1990 Toyota Starlet. My daughters little car failed it's WOF. (Warrant Of Fitness.) This was my effort to change out a knackered rear wheel bearing with minimum tools.
I have a Tercel, but its the same process. Thanks for showing how the crown cap thingy and all that goes together, as well as calling out the size of the nuts.
Great video. Well shot and edited. Watching as a sanity check for doing the same job on my car. Tip; use the old bearing race to tap in the new one. It distributes the impact evenly.
Oh my. I'm sure there would be much better videos out there for learning that stuff. I'm what ya might call a bush mechanic, but good for you for getting in there. I'm sure your dad is proud no matter what.
Your a legend mate. Thanks for putting in the time and effort into making this video. I’m about to change the bearings on my 1998 starlet. I’ll try the oven freezer method and see if that works. Will let you know !
Thanks Bob. That was in springtime. We are fair cooking now though. Mid to high high 30'sC lately. I hope your winter isn't too bad although I hear some places are getting hammered in the top part of the planet.
Thank you mate, great work even without a press. Those races can take a bit of stick as I've done the same method before and as long as you're even with the taps and don't put any gouges in the side, it seems to be ok.
It's better to use the old bearing sleeve to get the new one in by putting it on top and tap it with the hammer. You don't apply grease that way, the best way is to use the indentation technique to make sure the bearing is greased throughly.
Okay there's a couple things here that are causing my head to explode, number one when installing the new race use the old race to tap on, do not tap on it with a punch, number two that is absolutely not how you pack grease into a wheel bearing lookup the proper procedure for packing wheel bearing grease
Can spmeone pls explain what os making noose, because when i drive i hear a loud RRRRRRRRRRR sound on the front right side and when i brake it sounds like steal on steal touching eachother ... pls pls pls someone give me a tip because i startet hearing it today
As you can probably tell I'm just a bush mechanic. I'm sure there is a torque setting but I do 'em up by feel. Too tight and the bearings bind, too loose and there is play. The split pin is the essential ingredient. Lol !!
Tapered bearings like this only require the nut to be hand tightened. Tightening with a wrench can damage the bearings, I learned that the hard way. Put your nut on hand tight, then spin the wheel for a good 30 seconds or so to seat the bearings, then hand tighten the nut again. I repeat the spin/tighten process a couple times for peace of mind. Always use new dust caps as well.
@@thedivisionbell220 "....put your nut on hand tight then spin the wheel....." JD, you saved me some precious time and money with the above. Bless you!
You were almost there when you used the old bearing race to knock the dust seal in.The old races make a perfect matching drift and as they are being chucked doesn't matter if you bash 'em about. Would dearly love to come and show you how its done but I have to paddle my own canoe and its a lot of paddling from Blighty!
No mate I think you have nothing better to do than put caustic comments on old videos. Good for you. My mum always said, if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing.
@@volgnit I have no idea how to wire an electrical panel but I could probably do a "ok" job with a bit of time and effort. But posting it to youtube may imply it was done professionally and to code. I'm totally fine with this video, BUT put a caption in the first 10 secs: "I am not a professional"
@@Roboticpycotic Yeah, thanks for your advise mate. I'll come over to your channel sometime and learn how I should do it. I don't recall ever saying I was a professional, in fact I believe I said in the description something like it was my attempt with minimal tools. You have a nice day now.
@@Roboticpycotic seriously? "... But posting it to youtube may imply it was done professionally and to code...." Blarney and bunkum! You're setting up your own aunt sally and knocking it down. Where in RU-vid's 'Terms and Conditions of Use' is the edict about things being done 'professionally and to code'? If he can tap the bearing in using a centre punch or cold chisel without chipping or distortion, well done! Yes, using the old bearing reduces the chances of damage. He slogs copious amounts of grease in the right places but evidently there is some professional way to do that as well! After a couple thousand revolutions I suppose the M.O.T engineers can take the wheel off and prove he erred, right? Your analogy about the electrical panel is balderdash! you're clearly not a LICENSED electrician. So you can wire panels all year, you'd never get a supply connected under your name as the sparkie. You probably COULD do an 'ok' job. But how would you know?
@@jackjohnson9989 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mubgjGXyntg.html Thats how to pack a bearing. To set bearing preload: well I'm not going to bother writing it out here but if its not done properly it will reduce bearing life by 20% at least. Ok Its just a Tercel I get it, it's actually a decent job he did. Its just the fact that he is so self satisfied that he decided to post it to RU-vid, yet there is no desire to think hmmm could I make sure what I am doing is technically correct first before I post. Sorry I'm ocd I just hate sloppy people.
