The issue of intercity transit buses or "trotro", the government should value and buy out all the buses and employ all the trotro drivers on "Aayololo" services, that way both price and vehicles can be managed well thereby creating sanity in the transport system.

Sharriff, that's all a ploy for the west. Most working Ghanaians can not afford to purchase a vehicle assembled in Ghana; by Toyota, Nissan and VW The import duty alone at the port is sheer stupidity,, wake up!

Shalif, this news regarding the band of used cars, ten years older is very sad and very deceiving, why do I say this? Various automotive inversters are dictating to the government to do this, in order to indirectly force Ghanians to buy new car manufactured in Ghana. These same inverters like Toyota still sell used vehicles in Japan. Some of them are 15 - 20 years old, still on the road USA, and Canada, European countries as well. When our leaders agree to this, they are Ghanians suffers. I hope, my dear honorable President Nana Addo-Akofo do not allow this demand from Toyota manufacturing Company and all others who desire to set any manufacturing industrie not just Ghana, but Africa.

I think many Ghanaians would be more than happy to be able to purchase cars built and distributed in market, the issue however is that these domestically assembled cars are not priced for the African market, in some cases, they are even more expensive than an equivalent in Europe (brand new). There needs to be an active primary and secondary market with appropriately priced cars that are produced domestically for the industry to thrive.

who does that Japanese guy think he is? he is assembling cars, not manufacturing . all those assembled parts are being imported so from a trade deficit standpoint, what is the difference of importing damaged cars vs importing parts??? For the time being, Ghana can manufacture individual parts until the industry can manufacture the entire car through smoldering plants by all car brands. Then they can institute a ban. The local auto industry is new with limited options. how can you force ghanaians to pay $30k USD car from one particular car brand?

There they go. I have said before that the five auto manufacturing companies that flocked to Ghana were strategically to stymie the growth of Kantanka. Now they are calling the shots. When we needed them most, they didn’t show up. It was ONLY the fear of an African brand taking over the regional market that motivated not one or two, but as many as five to rush to set up assembling, not manufacturing plants in Ghana. Unfortunately, Africans are still at the dark side of how the west operates. Instead of the NPP government investing heavily into KANTANKA as every automotive manufacturing country does, the NPP’s interest is to help foreigners to have advantage in our space. These companies are already established, powerfully leading in the business. Alan Kyeremateng and the NPP are bragging about it without regard to the long term harm done to Kantanka.

Incentives or subsidies on sale of locally assembled cars may push Ghanaians to buy more of the new Toyota brands. A good exchange program can equally do same because the brand new cars are too expensive for locals to buy even on hire-purchase agreements. Toyota should also meet with well established companies to set contracts with staff on purchase arrangements. These will all help in pushing residents to purchase new vehicles in Ghana.
