So why am I editing and shortening some of my older videos?? My main goal is to condense them to only show the key points. Not for views, but for that guy that's really stuck and needs some quick guidance on a subject. He doesn't have time for a 40 minute case study but definitely does for a 10-15 minute, key points type video. I had this EXACT scenario happen with me when I blew out a brake chamber in my RV. I needed help and I needed it now!! I know my community will benefit from these.

Right on ! Crucial lessons learned from this one !! 1. If 11 volts is on a sensor signal wire DO NOT UTILIZE the jump it to ground test … and , 2. during snap throttle revs TPS(v) never moved on scan data due to slow scan data updates ! Wowza !! Glad you teach us about significant repair process hazards as these two !! 😅 🙌🏼

Nice find there! Too bad the owner fired the parts cannon at the problem. Imagine how many unnecessary parts get sold every year - I'd bet the amount is staggering! Missed my window for TST. Wanted to meet you, and several other RU-vidrs there. Probably just as well, since I went to do a spill n fill on the rear diff of the '07 Silverado, and found chunks taken out of the spiders gears, and one side gear (probably part of the G80 "Grenade Lock" got run through them). Truck is going to be on the lift a couple weeks as I eagerly await the arrival of a new air-actuated OX Locker (2 weeks before it ships). I shouldn't have any more diff problems after that, so long as I get my setup correct. Had I signed up, I might have missed the event and lost the money! That would've been a bad day! Man, the weird things we see in this industry! I'll blame the eBay Special on this one. I've used those Jet modules before, and they're absolute garbage; nothing more than a signal interrupt with an interpretive signal generator. Nothing says performance like latency! I'm super-stoked; just started ADAS training, and I'm starting to come across a whole new breed of problems. "Verifying your repair" is now a harrowing experience... Just let go of the steering wheel in traffic and pray! LOL

My TPS, Coolant temp sensor and ECT (Electronic Controlled Transmission) module are all on the same 5v reference signal (IDL). I'm reading 12 volts at the TPS but if I unplug the ECT it drops down to 4.95 volts where it should be. Does this indicate a bad ECT? Why would a ECT increase voltage on the IDL wire? Any help would be appreciated.

Future reference for all, depending on the pin size, a pen can be used to straighten the pin up. Just remove the ink first. I can not take credit for this, saw it on a computer tech video beforehand I think, or it was a magazine.... Don't completely remember.

General rule of thumb, if someone added something to their vehicle , chances are its going to create problems farther down the road. Wow! A bent pin. The thing was, it had been running that way. My guess is it happened the last time someone unplugged that unit. They never bothered checking what they did. That cost the owner money!

Great video and testing methods. Just wanting to clarify when you said not to jump the signal to ground, you meant the sensor ground? As you had already grounded the signal wire previously through a test light to ground.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 5 лет назад
I was referring to my signal circuit integrity stuff that I teach in my book and classes. In this case with scan data fixed @5v, forcing the signal low by jumping it to ground or sensor ground would have caused some bad things to happen! Prime example of why a resistor should be used when doing these integrity tests. Oh which I've found my incandescent test light works in place of the resistor.

Hey Paul, I need your opinion on something. I got a 1999 jeep GC Laredo 4.0L straight 6. It already had the infamous crank sensor no start...tested and replaced. Now 6 months later I'm getting MIL lamp flashing (at idle or driving city or highway). Today I checked it out again in driveway. Had it at idle..when the MIL began flashing. I had a mid level scanner attached at the time looking at data and noticed that things were normal until the MIL started flashing. At the same time as the flashing, ALL the fuel trim data and 02 data went down and stayed close to ZERO (0.080). So the FT dropped to ZEROs, the MIL flashed constantly, BUT the jeep WAS NOT exhibiting any symptoms of a misfire! NO shaking, NO bucking, NO stalling...NOTHING! I also read codes. There was a misfire code, BUT it WASN'T current. Any quick opinions? I know these Jeeps are infamous- that's why I drive GM and the wife has the Jeep.( though I pay in the long run).
@IsshmanGarcia
@IsshmanGarcia 5 лет назад
@Jimmy S Thanks for the reply. I have also used my Snap On scan tool and pulled up misfire counters. Any time I watched the counters it was either the 5 and 6 cylinders and another time it showed the 1 cylinder, but NEVER showed the 3 cylinder acting up. I do have a copy of that TSB as well, but since I never seen anything on the number 3 I didn't use that fix. Maybe I'll insulate all the injectors...its cheap enough.

gritting my teeth as you bend that pin back into position. Wondering if putting a bit of heat onto a bent pin with a small soldering iron ( not alot, just some ) would help reduce breakages.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 5 лет назад
It didn't break and the amount of heat you would need to aid this would cause issues internal to the circuit board!

@@ScannerDanner i didnt feel the need for an exclamation mark when presenting my idea i arrived at from using critical thinking and having experience in electronics and being an electrical fitter/ mechanic which means i have knowledge of metal ductile and malleable qualities. Of course I considered the heat hence my suggestion. Not sure why you thought it necessary but seems you didnt read properly and consider more the idea. After having watched many of your videos and built respect for you in the way you approach analytical thinking and teach your students have to say I am disappointed in the tone of response. I guess I'll now be advised to not comment, watch or even unsubscribe if I don't like it, if in the past people had been scared to offer up ideas due to responses as such then we would not be where we are in many ways and it has historically happened. But it seems typical when someone thinks outside the box and becoming more prevalent.

I hate text, you can't gauge it. You definitely read too much into my exclamation mark. Those pins are simply soldered to the circuit board, if you heat the pin, you'll risk de-soldering the connection to the board. Hence the exclamation. Make sense? It wasn't a pointed exclamation at you. Cool?

@@ScannerDanner my apologies for the misinterpretation. I still stick by my idea, where the pin has bent has started a work hardening process making it more likely to fracture when bent back again but some heat, and it wont be anywhere near enough to desolder the pin, would assist in making the pin more malleable and less prone to breaking. I know this probably sounds a bit over the top but when you consider it may just save alot of future hassle then wheres the harm. Its not like a powerful soldering iron held on their for a minute and it wouldnt take much heat to help. If I had a bunch of old pcm's I'd sit there, bend pins and try the idea, see how many break without the heat and then try the heat and see the result with the pcm opened up to view the pin solder point, but thats me, I have time but no old pcm's lol. Might visit a wreckers and do an experiment. Not sure how often bent pins happen but have seen this problem in a couple of videos previously so maybe its not worth the effort.

No problem man, all good and all valid points. I guess I wouldn't trust myself enough with the proper amount of heat to use.

Focus on your TPS for sure. It is one of the inputs used by the engine computer to control idle speed.

old Toyota has a 12V power source at TPS ?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner Год назад
Yes sir, but it's not a direct battery source. It runs through a resistor in the ECM first. But it is a 0-12v on/off switch input signal (idle contact switch) used all the way back into the early 80s
@forgetfulme1719
@forgetfulme1719 Год назад
@@ScannerDanner Thanks, Master, I know it comes from ECM with key on and changes from 0 to 12 V sweeping from idle to WOT, instead of the TPS with signal, 0 to 5V, that r used in later cars described, hence my confusion.
