If i didnt say it before, this is a good vid, i totally understand the points you make about the IMT. Was wondering why Toyota did this. You made it make sense. thanks
@@JoseCancel6 the truck? Search Toyota inventory tracker. Go to the Toyota website and enter the spec youre looking for, and see where it is available. You can’t really order a Toyota, they just make them
I own 2024 tacoma with manual transmission and it shifts smooth as silk. Plenty of power. Also tacoma handles and turns very tight & solid . By far the best manual transmission i have ever driven.
Thank You! My husband and I never had any intention of trading off our 2021 SR automatic, but last time we had it serviced, a new 2024 manual off road GREY TACO was at the dealership and we drove it just while we were waiting 'for kicks'! Ha!!! We're waiting for OUR Supersonic Red Off Road to arrive any day...we're both 'manual trans truckees', and we ONLY drive RED!! We've settled for autos over the years, our last manual a Subaru Forester - so hard to find manuals - Can't Wait! This video really helped! And, by the way, we're retired farmers, both turning 75 this September. 😊GOTACO...
Nice video. I plan to buy a manual transmission Tacoma within the next 6 to 12 months. I drove a lot of stick-shift vehicles between 1975 and 2003 but haven't owned a manual in 20 years. Really looking forward to it! But, I am not "too proud" to admit that automated rev matching on down-shifts might be a really nice feature. I really like your comments about rev hang -- matches what I had figured out from other channels that if we just shift slowly it should be smooth.
Dave trust me, rev match downshifting is a tremendous feature to have at your disposal to flick on as you choose! Massive in scenarios where you just don’t want to heel toe!
That rev hang seems excessive! The whole reason I want a manual is because I want to drive a little spiritedly, not cruise around like grandpa heading to his Wednesday night Bingo.
@@MoneyShift Just because it wasn't in the past doesn't mean it couldn't have been with the 4th gen :) . There's no technical limitation, not asking physics defying technology here lol. But at the end of the day, I am still grateful Toyota is at least offering a manual at ALL.
@@officialyasir all fair points! It can be tuned out of other models so I’m holding on and having conversations with tuners to try to bring that to the Tacoma as well 🫡
I laughed for a good bit over the rev hang segment! My last 4 vehicles were manual most recently a 20 STI. Tuned all the rev hang out of that, but I don't plan on doing that to the Tacoma I just picked up. I really appreciated the "slow down; Let it marinate". Great video!
ok fine but then why is the rev hanging? back when efi was new they turned off the fuel cut off in the efi but they did this because they didn't understand how to setup their efi maps. This was bad because it only hid how bad their maps were but caused a lot of broken rings. they == GM. Toyota was probably last to adopt efi.
I appreciate your videos. Mine is coming in exactly 1 month. Can’t wait. Question. Can you go over the tow mode in the next video. That is the one thing I am most curious about. I understand we have the capability but I am wondering if there is a mode. I understand you can program different trailers but I was just curious before I received it. Obviously you know better than I do but our manuals don’t have the tow button on the 2024. Thanks again!
Superb information! Thank you. Not too many posts on the manual tranny. Up in the Great white north if I want a 5Ft bed in the sport I have to get a stick. Thanks Toyota Canada…Is it a comfortable unit to drive for a 5’4 person? Wondering on the clutch length and also if the shifter is in a comfortable reach? You seemed to have been at your arms reach going into 3rd. Thanks again,
Every manual I ever owned, I could take off without gas. That's how my dad thought me and how I thought my son. It really helps learning the feel of the clutch.
The comment here on my end was more that you could feel your way through the clutch to start with no problem. Often times with modern units the feel of the pedal is gone which makes it a bit harder. Agreed it really helps!
@@MoneyShift my last manual was a 2012 Xterra, which was still primitive. Haven't shifted anything newer. Hopefully the Tacoma 6M I ordered will be delivered and go back to having fun driving.
That’s the reason I don’t buy manuals anymore, they are not fun anymore due to the Rev Hang. I sold my last Civic SI due to Rev Hang within the first year.
Got rid of my ND2 Miata because of rev hang, and it was the best newer car as far as rev hang, but still too much for me. Give me a throttle cable any day.
Great video! A concern is resale on a manual in a population where almost no one will know how to drive it, or enjoy it as you pointed out.) I like shifting so will likely buy a manual anyway. IMT'? Just don't turn it on.
I have a 2003 Tundra base MT. 328k miles on her. I also have a 2020 TRD OR in MT as well. I have to save that I love the transmission on the Tundra much better. I find the clutch is much more responsive, but it is harder for an inexperienced driver to drive. I have 0-2” of roll back on a steep uphill incline, 2-6” on the Tacoma. Still love both trucks. I would kill to have a 5.7 MT Tundra.
I have Corolla 2017 Manual and the same problème with revhang im shifting slower 😢. I know there ist a way to Change that configuration i saw once on a youtube video but cannot fins it anymore sadly😢. Hey Toyota dont let the manual go!! The are made for real divers!! 😂
So on the Truck King review he blew up his clutch. His dad went from 5 to 1 according to Toyota. I just can't believe anyone would do that. Do you feel this transmission might make it easier to make that kind of catastrophic mistake?
Really great review, and your breadth of detail describing the various nuances was breath of fresh air compared to so many other reviews. In your experience with your 24 ' Tacoma have you been able to eclipse the EPA rating for fuel economy?
Thank you for such a clear and detailed manual Tacoma driving review! I daily commute a Mazda6 and would be interested in a manual Tacoma but none can be had within 200 miles of me to even give it a try. A bit frustrating. This reminds me that I didn't purchase a Crosstrek because of bad rev-hang + numb clutch + lack of power, which made it difficult to drive smoothly after years of driving manual. I still really appreciate a quality manual transmission done well in a car/truck and would like to give a Tacoma (TRD off road?) and that IMT feature a fair shot if only it was available. I don't want to have to order just to test-drive one.
Do you feel like the lower redline due to NVH was justified by Toyota? It's a really interesting choice how they made it redline nearly 1000rpm lower...the rev hang and the odd low redline can be addressed with tuning most likely. Just curious if you feel their reasoning of vibration was justified
Outstanding vids on the 2024 Tacoma. Very helpful to see reviews that are more than the usual walk arounds. Having had a 5 speed 1999 Dakota your demonstrations really helped to understand the technical improvements in this new truck. Thanks!
Great video, not sure if I missed it, but does anybody knows how responsive is acceleration, is there a lag and how bad? In relationship to automatic and also to previous generations.
Thank you for your information. All I wanted to know was, what Speeds, RPM's come with each Gear. Simple info, but I could not find it anywhere. God bless you. It took somebody that loves a Manual Trans, to tell those who like manual transmission, the info that is important to them. I am now a subscriber.
my 2004 mustang has rev hang... but not that much wow. And yeah the only way to not get a lurch is smooth and slow, its frustrating when you are trying to get moving quick.
Going to try slowing down my shifts on my 3rd gen. 9k miles in and I still have days where I almost regret buying the manual because of the rev hang. Then again I’m coming from 90s manuals so maybe that’s just ingrained in me
We need a 0-60 mph while slow rolling your shifting - video. What’s it like to go full throttle then back off gas as you approach red line then slow roll your shift..
Nice video! I just got a 3rd gen with a manual and you describe the rev hang perfectly. I’m sad to see that it is carrying into the 4th gen. I’ve gotten used to driving with it but getting up to speed fast reminds me of the flaw. I’m planning on getting the OTT tune soon. I’ve heard a lot of reviews saying that it helps with rev hang. Maybe they will come out with a tune for the new gen tacomas too
That’s the plan on my end as well. Reaching out this week. Couldn’t agree more, quick acceleration shows the issue for sure. Thanks for the kind words Trey and congrats on your 3rd gen!
I see you have the big 14" screen there, not sure if this is a canada thing, but I don't see it available here as an option, which is wack, but I def am leaning towards manual, always wanted to own manual, learnt it as a kid and loved it but never owned my own! I just wish it had more features like the TRD off road Premuim like cameras and 14" screen
@@MoneyShift Awesome! I cant wait to see it. You have already sold me on the manual. I just cant figure out what color I like the best. (Bronze oxide, ice cap, celestial silver - leaning towards bronze oxide)
I test drove a manual taco just for fun and was impressed with the gearing .. I’ve been driving manual since I got my license around 98.. but I’m tired of manual lol ended up with taco sport and loving it.. very good review sir 👍🏼.. oh yeah love the rev match and the extra help.
