This video will explain the basics of replacing the starter motor in your Toyota Tacoma. The first generation tacomas (1995-2004) should all be pretty similar to this, with the starter motor located inside the wheel.

After watching 3 other videos about how to do this, I was convinced that I would have to just take my 99 Tacoma to the shop. Your video changed my mind. I think I can do this. I'm gonna give it a shot this weekend. Thanks for the great video.

This video got me through the five-hour ordeal of installing a new starter. It was my first starter removal and installation. The first two hours were figuring out my Toyota's tire jack apparatus, jacking up the truck, removing the wheel, securing the jack stands, taking out the dip stick, and removing those two bolts. Even with a swivel joint and extension, the bolts presented a real psychological challenge. They were hard to find in the engine muck and it was hard to get enough leverage to loosen them up. I found that my old starter had a ring around the bolt for attaching the battery cable designed to accept a tooth, locking it in place, which the replacement did not have. This meant that the tooth blocked me from getting a good contact with the battery cable. I solved this with three washers so that the battery cable could fit flush with the washers. After the whole procedure was done and the engine started up, my engine light came on which was a worry, but after driving around for twenty minutes the engine light turned off. Thanks for the help.

98 4WD Auto, Removing the two 14mm bolts to the passenger side engine mount and jacking the engine up gave me enough space to fish it out of the fender area. I also removed a brake line mounting bracket and the Trans dipstick bolt/tube.

I'm so glad I came across your video tutorial! My father's 95 Taco (2.4L L4 Base model) needs its starter replaced. Any pointers you would recommend before I start working on his vehicle?

FYI Never buy a replacement from a box store get that one rebuilt at a reputable starter alternator shop. It’s a Nipedenso really good high end Japanese starter motor. The box store sells you a cheap Chinese knock off.

I LOVE YOUR NEW INTRO! Your video was great- it has all the right info and is presented well, but bro, that intro! It's concise enough and conveys enough information that it would be approved by the London ministry of whatever you want.

I bet the only problem with the starter is the solenoid contacts on the inside which cost like $40 and are easy to change.

If y’all are having a hard time fishing the starter out, try dropping the sway bar out of the way. It’s a lot easier that way.

So to unscrew the main bolts to the starter you only used two open end wrenches?

Thank for showing how to replace Prado 3.4 starter, I watched a few different videos about to replace it but you and others never show us which way we can take it out from the truck and put it back. Can you show us how?
@mateobrainardo4770
@mateobrainardo4770 Год назад
The reason why they never show you how to actually get it OUT of the truck, is because it takes two hands, two hours, and a WHOLE BUNCH of cuss words. You’re better off to take small bites of this shit sandwich, slowly and methodically remove that damn thing. If you try to rush it, you’ll just end up mad, skinned knuckles, bruised hands, and pissed that you’ve started this project/job in the first place. Take it easy, you’re saving $600 bux if you had to take it to a shop, (09.2022) which you may or may not trust. Most shops I know are in it for the money, pay their mechanic SHIT for a nickle, work them like a dawg, and don’t really care if their mechanic never torques their bolts properly, (bolts come loose and fall out), or damage something else (the exhaust pipe, or oxygen sensor), because that means more work (and MORE superbuxx $$$) for them. Fuck the shops. If you own a Tacoma, you should wrench on it yourself.

The new starter looked longer. Did you replace the 1.4KW original starter with the cold crank version (2.0KW)? I'm thinking about finding a 2.0KW reman and putting it in my 96. That way it will start up faster in the cold weather. I believe they made a 1.4, 1.8, and 2.0 version.

This video is for a manual trans. For automatics, the transmission fill tube must be unbolted from the engine and pulled to the side, otherwise there isn't enough room to pull the starter out.

The point of this video was that with a bit of effort, you too can be a shade tree mechanic, and save yourself around $600 bux if you do the job yourself. If you need a video to show you every little detail, such as removing every exact bolt, you shouldn’t be doing this project/job. I’ll be surprised if you get the truck jacked off properly... DONT DIE bro! Nawt werth it
