First I was like; I can do that, I can do that, and then the special tools and the grinder came out, I was like; never mind, moving on to a different project.
Thanks for your comment! The original drum brake of your 2018 surely works okay. A disc brake in the rear, just like FJ Cruiser will bring a better experience. Safety drive is always the best!!!
Unique Power International i totally agree with you mate it offers both the drums and disk brake all in one piece this is what toyota should have been doing with the tacoma, tundra and 4runner also the sequoia
@@UniquepowerTwUnique-Power Explain “how” it will be a better driving experience, and what does “safety drive” mean,..we should take your unexplained opinion that all this work is beneficial but yet you cannot spell correctly much less proof read.
Ahh..the infamous “Rear disc conversion”..brakes turn into steel braided lines turns into turns into axles, turns into locker turns into three linked turns into full on LS swapped trailered buggy queen..😁
How come the guy pressing in the new bearings with the hydraulic press had his face about a foot away from the axle shaft/bearing and he wasn't wearing safety glasses or goggles? Not a smart idea. Just my opinion.
That was cool. Way over my capabilities. I’ll stick to drums on my Tacoma and suck it up. Lol. I just hate doing drum brakes but not as much as converting them
FYI... another channel has re-uploaded this video and hasn't given you credit for it. Ditmike is the channel name, and the video is titled "$300 Brake Upgrade Vs $2000 Big Brake Kit"
Good morning to all. 1/2 comments for this video. My first min watching I personally wasn't happy what I noticed right away especially being in a shop/exc. Z87 were made for a reason. they are safety glasses. I attended Auto-Tech at MJC in California. My True Story, exactly in this video, I went to my hands on Brake class. the reason for this one, if you forward to I believe 6+ min were the two are changing the rear drum. I'm up to get my credit for the class, well during the step by step process i was removing the main spring, as I was using the spring pliers I had to pull on the pliers towards my l-shoulder, my partner happened to be were, l.s.s, both rear drums were rusted. Pliers slipped { picture if it if you can} remember we're my partner was standing at, we both didn't except it. Right to his left eye directly. Dazed him for a good 5+ min. this was back in 08.
Thanks for your command. This video is taken by our friend, we are design house, they work for the car repair for several decades. Normally, this procedure is same as O.E. repair guide, and by individual worker. The man behind is the boss and the operator is the apprentice. I believe that they need a goggle to protect their eyes. We don't suggest people D.I.Y. for vehicle like Tacoma, to repair SUV or light truck need cutting and high pressure hydraulic machine. Any commands are welcome : info@unique-power.com.tw Your suggestion will make us to create more better product.
We checked that the direction of the cable into the drum is vertical compares to parallel for current model. Our kit only supports year 2005 on. The Hilux has the same problem, too. Sorry that we couldn't support previous model.
Please refer to our website on "Technical data / Type 1" category for installation guide. Or more about Tacoma at : unique-power.com.tw/toyota-tacoma-drum-brakes/
Our conversion kit could be installed on the Polo 6C. Please contact us at info@unique-power.com.tw with your location for quotation. Thank you very much!
By changing the rear to disc brakes a new brake booster and master cylinder that can support them is needed. Otherwise, this is not a proper installation.
The drum cylinder for most pickup is 13~15/16 inch. (Tacoma is 15/16 inch) Our cylinder for rear calipers diameter are 43~45mm. Under our calculation and about 2 years' road test, original master works with our new caliper very well. Please send your technical inquiry to : info@unique-power.com.tw for more details. Thanks!
In here, many buses change drum brake to disc brake. Because they could change the shoe of the drum 2~3 buses only in one day. For the disc brake, less than 20 minutes to complete one bus.
The drum brake are more reliable for vehicles with heavy loads. The only disadvantage of the drum is that it's lag phenomenon. "Drum in Disc" is the best for pickup. Thanks!
where and how can I buy this kit? this is by far the nicest rear disk conversion I have seen for the tacoma! I found a UPI web page, but I do not see any buy kit options?
Shouldn't let your mechanics use their hands as hammers to hit wrenches. Can cause some pretty bad nerve damage. And thanks to work comp you end up owning those busted hands.
Definitely not worth the trouble. Tacoma still has drums in the rear cause there are no issues and they work well. For the amount of work required to do discs I don't see any benefits to it.
Our kit only applies to the Tacoma models after 2004. Models before 2004, the cable entered the drum mechanism vertically and then parallel. The difference is too big, and we are still looking for a solution, thank you!
I have read some of the comments about why to convert drum to disc....well let me tell you this...I have a hunt camp and the last 400 m or so is a real muddy potholed road....I am talking real mud holes and so when I leave my truck at the lake for several days and then come back.....my rear wheels are locked...locked so bad that i drag them in 4 lo and they dont turn a millimetre. I have taken my truck to the dealer and they recommend a brake cleaning....so i got a taco 4x4 to go to camp and off road. Disc brakes are self cleaning more or less...I will ditch the drums within the year or so. My drum brake lock is caused by a fault with the ABS and this only happens with mud and water....this is what one mechanic i work with told me. I am not sure why this happens but it has happened 2 or 3 times now in last 2 years. I wonder if anyone else has had this problem with a taco truck?
Normally, drum brake is more resistant to the mud. But weak to the water. It will be effective after drawing the water out. Drum brake is efficient only heat and water are its weak points.
Our current kit only supports Tacoma year 2005 on. The direction of the cable into the drum is parallel compares to vertical of the previous model. To open molds for this kit needs a certain quantity to cover all the cost. The Hilux has the same problem, too. Sorry that we don't have a kit support your vehicle.
Consulted our engineer. Their lengths are basically different, and we have not made this attempt. In theory, parts of the same year can be installed with a high probability. If you do this, a new problem will occur, that is, the wheelbase of the front and rear axles will be different. Thank you!
Never, Asbestos is not legal in our country. Asbestos products are not allowed to import to almost all the countries by law. All parts are made by local to ensure its best quality even the cost is very high. Our raw material of disc is much higher than the finished one from China. It's a hard to make a choice but quality issue is no compromise for us. Thank you!
In order to use the original cable and the original rim, a smaller drum brake is needed. For matching the new drum, the new disc and calipers have to be redesigned. Yes, this is a brand new system.
+Unique Power International X-runner is lugs = 5, pitch = 114.3, center hole diameter = 60. The center hole is too small for our current mold, not available in this moment.
+Nguyen Jade We are planning to study conversion kit for Ford Ranger. (We have taken the measurement of this vehicle already) Unfortunately, we could not find the parts no. of this bearing. Is anyone can help us to find out the part no. and where to purchase ?
hi thanks for you reply I mentioned it cause I'm tired of changing rear drums shoes on my 2010 Hyundai accent and sad cause nobody sells upgrade kits for my accent
+Dario Mendoza Agree with you. In drum in disc system, shoe only functions for parking. Changing brake pad and disc is much easier and disc brake can reduce the nose drive phenomenon. We need to collect more users to support molds and toolings' cost. Thank you.
Sorry, do you mean 2020 Tacoma? In our region, Tacoma does not imported by Toyota, only imported by parallel importers, which is not so common. Yes, our kit fits latest Tacoma perfectly.
To create a new model needs to invest new molds and produce them in certain quantity. We are trying very hard to expand our model list now. Sorry that we are not able to supply this model at this moment.
As our understanding, Toyota Rush is the same with Daihatsu Terios. Please refer to our video : Daihatsu Terios. Or our website : www.unique-power.com.tw for more detail.
Apart for the look, i don't see why anyone would do this kit. Huge job to install, prob pretty expensive too. Drums last way longer. Only reason i see is for someone that does serious towing but then again you trailer will most likely have brakes or youd need a bigger truck.
Thanks for your commands, I agree with you in some points. You could compare Tundra/FJ vs. Tacoma ; F-series vs. Ranger ; old colorado vs. current colorado to find out the difference. There are too many examples from car manufacturers and easy to find out. Our video is close to a bearing exchanging process as a repair process alway does and showing all the details. If you have a chance to drive a 4 discs Tacoma, you might willing to tell us some new experiences. Thank you!
This kit fits Tacoma from year 2005 to current Tacoma. The 4runner is based entirely off of the Toyota Hilux. Need to do more research on it, no 4runner in our region. Please contact info@unique-power.com.tw for more information. Thank!
If you want to do a drum to disc conversion on a Tundra, check out Silver Mine Motors. They have a great kit. As with all disc brake conversion, the assembly of the emergency brake is a real pain. I suggest placing the axle assembly in a vertical jig, ( I used a tall traffic cone) to stop the pieces from falling while attempting to assemble. Afterward, just install the axle. Makes the job much easier. I also recommend replacing the axle bearings and seals. When the old one is pressed out, the old backing plate will come off as well. One thing of importance to remember, there is a right side and left side axle and, if you reverse the anti-lock brake gear, the computer will think you are going backwards.
It gains more than you could image. When a very high friction pad is chosen on this kit, the rear even locks before the front. (The rear should never lock before the front, too much improvement is dangerous)
Is this drum to disc conversion kit compatible with 2002 Toyota Tacoma. The 2002 - 2004 appear to have the same setup, only differs with the 2005 model year.
Thank you for reminding. It's not possible to contain all the processes for one video in 3~5 minutes. Convert one kit is a slightly complicated than O.E. changing the bearing.
Total braking power should be the same when stops the same vehicle.Replacement frequency depends on the extent of front and rear sharing. When the rear does more jobs for the vehicle, the font will last longer and perform a better total braking. Consider of the heat problem, disc brake is more reasonable and more reliable.
Looks like a great kit. Have a question. why did you grind on the Axel in? i have a 2007 Tacoma trd sport 4x4 4.0 v6 with tow package. How much for the kit?
Thanks for your compliment. To grind is to take the rest part of bearing off and not damage the Axle. Price issue please contact : info@unique-power.com.tw for detail. Thanks!
