There's been plenty of 'noise' about the potential for a Toyota smaller truck, a revival of the Stout. But most of it has been pure guesswork, so I dug in and found out what Toyota's really, truly said about a future truck beneath the Tacoma, and it's not much!
I just want a Ranchero based on the 2024 Mustang. (not SUV). keep it two door, same height, 6 foot bed, and manual transmission....keep it RWD....you can loose the back seats, I do not care about them.
Thank you! After doing my own research and figuring out there was literally zero claims by Toyota of them actively building this other than some vague statements by executives I was fed up with all the AI created bogus videos offering every detail of the truck lol.
Super refreshing to hear someone saying we know nothing. All the "The Stout *could* have... ...and might be..."-type content that came out once people got wind of it drove me up the wall. Baseless speculation like this is sort of like clickbait in the sense of being bad behavior incentivized by modern media's need to have a constant stream of content.
I wish Toyota could do a small diesel engine again in the USA like they did in the 80's....Imagine getting 50 mph out of a new "Maverick" type Toyota with out heavy batteries or complex hybrid systems....... Great video!!!
@@DaddySizeIt Had a 94 Ranger that I sold with 300,000 miles on it and still running. 4 banger, 5 speed stick. The 300,000 miles and still running is a EPA/CAFE no no. If it had a diesel that would be even worse. Plus lasts too long. Diesel bad. make noise. make exhaust. No diesel for you. get out the truck store. don't come back. Next please. electric yes. have many choices. can I make that a 30 year loan?
I appreciate the factual news of the Stout. I’m sick of these, “This new Toyota compact pickup means the end of the Maverick!” All just vapor ware so far. Thanks!
What does “space” below the Tacoma actually mean? What is the primary niche? An off trail beater? A general purpose suburb vehicle to pickup livestock food and drop off garbage? A trailer hauler? A work truck? A show truck? Something that fits in a garage? Everyone keeps comparing this to the Maverick and Santa Cruz but the Ridgeline should also be in this bunch as the original unibody truck. And since American full size trucks are cheaper than the Honda, and can do more in every category except fit in small spaces, the lesson learned is that it has to be priced substantially cheaper.
Thanks for this honest fact based assessment Jon. I do think the longer Toyota waits to bring this compact pickup to market, they will be losing on opportunity to capitalize on Fords production capacity problems with the Mavericks as well as recalls and QC issues.
Those aren't legitimate production problems. They're choosing not to make more of them. Look at how many f-150s are sitting on lots right now and how much trouble they're having to sell extremely high priced pickups. There's a massive push internally not to cannibalize the sale of Ford rangers with Mavericks. Thus, even though they can Make more Mavericks they are choosing not to allocate resources that direction in order to try. And maintain sales of higher profit vehicles.
@@dwaynewindham2937Exactly. The F150 especially at the higher trim levels has huge profit margins. Ford is choosing to prioritize that over lower margin Mavericks. I think it's a mistake. The Maverick especially at the lower level MSRP would have been a game changer in market share. It's the perfect vehicle for a lot of Americans especially at that price point.
I don't know about the rest of you, watching here, like me, but I like this artist's rendering from 4:49-4:53 the best of the Toyota Stout. The styling fits the name, wish that I could see the rear styling. Thanks for the updates, no one really knows for sure yet. I do remember back in very late 1994, or early 1995, before the Toyota tacoma pick came out, I saw an undisguised version of it on a street in the Hollywood Hills (Laurel Canyon) area of Los Angeles. I even went to a Toyota dealership, and told them that I had seen this Toyota truck parked on the street, named "tacoma", and they looked at me real funny, like I was imaging it, as they said at that time, that they had no information at all about a newly redesigned Toyota truck. I am a car guy, and I KNOW what I saw. Lo, and behold, within about 3-4 months later, the newly redesigned Toyota tacoma pick up came out, confirming what I saw parked on the street, undisguised. Keep your eyes open, you may soon see the new Stout being test driven around somewhere, before it goes on sale! Back then, we didn't have cameras on cell phones, so if you see one, take a pic of it, like I wish that I did, of the pre-existing tacoma truck!
Remember, you can't beat something with nothing. 2026 Toyota Stout? It might be great but the Maverick will have been eating on the small truck segment for five years. Toyota will be fighting everyone else for the leftovers.
Thanks. I tried. Stay tuned for my video next week where I proclaim "New Toyota Stout Will DESTROY The Maverick In 2024!" (just kidding, I won't do that)
Jon, thank you for letting us know the facts here. I personally thought that Toyota would take the RAV4 and make a pickup truck out of it. If Scion was still around, this would have been a great pickup truck for that brand. Young people would have loved it.
Morning! You're welcome, I also thought it would be based off the RAV4 platform until I started digging in. A bit surprised it was off the smaller Corolla Cross but that makes me more optimisitic they'll be in that mid-20s? Here's hoping!
As someone who owned a Scion (TC) they shot themselves in the foot with the first gen Xb. No one liked that car or took it seriously and everyone associated the brand with that car. So no, people of all ages didn't like Scion which is why the brand was killed.
@@666cemetaryslut Really? I actually would love to have that first generation Scion xB. It's tall enough for me to not be bumping my head all the time. I can have the engine tuned for more power. I may be in the minority but I want that first Scion xB as my daily driver.
Jon I thought with all the videos on the Stout it was a done deal coming out sometime in late 2024. Toyota should be paying attention to the demand for the Maverick and coming out with their own compact truck. There have been similar videos on bringing the Chevy Montana to the US and the Ram Rampage both made in South America and even a video on a new Subaru compact truck. The auto manufacturers should be paying attention to this market segment it is wide open for more competition. True the profit margins are not as great as the full size trucks but full size trucks are not selling as well with higher prices, rising fuel costs, and rising interest rates. Having owned 5 pickups previously to my Maverick one a full size and one a 4x4 crewcab midsize (which was about the size of a 90s full size pickup) a compact pickup more than meets my current needs. The American auto industry still has the same mindset that buyers can be up sold to a larger vehicle whether they need it or want it. Also the CAFE standards favor the larger truck like vehicles. I loved my first compact pickup a 85 MItsubishi MIghty Max and my 99 S-10 extended cab which I had for over 20 years was a perfect size and I did use the beds of both those trucks a lot for hauling. I have used the bed of the Maverick as well and yes I would have liked another foot on the length of the bed but I like everything else about it and I have managed to make the bed work for me. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for the kind words and the comment. I find it interesting the parallels between the 60s/70s and today, where the industry keeps pushing larger and more expensive cars. Back then they'd say if someone wanted cheaper, they'd buy used. Well son of a gun if I didn't read that the other week in an article, that with few 'affordable' options, people are being increasingly pushed to used cars (but of course that market stinks right now too). There is always another economic correction to come, and I'm afraid for the US brands.
We know a few things for certain , It will dribbled out one at a time to stupidly high mark ups and add ons ,and the suckers will stand in line to buy it
You say speculation, I say "Click Bait". The Stout story is real nice way to identify fake RU-vid channels. If there is only voiceover nonsense, you can count on them being almost AI generated click-bait channels, perhaps with fake subscribers and quirky things to game the algorithm.
Thank you so much for this video Jon. I had first seen an article with the photo of the Stout you used in your thumbnail and also got very interested in learning more. I basically came to the same conclusion as you and was disappointed to find that everything was just speculation. I really hope Toyota does this and hopefully it will look very similar to the photoshopped image using the front end styling from the Compact Cruiser concept. I can see Toyota using the RAV4 platform with the 2.5L hybrid system. I just hope the price is right and there is no turbo.
You're welcome. What we know right now is they'll be using the smaller Corolla Cross platform as a basis, and that increases the chances that price will be in the mid-20s
@@AllCarswithJon You're welcome Jon. Yeah, I had seen that in your video. I think Toyota can still hit their target on the RAV4 platform. It seems to be more inline with the size of the Maverick, but I guess either would work.
@@drewchristy Let's face it. I almost don't care what platform they use, just come out with a competitor! :) Also I reread your first comment and I need to clarify - the article you read with the picture I used in my thumbnail? My thumbnail is 100% my own skilled photo-cropping ability. (You'll notice the front and rears are different colors! :) LOL
True about the platform... I was referring to the front end from the Compact Cruiser concept (like you used in your thumbnail) as there are many different ideas on what the Stout could look like. I think the article I read was from Hotcars.
@@nickiemcnichols5397 think how good a full electric Tacoma would sell right now. They should throw a battery pack in all existing Toyota models. Flat floor them with a new floor pan.
Some actual digging. Thanks. Just took off a vid that was talking about the stout and had just random trucks and even ford workers, all while doing a voice over. Garbage. Again thank you
The yellow and blue rendering from carbuzz looks awesome. If they come out with that with a 5 or 6 speed and all wheel drive or a 4x4 I will definitely buy it.
I've taken to calling them passenger trucks b/c they're meant to haul people and not cargo. A pickup truck should be a two-door truck w/ a 6' bed at a minimum. I also really dislike the 4-door "trucks"
There still really isn't a compact pickup truck in America due to CAFE. Companies get fined if the vehicle is too small. They won't get fined if the vehicle is larger but achieves a couple mpg less.
Combination of Small(ish)+Low price (initial mavertick msrp) & most importantly HYBRID to me is THE perfect combination of must for me to spend the money during these tough economy. Like you have said... I want it very simple, basic base model.
I saw u-tube adds suggesting a $15,000 Stout about 6 months ago. I was excited as I could buy something in that price range. I'm so disappointed that now we're talking nearly double that. What the public wants is a good little truck with a hybrid package for economy with ac and a decent am FM sound system. Forget plush carpet, stupid high cost too bright head lights, electronic system that distract from driving. I've got a good phone and a Garman. I don't need your overpriced multi function crap.
I have said it before...If it's not body on frame, I'm not interested. A unibody would be terrible. Just my opinion and for my intended use. For anyone needing a Japanese El camino....sure...why not?
I kinda have a goal in my life to own as many different types of cars as possible. Mostly refering to the body styles. Have had two body on frame SUVs, a sedan, and now a subcompact hatchback. I would like to try a truck out but honestly dont really need one besides for bikes and kayaks. But something like the Maverick or Stout would be up my alley.
I remember not that long ago some auto journalists were lamenting on Toyota’s discontinuation of the LC. Just this week the new LC was shown so Toyota appears to be good at keeping things secret.
How dare you bring logic and clarity to this topic. HOW DARE YOU SIR!!! (Thank you for this. So tired of all the computer generated crap on this topic.)
I apologize. I will only release AI generated videos with synthesized voice overs in the future, based purely on guesswork. 😀 But seriously, I had so many comments about the Stout I went searching for information and all i found were videos as you described. Decided to do actual research and find out. Imagine that.
Thanks for breaking my heart Jerk! :). I have an 03 Tundra with 300k miles and when she finally goes, I will replace it with another Toyo. (why would I switch when the Tundra has shown me that Toyo is great?). I am hoping it lasts long enough for the Stout to come out. I can't stand how BIG trucks have ebcome over the years. The Tacoma is way bigger than my Tundra.. I hope Toyo beats youe expectations and has it out by 2025.. Thanks for the truth though it hurts
Sorry! I made this video because of how many really bad videos out there talk about what could be for the stout, but there’s actually very little official info from Toyota. Perhaps you can get your “fix” for good news from one of those videos that lie? 😀
I personally never see Stout happening. I will say this however,. Mitsubishi has stated that if they could a way with alliance partner Nissan to make it happen they would love to sell a Maverick competitor in the United States. A vehicle like this by Mitsubishi could make them relevant again and capture a niche market. Hope they can make it happen somehow someway.
I wonder what platform they'd use as a base.... that's an interesting idea for them. This is exactly what's needed, a hungry brand who's willing to give up incremental profit to feed a need in the marketplace. I like this idea.
By my understanding they would use the current platform and running gear from the Rogue and Outlander and possibly build it in Japan but the chicken tax is the biggest issue in the way. Higher ups are pushing for the business case to make it happen in North America. If they could bring this to market and a replacement for the aging Outlander Sport it could make them relevant again. A great replacement for the latter would be XFC concept which goes on sale soon in the Asian rim.
Jon, look up Toyota Town Ace/Lite Ac truck. It is smaller than Tacoma, like Ford Maverick size but unlike the Ford Maverick it is proper body on frame rear wheel drive. They sell in third world countries. It is not one of those UTV sized JDM Kei truck either it is a proper sized car. It has only around a 100hp though. They could probably make this the Toyota Scout.
Thanks for this information. I am perplexed that Toyota makes noise about this vehicle 6 months ago....today, no concrete information and plans, just Marketing. Realistically, 2 more years? Using the Corolla Cross as the base? TPM has been pushed by every Fortune 500 Company as one possible way to get products to market faster. The Sensei can't do it themselves.
Reasonable assumption. If Toyota is reading this please also offer this compact truck with an all ev option as well please. My spec would be dual motor awd, crew cab with 250-300 miles of range. I use a 22 bolt EUV now as my daily and would gladly trade it in.
@@viper2148 It’s better than you think, this summer I have been getting 275-285 miles of range, holds more cargo since it’s the EUV, has cooled seats for summer time and heated seats and steering wheel for winter. I just want a dual motor awd since I live in Colorado and I would like compact truck for Home Depot runs.
The only two-wheel drive I would want would be front wheel drive. I bet I'm not the only Boomer who is tired of hearing about these new "affordable" trucks and will just forget about them and buy a used truck. Many of us will be dead when the trucks finally show up...and cost way more than promised.
Yes, start out just like the Maverick did and dress it up later. If they wait too long to launch, they’ll miss the opportunity. 90% of pickup owners never really use the carrying capacity nor actually NEED a pickup, yet a small pickup with four doors is where it’s at. The Maverick would have been the best vehicle Ford ever produced had it not been for the “chip shortage”.
The only thing that sucks about the Stout is this: The reason existing Toyota trucks last a long time is because they are body on frame, not unibodies. The Toyota stout being a unibody means it won't last as long and could jeopardize their reputation. Why won't Toyota just make a mini version of a body on frame small truck when designing the Stout? It's just a race to the bottom to build unibody crap.
the success of the stout i feel entirely depends on the visuals. If it looks like a truck, it'll succeed, and if it looks like a santa cruz, it'll fail.
After the third overly excited video about the stout, I realized that it was just wishful Trucking. Thank you for clearing this up the Corolla cross? That seems a bit small but who cares because it doesn’t exist anyway
The reason I haven’t gotten a maverick because there a no awe option with the hybrid engine. Also no plugin hybrid option, that would be nice if it was affordable.
If Toyota wants to compete against the Ford Maverick the Corolla Cross TNGA-C platform is way too small, however the RAV4 TNGA-K platform would work. I'm not saying there won't be buyers if Toyota goes with the smaller platform. I'm just saying I won't be one of them.
They can’t wait that long. To late to the party isn’t good. The base platform is there then it’s the body layout that needs development. If you got the tree just trim it out for Christmas 🎄 If not Christmas 2024 then a half year release date. The got the know how and the resources. They have never been lacking in will before so I’m hopeful the will.
I still believe that FORD should have revived the "Ford Courier" name for the "Small Truck" from the days... "Maverick was prone to the same fuel tanks problems that the Pinto had and was still a "car', not a pickup truck!
Bring back the small Body on Frame Hilux. We need a super cab small pickup like the old Hilux, Ford Ranger, etc. We mainly use our 11 Ranger super cab 4WD pickup with a 6’ bed. A cheap Unibody cannot handle the work of a body on frame
Regardless if Toyota ever releases the Stout, I will NOT pay the exorbitant dealer overcharges like Ford dealers are charging on Mavericks. Sorry, but I am not paying over 30K for a tiny hybrid FWD pickup. I will continue to deal with the hassle of using by utility trailer over giving a sleazy car dealer one red cent more than they should get.
Kids you want a small truck. Buy a used Ranger or Toyota Tacoma for $4000...put $3000 in a repair, refresh, rebuild Real truck...$7000...$200000 less than a FWD car truck with a 4' bed.
Maybe. I want a compact pickup because I miss the old S10s. I thought about rebuilding one but it'll cost me more than $3000 because I don't have a shop to do it myself. Everything needs replaced on any of those at this point. There's two other things that pour water on that idea for me, adaptive cruise control and crew cabs. Adaptive cruise is the first new tech I've seen in decades that I find useful. And I never realized I needed a crew cab until every truck had it. Extended cab was the best you got on an old S10. Consider how expensive the used market is now... and it all boils down to buying a 2024 Tacoma as the best option for me.
@@DaddySizeIt it is still far less expensive than a new "truck" and will have a longer bed. Don't always get maneuvered into the current fad...hyped on YT. Anything good you buy will be mostly fine. You might need suspension work, new seats (you can install those) or reupholstery after 200k butt in seat and some light engine work like gaskets or an AC repair. That can be easily estimated by your mechanic you take the potential buy to have checked for purchase. Total price for not getting ripped off is likely 7 to 8k. A quarter of what you'll pay for the trendy short beds.
@@DaddySizeIt a 24 Tacoma is an F150 size from 20 years back and is a real frame truck with RWD...so it is not like the choice of a city ute like a Maverick or Santa Cruze priced at 30k. Keep it for 35 to 40 years and you'll get you money's worth. $1000 a year of use or you're just buying fashion....not utility.
