I'd still take the Alpine. It's such a unique car and you want it to feel special. Also the fun and pure factor of the car is very appealing in the sea of electronic gadgetry etc.

I had the same decision between the Cayman T or M2c... in the end i chose the M2c for many reasons. The angry and aggression of the m2 made it so much more enjoyable over the cayman. I felt special in the cayman, but it just lacked that aggression.

Andy Bettencourt No lap time because the M2 comp didn’t make it on top. I finally know the reason of the missing lap time, the last couple days, people from the US & Canada brought their Supra to the track, and the 2020 GR Supra beat the M2 comp in a back to back dog flight, as well as cayman s 981 and 991 C4S lap time. (You can search those video on RU-vid) W Most likely because the Supra lap time was too good to be shown. Auto car are Bmw fan boy.

I wish there were timed laps, but regardless I'd choose the Alpine. I like its light weight and fun factor over power and pure perfomance approach and the retro desing. Also, unlike the 718, the 4-cylinder fits with its character in my opinion

Lucian I have unfortunately never driven one but my last car was a gt86 and the manual box just helped make it so involving! Surely I wouldn’t have loved it as much as I did with a dct... I’m sure the Alpine is a really great car as it is, just think it could’ve been even better with a nice manual. It doesn’t even have the 991 gt3 argument of being so fast that you’re glad you get to keep both hands on the wheel all the time... I’m really happy they went ahead and built the Alpine but these things are made (ok a little bit for the image factor but mostly) to make money! And I’d like to give them some of mine for having the guts to do it and do it properly but the lack of a stick and a 3rd pedal really breaks it for me... Porsche went back on it when the gt3 came out as pdk only, I hope Alpine have the courage to do the same!

@@nunobandeira1811 I had the GT86 followed by an Elise S2 but the Alpine is an absolute joy. I totally agree with your thoughts on manual driving, but, for me - and for every other tester on YT, they don't miss a manual at all. I urge you to have a test drive.

Yes! Yes it was! Only true enthusiast can appreciate the way an e46 M3 sounds. I'm a fan of the s55, for a turbocharged car it still has that raspy tinny sound (like you said) I freaking love the way the m4 GTS sounds

I’ve had both and there’s no comparison, the E46 had a kind of tinny sound as it went through the power band, intoxicating. The M2 is a deep growl though the pops and bangs are kind of fun. I would love the M2 to sound like the E46, May an Akrapovic exhaust when it’s out of warranty.

I think that a lot of reviewers discount the 4c and the exige/elise just because they are so much less liveable than the big ones. They're so driver focused that you can't really daily them so the reviewers say "bah no one buys them, lets not bother"

Viet Phan Well, it is the reason, whether you believe me or not... Alpine focused on light weight over power for the A110 project and thus to save weight with the ability to have a central tunnel for lightweight components (an E-Handbrake for example) they opted for a DCT.

lmao its not destroyed, i had a 981 before i got my 718 and im actually very happy that i can easily pick up speed at any rpm on the highway. the older car struggled unless i downshifted a few gears on the highway.

Not to be biased, but what would the daily annoyance of the M2 be?. I recognize that this is not an easy choice or verdict - but perhaps follow up with a race driver in the seat for some hot laps. and on the other side bring on some luggage that would fit for a long weekend tour. It is kind of weird to judge these cars and include daily driving as a parameter when only being on the track - Then it should be about which one makes most fun/satisfaction on the track that determines the verdict. At least I´d like to see a follow up to this episode, whatever the theme would be. Daily Driving/living with, hot laps, acceleration. I´m sorry but this comparison review was a bit muddy waters overall.

Probably aesthetics, suspension, and a whopping 5hp increase allowing the Supra to run a slightly faster lap time. Toyota is too cheap and conservative. At the end of the day it's still a Toyota tuned Z4.

I got a 718 base Cayman MT but it does have a sports exhaust. Never had an older 6 cylinder one. Could never afford/justify the new 6 GT4 price so somewhat limited in choice. Looked at the M2, but wanted 2 seats only. Funnily enough though took my buddy for a test drive last week and he commented on how surprised he was that the engine/exhaust sounded so good. Im not sure these tests with the mic only picking up the inside noise is a true indication of the sound. I do like driving with the windows down though so I can hear more of the exhaust. Out of those 4, I'd still buy the Cayman. It's just a joy to drive, and the chassis, gearbox make it just a great place to be in all the time. I daily drive it through the summer.

Yeah it has the best engine of the 4. When buying a sports car, you also have to look at upgradeability, the m2 will get you over 500hp with just a tune

Car makers making cars like the Alpine needing us buyers to buy them to keep them building them: I absolutely love the thing and would love to have one BUT at more than 50K a car maker would have to give me much more than a tiny 1.8T 4 pot, an extra pedal and a much better build e.g. as it stands it is massively overpriced in my opinion a problem that has affected Lotus for donkey years. Sales will tell but as with Lotus it will probably remain an exotic rarity which will be the main reward for those who have and who will sink their dosh into this lightweight dough

I love Porsche but I would probably take the M2 comp out of this lot. More fun, practical etc. But real world I would pony up and look for a used GT4 or even a GTS with the flat 6 for around the same $.

The M2 is by far the best looking and probably the most useful as a daily driver. Love the Porsche's handling but I can't get into the look of it. Supra's Ok and the Alpine is too much of a weekend toy -very cool- but not for me.

I think it'd be so useful with so many of these reviews if we could also use a second hand example as a wild card option. Something that previously was perhaps levels above this type of field but over time is more equivalent. So for example, when reviewing a new Cayman, why not throw in a cheaper end Ferrari 360, a mid-priced 997 / 991 or the last edition R8 or M3 etc etc. Because that's what the average consumer is trying to weigh up, and those types of choices are out there. 👍

Have an M2 and looking at the Competition to replace it. I tried a 2.7 Cayman 4 years ago when changing from a 135 Coupe and was captivated by how good it was and although the engine didn’t have the grunt of the 135 it was still so much better, only the finance rate stopped me buying as well as some practicality, (it’s my daily). Fast forward an M235 and 2 years with a an M2 later and the engine in the Cayman I’ve just test driven was, for me, poor. Nowhere near my M2 and although chassis and steering were better a 200 mile blast across mid Wales later confirmed the M2 as a wonderful piece of kit and great fun. Next one will be an M2 comp, I just couldn’t live with that Porsche engine up and down the A1M. If it didn’t intrude in to the cabin so much I might be able to ignore it but the flat spot in lower revs is so frustrating after the M2.

I'd choose the Supra. I like the Alpine's agility, but Nordschleife lap times show that the Supra is 4 seconds faster than the A110.

I agree with the non verdict verdict and with the Porsche verdict xD. 5 years ago the Porsche had the great sounding n.a boxter engine soooo..... The cayman with proper sound would be the one that both of you would take as a sports car ! All day long :) Cheers

I agree, it's difficult to choose between them. If practicality is a real concern, then it has to be the M2 or the BMW Supra. The Porsche is probably the most expensive by far & kudos for its manual GB (the BMW also comes with a manual) but a 4-cylinder at this price point? The Alpine is beautifully minimalist, so it cannot be ignored either.

This is what irks me a bit with the previous Supra fanatics. The previous Supra was okay, it was a regular sports car with sport handling nothing special about it, until you tune it. That’s what made the Supra such a legend, The durability and power the Engine was able to hold and the tuning capabilities is what made the Supra such an amazing Car, sale with the GTR R34, my favorite Japanese sports car, but there wasn’t anything special about it till you Tuned it, besides the interiors in which both cars were made to look timeless, stock they weren’t anything special. What made those cars such legends was the fact of the power they produced while being tuned. The M2 and the new Supra come already tuned ready to race, and with a few mods your at a previous Supra ran or even higher. The B85 engine that new Supra has, has proved to even reach power beyond the M2 and that says a lot. In conclusion, both cars were made with different eras in mind. The OG was made to be modified from the bone up, while the new one has more efficient modifications and much of a sport setting, with extra mods making the same if not more power than the original one

I'm seriously considering trading my Fiesta ST for the M2C. Sadly America dosnt get the Alpine and I don't mind a harsh ride. The Cayman is good but having driven one I'm not sure I can live with that engine.

Nice review! Looks like there’s massive glare on the infotainment screen (the tablet mounted on the dash) on all of the cars. Seems like a horrible design flaw to not have a cowl around it (like there is for the tach and speedometer). Your thoughts?

Sad to see the supra reduced to this competition. Back in the day it was the skyline GTR. With Lexus being Toyotas posher vehicles and releasing the LFA i thought that was the perfect platform to give us the new supra.

Mk4 couldn't touch the gtr and wasn't even aimed for it and even the Japanese stated that the mk4 was a boat compared to the R34 at the time. And the LFA was a all out failure since it was too expensive and took too long for them to release it.

Great comparison video, and applause for not copping out at the end and saying they are all good for something (ie. not making a pick). What I suggest should be done, is bring value into the conversation. That way you can expand on the aforementioned conclusion of “they all do something well”, but the most value for your sports car dollar with the criteria of x, is y. Not sure what UK pricing is, but here in North America, there’s a large price difference between a Supra and Cayman/M2.

I purchased a Cayman over the A110. In A110 to adjust seat for my wife I must be on my knees and use spanner. Cayman has electric driver seat with memories, memory steering column and easy access driver seat. More space inside and in the boots. Heated seats, heated steering wheel etc. and same price as A110 with PDK, 20" wheels. It also has six airbags v two in A110. The Cayman is a daily driver for multiple people.

Hate it when journalists cop out and don't pick a car. How hard is it to say, if you want a paled back light weight car get the alpine, if you want something more practical with 2+2 seating get the M2, if you want great handling and a quality build get the Cayman and if you want something to do some mods or something different get the supra. Or anything along these lines.
