Toyota has confirmed they are looking into producing an all-new compact pickup truck. It is believed the truck may be called, "Stout". The Toyota Stout would compete with the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz pickup trucks.
@Chaumander Like I said it'll depend on your location. I am in Hawaii and we have some of the highest prices for vehicles and a friend of a friend bought a Maverick for 27k. Judging by that, I would assume other locations would cost less.
@Rob bor 27k is 25% above MSRP. Look up car max, kbb, local dealer's websites, etc. Dealerships are having mavericks at 35k a full 40% above MSRP. And thats generous. Other more expensive cars and trucks in more premium brands are same. Its a "free market". Remember that has not changed.
Only because people CHOOSE to pay those higher prices. If people held their ground and walked away from bad deals, things would change. But until then, dealers will continue to push the boundaries until the market breaks which is upon us.
@@macm6462 exactly i told him I'm going to be talking to other dealers because I won't pay over msrp which he was saying they charge 3k over. He's like if you commit today with a deposit I'll sell it to you for msrp. I was like deal.
Toyota... wanna really do something amazing? Make a full size truck, give it power and towing, and 4x4, but... here's the difference... DON'T MAKE IT A LUXURY TRUCK. And sell it for 40k. You'll win the market overnight.
Dude I totally agree. Everytime I bring up the stupidity in the Tundra I get all the fan boys riled up and rushing to defend it. I absolutely hate the Tundra and every generation of engine it has had. None of them were powerful, produced good fuel economy, were easy to work on, reliability was questionable, payload is almost always the worst out of the lineup, and rust has always been an issue with them. I wish they would've sold their 70 series in the US like they do in Australia but they won't sell us their cool stuff.
30 years ago, stuff got built and moved before trucks became 4 door luxury monsters with 1,000 pound feet of torque. Campers didn't need 20,000 pound trailers to get away from it all. We have bloated ourselves into truck and RV oblivion. It is good to see a segment of the market coming to it's senses.
i know you posted this 11 months ago. things have changed now. dealers are selling! people like me are downsizing. i leased a car with an MSRP of 57K, now im considering a nissan versa for 17k. if the majority like me are sick of payments we might see a major shift in cheap cars.
I think if these companies actually listened to what their customers want, they would have figured out by now that a small pick up is what we’ve always wanted, no surprise to me they’re selling so well, it’s what we’ve always wanted !
The beds are too small in these new small trucks. They are useless. They are missing out on the youth market. A six foot bed is functional for carrying lumber, plywood, surfboards and yard waste. I have a 2004 Toyota Tacoma single cab with a six foot bed and am asked all the time if I want to sell it. These are kids that are wanting my truck. One that is not too expensive..... The youth market can't afford a $40k truck...
So happy to see that smaller trucks are finally making a come back. Full sized trucks are not for everybody & they are very pricey. I remember growing up in the 1980's. My dad was a bricklayer and he owned a chevy luv pickup truck. It was plenty of truck to haul all his needed tools to each jobsite and we often performed side jobs on weekends with it too. 😊
I remember buying my brand new Toyota 4x4 truck back in 1983. It was fully loaded, had the SR5 package, chrome package, and also an aftermarket fiberglass camper shell. It was just barely under $14,000 out the door, including tax, license and registration fees. Boy, those were the days.
Be careful saying a new car cost $14k in the 80s. People today think that everything was cheaper back then.🤣 Like, why didn't you buy 2 for that price 🤷♂. But seriously, yes you did get more for your money. Vehicles in the 70-90's had a bit more value. Today's inflation doesn't add any value, just a higher price tag.
@@kross1261 Well, inflation has increased costs but we can't forget that wages have not increased at the same rate. The average worker had a lot more disposable income back then compared to the average worker today.
@TheNynax my valu meal was the same price as the minimum wage. Today no different. Most start a job at $11or $12 per hour. What's the price of a value meal? Give me a break
Toyota just needs to remember the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) Rule. Already with the Maverick Ford is heading down the path as with all the other trucks. With adding more options, and people wanting bigger engines and better off-road capability. I want a small, inexpensive, basic pavement pounder that I don’t have to lift what I’m loading to my chest to put in the bed.
Better off road capability? Please tell me where this fantasy land exists, (other than advertising commercials) There is not a square inch of land that is not private or public and your SUV's are not welcome on either.
@@mikehalling8046 Idk, in the commercials they show them driving over big rocks in the desert and behind waterfalls. That must be what people do with them lol.
I’m so happy to see Toyota bringing in a new compact truck. That’s dope. What else excites me is the fact that they’ll definitely consider a rugged body-on-frame compact. If they did that, I’m definitely gonna put in an order for the Stout 🔥
Would not be a Compact truck but a much cheaper version of the HiLux for emerging markets I really do not think again to make anything like the proposed stout
Make it a regular cab long box 4x4 with the shifter on the floor and lock out hubs with a manual transmission and keep the big tech out i think they would sell quite well.
I have never been so excited about a possible small truck from Toyota. My 1st vehicle was a small regular cab, not extended cab & not extra cab but just regular. It could seat 2 people comfortably & that’s all I needed. I loved that truck….
i am happy to hear the compact or mono trucks are making a comeback. however i would prefer a regular cab and 6 ft bed to make it more useful to rural area buyers.
Toyota took a perfectly good compact pickup truck and increased it in size and in cost and it's not ideal for most people looking for a small size, reliable truck that they can drive for 200K miles with 4WD. My old 1989 truck was great in fuel economy and reliability. I owned it for 25 years, and I'd buy another one and trade in my 2021 Tacoma.
I’ve got a 2004 Tacoma pre-runner. I love my small pickup that I can drive on those scary single tracks in the mountains if Idaho! I would trade it in for a new one if the new one has a narrow wheelbase like the one I have.
I grew up driving Chevy S-10s. I bought a 2017 GMC Canyon and wished there was something smaller. Happy to see Toyota bringing it back. Hopefully GM will follow.
We had 2 S10s and then a 2011 Colorado it was least reliable vehicle we ever bought Then we bought two 2013 Silverado’s a 2014 Silverado and a 2018 Silverado The Silverado’s are all reliable despite what that idiot Scotty Kilmer says about Chevy
Tbh, I think the Stout will look like the little brother to the Tacoma, similarly to how the Tacoma looks like the little brother to the Tundra, and how the Maverick looks like the little brother to the Ranger
these new small trucks have too small of a bed. You need a six foot bed for lumber, plywood, surfboards and yard waste. The 1995 to 2004 Toyota Tacoma's were the best size trucks. Especially for the youth market that can't afford a $40k plus truck.
Now this would be a truck I could afford. Trucks are selling for incredible amounts of dollars. If Toyota builds this, I will buy it immediately. I am waiting now.
Honestly I’m fixated to get the new Tacoma but if this Stout actually happens then I’m more than willing to trade the Tacoma in for it. However, Stout rumors have been happening since 2020
I dont like unibodies at all in trucks. Thdy have to try so hard not to make them look ugly and still suck at it. Makes me want to go build my own but that sucks to do also. I dont have that kind of money
@@MACFORD88 : Horse caca...there is literally one Toyota motor to avoid: 2AZFE. If you buy a Honda with a standard transmission, it will never die. The ultimate vehicle would have a Honda motor and Toyota / Aisin transmission. It would never die. Meanwhile the Big Three are still building garbage. Once the Boomers die off, so will those 3 brands.
It's about damn time compact trucks came back!! Not everyone is super wealthy and can afford these giant and midsized trucks and all the gas they waste.
I just need a small compact truck for picking up mulch, taking trash to the landfill and occasionally moving furniture. Was considering the Ford Maverick but would much prefer a Toyota option given their vehicle's history of reliability.
The whole thing manufacturers miss is that it's not cost alone that people don't like about full size. A smaller, more manageable (easier to park & maneuver) truck is more enjoyable to drive for many people. Not all of us are over 6' 250 lbs. Average male height in U.S. is 5'9" .
The conventional full size trucks get poor fuel mileage, and everything on them costs more. For example, premium tires will run you well over $200 each plus installation, and maybe you'll need new TPMS sensors at $65 a pop times four or five. Then there are the outrageous insurance premiums you get to pay for your $50 K truck.
If the price is right, I’ll be interested. Our family has been driving around a 2005 Corolla and it’s still going strong just like the day it was purchased.
And it won't sell. Dealers are in panic mode right now because they bought their inventory expecting to be able to mark up a lot. It worked for the past 2 years, it isn't working anymore. Inventories are increasing and customers aren't buying. Discounts will be back by the end of the year. Perhaps a lot of dealers will be bankrupt by the end of the year as well.
I'm on my third Ford Ranger; a low mile 2010 4x4 Sport w/ 5spd. 4.0. Excellent garage kept condition w/42k miles when I bought it three years ago. Sitting at 57k miles now, it is worth more than I paid then.
The Hilux SRV is very popular in South America, and mostly due to its reliability. Toyota would probably change its interior if it were to sell it in the US, but believe me: it would please many people as it is.
Compact trucks were relatively common in the 80s and 90s, until most of them were phased out and everything kept growing in size (and SUVs/Crossovers starting replacing sedans). Trucks like the original Ford Ranger and Chevy S-10/GMC S-15 were often found as fleet vehicles for delivery companies or for people who just wanted a cheap utility car, since you could buy those for $12,000. They weren't high tech, fast or powerful, but were affordable, simple transportation that was also pretty reliable and easy to run.
More than relatively, they WERE common. In fact there was no such thing as a luxury pickup. Even the F-150 was basically a 2 door pickup. But you pretty much hit the nail on the head.
I'll say it once and I'll say it again. We ain't gonna see this thing if it's built until mid to late 2024-2025 auto makers are slow to this much needed vehicle segment
Just a bit of a correction: The Ford Ranger and Chevy Colorado were not fully discontinued. They only left North America for a brief period in the 2010s. The T6 Ford Ranger (the most recent generation) was conceived by Ford Australia in 2011 and sold worldwide (minus North American markets until 2019). The Chevrolet Colorado was in a similar situation, except it returned only after 2 years of discontinuation.
MY 63 RANCHERO IS ONE OFTHE 1ST COMPACT PICKUPS, IT WAS $1932 ON THE WINDOW STICKER, IT JUST TURNED 60 YRS OLD, IT HAS 206,000 MILES ON THE ODO, STILL RUNS LIKE NEW. I THINK I'LL KEEP IT. EVERYONE LOVES IT. THE LITTLE 260 ENGINES SOUNDS GREAT. FORD BUILDS TOUGH TRUCKS.
In the Caribbean in the 70's and early 80's we had the Hilux and the Stout which was bigger. I remember the stout having a step built onto it so we could climb into the back as passengers. The stout was also rarer because it was more expensive.
smaller cheaper trucks are coming out because not everyone can afford a truck for $40000 - $60000. It is crazy price considering that pickup trucks are usually cheaper than 4x4 or jeep. and with dealer's markups adds damage to customer.
ive been in the car business for 20 years and it made absolutely no sense for manufacturers to stop making small trucks like the s10 , ranger and original tacoma. Alot of people love the small trucks to be able to reach into the bed , carry mulch, pool supplies etc. I had the toyota sr5, actually 3 of them and loved them. Would have bought another but the prices they were charging was the same price as the full size and the gas mileage was the same. Stop making the truck to tow with cause that is what kills the mpg. Make a simple truck, we dont need four doors since no one ever sits in the back of them, just make a regular cab but make the bed where you can put a sheet of plywood between the wheel wells, and keep the price down and you will not be able to make enough of them.
From what I understand, it all came down to the CAFE standards. MPG requirements keep increasing every year, so each new model gets a bigger and bigger footprint and a smaller engine to avoid paying the associated fines.
Looking fwd to Toyota, as it will most likely be built in US, unlike ford's maverick. Now give me extended cab, with half size rear doors with 4X4, I'd be really interested.
All Toyota has to do is bring back the Generation 1 Tacoma. It was the perfect small pickup. Make it available in standard cab or extended cab, with 4 wheel drive, V6 or Inline 4 cylinder engine. And please make it a 6 ft bed.
please release this truck already. I can't find any Mavericks reasonably priced, and I'd like to stick with Toyota but need something bigger than my Prius that also rides a little higher off the ground to deal with our Missouri (often gravel) roads.
@@milleniallgt9715 and i tried to order mine to secure msrp. Pshh yea right. 2 dealers kept giving me the run around that it would be ordered. It never went through and then the order banks closed.
they want to spec you up as high as possible. wouldn't surprise me if the hybrid was locked into the highest trim with the biggest wheels, touchscreen 23 speakers 12 cameras, you get the idea. and the base will be elusive at best
I’m super happy about this for the old school small compact owners (guys & ladies) of the old days, essentially going back to the roots affordable compact trucks. Compact trucks essentially lost there way imo! What used to be a compact truck has turned into a FatPack truck that costs as much as a full sized truck, causing full sized trucks to evolve into a Hog-Size truck you can barely fit anywhere on a trail .
Full size tricks these days are massive, too large if you can remember back to the F100 and the C100 pickups built up until the late 1950’s or early 1970’s. they do need to build a small pickup like the old Toyotas, Datsuns and Courier as most of the trucks on the road today seldom if ever see a payload in the box.
I really hope Toyota does come out with a new small pickup, but I seriously doubt Toyota will be selling it at only $20k, cheaper than a Ford Maverick which currently starts at around $23k with destination charge. In the rendering shown, it's clearly a Ford Maverick with a Toyota face grafted on.
The current giant-sized trucks are just for feel good, 'never had had to dirty their hands in their lives' brigade. Honest, practical and down to earth is just what is wanted.
Please Toyota bring back the Stout, this is what people NEED! Ford cannot keep up with the demand, what does the tell you. During these hard economic times we need a small truck like this. I'll buy one at a heart beat! Put in my order!!
Where I live, there are large trucks everywhere! Lift kits galore! I’m so sick of it. I was at the hardware store the other day, and there was this guy loading up some lumber on his lifted Tacoma. And he had a hard time securing it too. I’m ready for the small truck to come back. The Maverick is still hard to get where I live. Patiently waiting for Toyota Stout or whatever it’s going to be called.
The Maverick is in high demand is not because it's a great truck.... it's because the American people can't afford anything else on the market..... Toyota Tacoma is now cost $50,000.... a Ford F150 now in the $70,000, and price is not that low for the Ram truck too....
I love the F-150 but the things have so many features now they cost a fortune and I can no longer afford one. I am still driving a 1998 F-150 that I paid $14,000 for new. It had a radio, an AC, and a steering wheel and not much else. I wish someone still made a quality, no frills basic work truck. I don't need cameras, power seats, heated seats, power windows, or a bidet in my truck. 🌵🌵🌵
I have been waiting 20 years for Toyota to bring the Hilux to the US. Never happening it looks like. I will have to rename it the Noluk. I hate even seeing pictures of it now in Australia and elsewhere.
@@TroyEdinSammyWinchester82 what sells in the US has no relevance to Global sales. Globally Pickup Trucks are getting bigger and more luxurious, not smaller. Small vans do what a Maverick does outside NA
Yep, some put in an order and wound up paying 10-20k over MSRP. Pipe dream, just a pipe dream. You can saturate the market with large trucks only so much. Anyway, what's with the large trucks? Just to go grocery shopping down the street? Expensive.
I think it would be stretch for Toyota to this . Although everything is already there to do this such as platform and mechanicals. Body panels are inexpensive but if this would be brought to market it would be at least two more years out also given the fact that it wouldn’t be launched too close to the new Tacoma.
No such thing, it will sell $7-12,000 over MSRP. The only way to get a Maverick was a canceled special order. Then the dealer adds 10k to the price. Should be illegal.
Why does the Maverick cut into Rav4 sales. Reason it will cut into all small SUV sales. The small SUVs are no longer as functional as they used to be. Look in the back seat of all of them. The seats are all the same. The back seats are not functional. No dif. than sedans. So, unless small SUV manufacturers make the small SUVs more functional people are going to go to small trucks.
I have always loved tacomas, there awesome pickups but I'm 6'2, 265 lbs. I own a tundra for that reason. I think toyota could beef up the tundra to pull heavier loads. Then make an engine that runs off of hydrogen or something. They can do it people l, the reason they won't is patents, sheer greed.
Glad they finally realized that some of us just want a truck incase we buy a TV or a dishwasher and just wanna throw it in the bed and go home. We don't need a large "work truck". Also, there really needs to be more options for sub $20k that doesn't suck. Not all of us are rich or have spouses for 2nd incomes . . can't believe Chevy and GM don't have a Maverick competitor
no thanks.... my 96 GMC Sonoma extra cab does all i need... seats four in a pinch and has a bed for stuff... btw this is not a compact truck.... more like midsize at best
The underlying premise of this video is wrong. People aren't looking for a compact truck there looking for an affordable truck. It's sad that this is their only option.
Most people need a truck to do regular hauling. I don't see how people can spend 50K+ on a truck. Even used ones command a crazy price. With today's gas prices not going down anytime soon something that gets respectable mileage is a plus.
Please do make this truck Toyota because we are sooo sick of ford and all of their dealer bull crap. Make this trick without dealer markups and the public will flock to you because you already have an excellent reputation. Thanks Toyota!!!
I hope the new Stout looks tough, not like the Whimpy Maverick. A muscular looking front end and wide squared off front end rear wheel well sheet metal.
Toyotas are the best quality built, reliable vehicles on the planet. Honda is a very close 2nd. Japanese people take pride in their products they produce. 👍😊
I remember the "YO" Toyota trucks. I really miss those, because I think, while most people do want some ability to transport large items, don't need that much horsepower and probably use it to drive around town like a sedan most of the time.
These small trucks NEED a bigger bed. Especially if they wanna sell more of themm keep the cab the same size, extend the bed at least a foot and a half
$20k is not too bad, but the STEALERS are the problem currently. Are they going to try to mark this truck up with ridiculous BS? I wouldn't hold my breath. So $20k becomes $30k plus. If that's the case, I would NEVER buy one new.
