Down in Australia the land cruisers are very popular. Even the models from the late 80s still go strong, especially the diesels. I got an uncle who has one from the late 90s and has 600,000km on it and has zero problems. Some say these cars will outlive humanity

I had a 76 . It made a jeep look like a tin can. Kind of like a 3/4 ton Chevy. The CV joints looked like the ones on the Army truck I drove. I could get 11 miles per gallon. Installed Holly economaster carb and got up to 16. Toyota had no concern for fuel economy. It had big mud tires. Drove terribly. Traded the wheels and tires for stock rims. Put Michelin highway tires on it. Drove like a sport car.

It’s amazing how reliable they are. When I was in asia we had Hilux, Surfs, and LCs. Very reliable vehicles. What makes Australia great for vehicle is the climate. The problem in north america is the climate and what they use on the road in the winter. Especially when you live in the salt belt. You can have the best engine but the body just rots from daily driving in the winter. Roughly the life of the average petrol engine goes along with the lifespan of the frame in the salt belt. So how They see it why sell diesel that lasts 600,000km when the frame barely gets to 300,000km. Some states are better than others like Florida, Arizona, New Mexico that doest really get snow. Those are the states that you can see older vehicles in good shape (90s and older). When you are in the salt belt you’ll be lucky to find a 90s car that’s a daily (winter and summer) that has a clean body.

Japanese and their "reverse engineering": a Chinese junk with Portuguese adventurers on board was driven to anchor by a storm in 1543. The lord of the Japanese island, Tanegashima Tokitaka (1528-1579), purchased two matchlock muskets from the Portuguese and put a swordsmith to work copying the matchlock barrel and firing mechanism. The Portuguese fixed their ship and left the island. Within ten years of its introduction, over 300,000 tanegashima firearms were reported to have been manufactured. The next time Europeans tried to threaten the Japanese with superior firepower the way they had other Asian cultures, they found themselves staring down the barrels of these meticulously-crafted tanegashima muskets.

@@brandonblanco8379 And yeah diesel cars are very common. I would say at least 35-40% of the cars are diesel here. I could be wrong don't know really where to look for the data (don't know if government or anyone really researches this but this is my estimate from what I've seen in the last 4 years I've been driving) Toyota Hiluxes (similar to Tacomas that are in the US) are very common and people love it. Military and Police have those too and almost every Hilux that I've seen is a Diesel Hilux.

In Central America and South Africa we had these with diesels. Much to be said for diesels, depending on local fuel prices and that has much to do with current tax whims of the powers-that-be. My last diesel was a South-Africa- built Ford Ranger after the Australian design, with turbo diesel manual gearbox and dual cab, badged as a Mazda Drifter - my favorite of 26 vehicles owned since 1968. For excellent vehicles, look what the big names are doing outside the States.

My boss has a 2005 Sequoia Gold edition. That thing has over 500,000 miles on it and everything still works, except for the back hatch window, which was a defect from Toyota. It's his daily driver as we work in construction doing drywall and metal framing and practically drive everywhere for work. But it's so amazing how if you take care of it and replace the parts and pieces at they're recommended maintenance intervals, that thing could basically last forever. I mean the AC still works. He always used Mobil 1 synthetic oil also. The only downside is the thing does not get great gas mileage, but every time he turns that key all you hear is free money.
