This is the second part in a 2-part series showing how to bleed the ICE engine coolant in Prius Gen II. If you haven't watched Part 1 yet (Burping / Getting Rid Of Trapped Air in Coolant Heat Recovery System Tank Canister), please watch it here: • Prius Coolant Bleeding...
This video is for Toyota Prius Gen II I4 1.5L Hybrid Synergy Drive. Second generation Prius model years are 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 & 2009. Bleeding or burping on other generations Prius might be different.
When you drain the coolant, whether for scheduled maintenance or if you have had to replace components such as radiator, hoses and pumps, refilling the coolant is only the initial stage of a complicated process. The next step is to bleed or burp the cooling system to get rid of the present of the air pockets.
"Burping" the cooling system in your Toyota refers to bleeding the cooling system and is necessary if air has entered the system. Air in the cooling system causes hot spots and subsequently overheating and serious engine damage. Failure to bleed trapped air will result in the dreaded triangle of death followed by temperature icon on the instrument cluster and dashboard display. There might, however, not be any CEL or error codes.
Other than the triangle of death icon followed by temperature icon, symptoms of air bubbles in the system are as follows: When you turned the car on, and/or while driving you can hear the sound of water travelling in the engine compartment into the heater core inside the cabin. You'll hear "gurgling" , "wooshing", or "swishing" sound coming from the middle of the dashboard inside the car, which means there's trapped air inside the heater core.
Burping or bleeding trapped air is rather complicated because Generation 2 Toyota Prius Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) cooling system has a Coolant Heat Recovery Storage Tank Canister (CHRS). So before you can get ride of air inside the heater core, you must first get rid of the air inside the CHRS.
In the first part of the video as described above, young mechanic Aiman showed you how to remove the air pockets inside the CHRS by activating its pump by using relay to force coolant into Heat Storage Tank thereby removing any trapped air there. In that video, Aiman also explained what CHRS is, how it works, why it's there, its functions and purposes. CHRS rarely malfunctioned, but its pump may, and you might get DTC P1151 if the water sender temperature sensor is malfunction.
After CHRS has been bled, the next step is to remove trapped air (or air pockets) inside the heater core. This process involved turning the engine car on without driving it (putting in in test / maintenance / inspection / diagnostic mode), revving the RPM to 3000, turning the heat to max allows the radiator fluid to circulate through the cooling system to ensure that all air bubbles are eliminated from the system. Remove the radiator cap, insert a large funnel into the neck and the fill with coolant. After the engine has reached operating temperature and the thermostat opens, open the bleeder valve and squeeze the upper and lower radiator hoses. This is what this video is all about. In this video Aiman also showed how to do it even if you have an aftermarket radiator (with different style bleeder valve) as opposed to the genuine OEM one.
In order to bleed the air out of heater core, you will need to idle the engine / keep the engine running continuously. We have a separate video on how to to do that: • How To Put A Prius Int... (How To Put Prius Gen II in Maintenance or Inspection Mode).
Keep in mind that the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) cooling system is separate and independent of the hybrid inverter cooling system, and if you want to know how to bleed the inverter coolant, check out our video here: • How To Bleed INVERTER ...
The ICE cooling system uses the same type of coolant as the inverter cooling system. Gen 2 was factory filled with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (SLLC). SLLC pink is premixed, eliminating the hassle of mixing and the potential for error. Toyota Super LongLife Coolant (pink) is just regular ethylene glycol silicate-free premixed Phosphate-based Hybrid Organic Acid Technology (HOAT / OAT). It is Silicate, Amine & Borate free. This genuine OEM manufacturer recommended coolant from Toyota dealership is rather expensive. Alternatives such as Zerex Asian, Pentosin Pentofrost A4 or other HOAT/OAT red/pink Super Extended Life coolant from Valvoline, Peak, Prestone etc., available at your local auto parts stores such as Advanced Auto Parts, AutoZone, O'Reilly, NAPA, PepBoys and even at Walmart -- can also be considered.
Thanks for watching and please watch other DIY and auto repair, how to remove, install, replace, repair and fix it ideas, guide, tutorials, and tools review videos on this channel.

I am 64 years old. Young man you saved my ass. Here is my story. I had a code P1116 "Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor". I followed a video on how to replace the sensor. I drained the coolant into a 5 liter automotive container, replaced the sensor and slowly replaced the coolant like I have done so often over the years with other vehicles. Once the gravity feed stopped I had about a quart of coolant left over. Simple solution right just take the car for short drive so the coolant can run thru the system and when I get back I can I'll add more coolant. WROOOOONG! Luckily I had my diagnostic meter set to test the temperature sensor. After about a mile I was already over 200 degrees so I high tailed it back to my garage to investigate what the hell was happening. I found your video. I should have known that my Prius Gen II would have some incredibly complex procedure just to add coolant. Your demonstration on how to run the circulating pump was the key. Following your video I ran the circulating pump in short 10-15 second intervals adding my remaining coolant until the air bubbles ceased. My next test drive provided a steady 177 degree coolant temperature with hot air blasting out the vents. Again, thank you for your hard work in producing these videos. You saved one old fool from disaster.

I wanted to thank you for your excellent video chronicling the process. I was able to successfully replace my water pump and bleed the system with the information you provided. The technical manuals do now show the ins and outs of the process as you did. Once again, many thanks!

Good job kid! I owe you a beer!...er uhmm...soda? Your rookie mistakes are relevant and keep it real and interesting. Your in depth look at the system bring all the other (youtuber) videos together. I did not realize how much is involved in the Prius coolant system. You saved me time, headaches and a lot of money! Many thanks to you and your crew. I hope your videos pay off, you guys did a lot of work.

Re: the carbon monoxide discussion at 7:00 , you should also have a CO sensor in your garage. They are about $25 at Home Depot. It's a good idea to have one even if the door is open.

Saved my life as well, replaced the coolant on Valvoline, never changed the coolant, since I bought the car 3 years ago and 140000 miles later. But the car had all the symptoms, heating up, red triangle of death, no hot air when on high temperature. Follow your steps and 1 week has passed and everything is back to normal. I was afraid it was something more serious like a leak on the hoses or one those pump failures. Thanks again.

Can you Please Help?? Can you show us how to do this on a 3rd Gen toyota prius years 2010-2015, we have major issues with air bubbles in our coolant system also, and 1 more ?, can't we use 2 paper clips to jump it instead of a volt meter, I have seen many others jump stuff on 3rd gens before that way?.

Yeah about the tightness of the funnel. I cant find a funnel that wont allow constant release of coolant around the edges. Its like none of them are tight enough and it ends up just infinitely going into the tip top of the Radiator neck, then into overflow tube and into the reservoir. WHY CANT MY EXPERIENCE BE THE SAME AS THESE VIDEOS MY GOD I ABOUTGBH EUGBT*(U#

I am bleeding dry trying to figure out why the heat gradually is depleted in my 2017 Toyota Prius ..bad timing when depleted to nonexistent and needing the defrost on the inside window December 23...the Toyota dealership said they could not find any leaks but did top up the coolant for $125.00. They never mentioned the possibility of air pockets. After topping up the coolant, the heat was effective for 3 days, which included one long drive, but now the heat is weakening and perhaps some weird thermostat stuff happening but hard to know since the heat is nonresponsive to the thermostat if the heat is not there anyway.. Thank you for posting this so I can be more educated as I try to" help the help" figure this out...as it is labour cost while they try to figure it out and probably are not given time to look on RU-vid.

could a coolant leak cause a misfire in the prius? I have coolant leaking somewhere under the car forming a puddle, and since this started happening, I have a misfire in multiple banks... its random. Could this be related to my coolant leaking in some way? It doesn't seem like it could be a head gasket blown because the coolant is not mixing with my oil.

@@EyeOnAiman I took my time in soaking the fasteners that hold the condenser and radiator so I could reuse all the hardware. I also changed the thermostat since it was all exposed, but now after getting a good look at the condenser, that thing is about to go. I think your content was very well organized and complete to get it done with confidence.

Do you know if any heater core air bubbles would cause an issue with the hybrid system charge when you get on the freeway? I have no issues driving city but at high speeds the charge drains and struggles to get charged up "consistently" while noticing coolant smell in car and coolant level always changing and had overheat light come on. I know the gen 2 model really good but this issue is insane. I'm going to flush coolant system AND heater core today will update when done but Just wanted to know if my issues sound familiar

Great video thank man, I own a 2004 prius, I had the code 1121, do I replace the coolant valve, and I solve this code but a few miles after the Chek engine light come on, so I scanned and now I have the code 1122 and I don't have heat in the cabin, so I think I need the bleed out the air of the system. What do you think?
@13smallcha

So I followed this today (I've done this a few times before). I used an AirLift and purped the storage tank following your other video. When I was all done I squeezed the top radiator hose and to my surprise go a big air bubble. Matter of fact squeezing that hose several times I got more air bubbles out than with the other burp procedures. Seems that should be added to your others since it's so easy and effective?

So, I never had to actually fill my reservoir. Somehow the fluid I was putting into my Radiator made its way into the reservoir that was empty, and is now completely full (way above full line). So filling it from Radiator to full didn't work, as it all just went to my reservoir. What do?
