota tech at the time, maintenance and repairs were a walk in the park for me. I have had many cars since then but these will always hold a special place in my heart. Great seeing these period reviews of the classics.
Best car I've ever owned. I had a '84 in the same light blue color. Beautiful car, wish I still had it but the body rusted away. Damn shame, everything else about the car was excellent.
Hands down, to 70s 80s and 90s cars, I miss mi celica just like that one.i had it back in 1999.if I had only known how popular and and expensive they would be
I had that drivers seat in my 84 Celica GTS notchback coupe. I have as of yet found another drivers seat that fits me so well. The three lower back bladders really worked, and the adjustable front seat cushion stiffness and (easily adjusted) height and angle adjustable headrest made driving that car a joy.
The non US Supra and the non US Celica hatchback had black plastic air vents (may be not functional but for styling) on the rear fenders, where as the Supra / Celica for the US market had the rear side marker lights. Non US cars also did not have the front orange side marker light as well. Those rims look so solid.
@@philipcaouette1724 *Last three decades now. I believe the '83 Celica Supra was the last car Toyota would make that can truly be classified as gorgeous.
Man, I *loved* that generation of Supra when it came out.... I remember staring through the closed dealerships' giant glass window at night at a beautiful red Supra... feeling equal parts admiration and lust.
Dang! This car was ahead of it's time. I bought a 1988 Ford LX Mustang 5.0 over the Supra! Though the Mustang would whip the Supra it was not as refined as the Supra! But, Also price was the decider!$14,000 +tax Mustang VS 1988;Toyota Supra 16,500 plus tax! Wish I had one now though 34 mph on the Hwy! Dang that's better than most current 4 cylinders! Go Toyota? Also, Thank God for John Davidson and Motor Week! I used to get up at 6:00am on Saturdays in NYC to catch the show on PBS or NBC!Truly, Classic stuff and ahead of RU-vid!
I still lust for these some 30 years later. The best looking cars of the era for sure. But I have to say that Toyota lost their way somewhere and never found their way back. Wow, just seeing one again has me wanting it!
reflecting chromes on headlights, bulging fender, good inline 6 engine and suspension, and manual.. Awesome to this day, if I see one in person once in a while...
I actually had an 84 of the same color blue in this video. I loved that car and still miss it 28 years later. Then I had an 88 targa because I had to have another Supra. Those were great cars and I was thrilled to have them!
My dad, a car mechanic, once fixed an '82 Supra for someone. Black on black, digital dash, five speed -- it was fully loaded. I really wanted that car! Don't see them on the road much these days.
My dad have one when it first came out in 1982 lol.. Was yours the P type? That's cool man.. And by 1986.. He almost finished the payment and was waiting on to traded it for the new 1987 toyota supra turbo when it is first released in 87' lol
My aunties boyfriend had one of these in 83’ and to us kids in those days it was the coolest thing. Especially all those dash lights and stereo equalizer. Those were the good days for Toyota.
K Miles I got mine in about '95. It was the greatest car I've ever owned. Never had a problem with it. I ended up getting rid of it when my crazy boyfriend crashed it straight into a curb going 40, trying to kill me. It cracked the front harness for the suspension. Even after that I drove it for a long, long, time because I was able rig it enough to drive it.
Just bought a mint 85 Celica GT-S 5-speed last September. It gets an unbelievable amount of attention, and most people mistake it for a Supra. Can't even put gas in it without people coming over to check it out!
The local used car dealer always had these Surpas on their lot in the mid-90's. They must have been very plentiful then, but it's now such a rare bird. I ended up buying a used 300ZX Turbo years later to scratch that itch, as they were still somewhat easy to find.
I had a red, 1983, Supra. It was so amazing. It was the most fun I ever had, in a car. I had a crazy boyfriend that crashed it into a curb going 40 mph. It broke the front end and I was never able to find a replacement front end for it--it went to Supra heaven. I would buy another one in a heartbeat.
I had an 84. Supra! What a great car!! I also had the 86.5 model when it changed. It was cooler looking bu didn’t Handel quite as well. Miss my Supras.
A friend bought a used Supra that was 5 years old, with 110,000 kilometers on it, and proceeded to thrash it for 4 more years, and he couldn't kill it! And trust me, he tried!
david dykeman there’s a few Lexus’s that you could consider a Celica successor, and I think the Scion TS or whatever it was called was meant to be one too
When I was looking for my first car, had my eye on used 86 Supra and 86 Celica coupe. WOW, they were so expensive. Sadly I never got one. When I was able to afford something more expensive, the price of the Supra went sky high when they updated it in 87. The turbo Supra back then seemed like a luxury rocket ship!
It was my first car. You won`t believe how good it was in the winter. First ones with single cam and analog speedo had max 85mph on the dash, mine did twice that with no tuning parts.
Had an 85. Loved the look and feel. Seats held you in and were soo comfortable (Wish I had them in my living room). Not quick from a standstill but from 40-100+ yesss. Great on dry pavement, bad on wet, horrible in snow. Wish I still had mine.
Had an 85 as well. I did crash in the rain which caused one of the headlight to permanently stay open. Driving it in the snow was terrifying as well. However, I loved it since it was my first car and was much loved by my friends and strangers as well.
Minor point.... this Light Blue press car is most definitely a 1982 model year, and an early version at that, measured by the front badge missing the "Celica" name. This would've been most likely filmed in the Fall of 1981... probably right around the inception of MotorWeek.
In my opinion, this was the best looking Celica and Supra generation of them all! I had a friend with a coupe and another with a Supra hatch and really wanted one myself but couldn't afford one at the time.. Call it the Broke Teen Blues I guess..
Kind of looks like the luxury version of the AE86 Corolla hatch. Bigger, heavier, way better equipped. IMO its a classic design, Toyota was making some great looking cars back in the 80's IMO.
John missed the most important question “What are the chances of this drivetrain still going after 40 yrs?”. The natural answer should be “Far better than any of the garbage the big 3 are putting out right now. No one can ever say that the big 3 didn’t have plenty of notice that the Japanese were coming on strong and making great products.
These were very exciting cars when they came out. I managed to get a test-drive in one, though I couldn't afford to buy it. I immediately fell in love with it, and would have bought it if I could. It had a smooth and torquey inline-6, great looks, lots of neat features, and a high-quality feel that really impressed me. Later, when I looked at them as used cars, the problem I found was that the interiors did not seem to hold up well at all. So I never bought one. Most of them seemed to disappear pretty quickly, and now they're almost all long-gone, I guess. Too bad, it was a cool car.
Had an 85 through most of 90's.. 5 speed made a difference, and it was loaded with features. It even had a small subwoofer under front dash. I simply wore it out and sold it at 285K. It was seen by friends in my old small town for years after.
I'm still pissed at myself for missing out on a pristine 84 version of this beauty :( Dream car of mine and tbh I prefer the Supra when it was under the Celica
My dad had a 84 and he gave it to me when I was a senior in high school, I went off into the military went to my first deployment came back with $10,000 planning on fixing the supra, came back and my dad sold it, I was pissed, i miss this damn car every day, one day ill get one
Motor Week... Thank you for uploading all these classic reviews its got all of the specs and car talk that i need and great car selection, oh the supra with its rear wing that keeps the sun from toasting the rear passengers hahahaha :P
Back when Toyota had cojones! Great car, my uncle had one and my friends dad had one too. We got busted by the cops as my friend powerslid out of a street corner while we were blasting Prince's "1999" song on the radio. LOL. Nicely executed slide, the cop just gave him a warning.
Johnboy Me too. I've been looking and either they are in terrible shape or whoever owns it doesn't realize it's a car from 1983 and are asking an arm and a leg.
@@frankiejo6988 that's because most people would not be willing to pay the top trim when buying a Celica, and for that reason these are extremely rare cars to find in good shape.
Toyota needs to bring back the supra or celica , i was detailing cars at Toyota during that time cleaned up a white one with leather and parked it in showroom and sold that afternoon, could not keep those cars on the lot for very long really sold quick even more when the turbo supra was introduced.
Awe man you are so lucky you got to drive one! I have an MK3 Supra (my project car) and I really want the Mk4 Supra. It has been my dream car since I was like 9 years old.
Yea man I had a black 84 Supra and had the windows and hatch glass tinted black. I used to keep the rims clean as hell. It looked like it was from the future
They still do. Even though it doesn't have a Toyota badge the Scion FR-S is very much considered a sports car and there is also a few recent Lexus cars that would be considered as sports cars especially the LFA. It still would be nice if they could introduce a Toyota badged sports car. Something that they could do to bring back either the Celica or Supra name is to take a FR-S and swap its engine out with either the STi or one of the 300+ HP Lexus engines. Going with the STi engine would cost nearly nothing when it comes to engineering since the platform already is running a non FI Impreza engine but a V6 from Lexus with a nice exhaust would sound pretty sweet.
Andrew Walters lol that is really just a Subaru BRZ dude. They say Toyota helped develop it, but everyone knows that's b.s. Toyota shouldn't hitch a ride on someone else's stuff anyway, they know how to make sporty cars they're just being cheap and lazy. DoubleD 613 is right...
Poop I think you got it backwards. Subaru would never have made the brz. All their cars are awd, except the brz. The car was indeed engineered by toyota with the help of subaru. The only thing really engineered by subaru is the motor, hence why it's a boxer engine. As part of the partnership, subaru was able to make their own version of the car.
21/34 is good by today's standard for a 6 cylinder. I had an '84 Celica GTS that is basically this car with a 22RE instead of the 6 cylinder. The GTS had the same interior down to the stereo. I wish I had a one of these but swapped with a 2JZ!
@@TheElChayanne OF COURSE I AM! lol just kidding. I had a 1984 Supra, “gun metal blue” and a buddy of mine liked it so much he bought a silver 1985 Supra. 1986 is when the rounded out Supra’s with turbo option came out
I remember vividly when this car was sitting at our local Toyota dealership. It was the most beautiful of Toyotas to ever grace that lot and they were always lined up at the very front, with one sitting on a trailer up high, in case you missed the others. They were very nice cars, though slow.
I remember back in 1984 I was 18 just graduated from HS and remember taking my parents to DTLA Toyota dealership and remember seeing one in the showroom and wanting one bad but $15k and me without a job wasn’t going to fly,my Mother bought me instead a 1984 Toyota Tercel 2 door hatchback 4 speed stick,no A/C,it ran only $6500 no power anything, that thing was impossible to kill, had lots of fun with it.😊
They probably couldn't have imagined what the Supra became just ten years after this..... An absolute beast. And they're so rare. Well, at least around where I live. I think I've seen only one.
I believe it was a huge step backward in the looks department. The A80 is a hideous car. When I think Supra, the gorgeous A60 Supra is the first one that comes to mind.
Bought a clean 86 with a manual for close to nothing in the late 00's. Wish I never sold it but didn't think it would be such a highly desired classic at the time.
always wanted one. a neighbor had a dark red one for many years. I also like the style of the basic Celica. when they became rounded and jellybean like a few years later I was less interested.
