The title is often listed as “John Cobb drives the Napier-Railton on a record run at Brooklands”, or, in other places it’s called “John Cobb in the 24-litre Napier-Railton taking the 'bump' on the Members' Banking in 1935.”
And the photographer… is unknown.
The Napier-Railton was an airplane-engined car, built on the grounds of the Brooklands Circuit in Weybridge, England. It set the the all time track record, averaging 143.44mph, a record that was never broken.
In this amazing photo, it’s hitting the bump on the banking, and has all four wheels off the ground. Once I got home, I thought it would be a worthwhile challenge to see if I could find out who the photographer was, and put credit where credit is due.
So I contacted the Brooklands Museum to see if they can help me track down the photographer.

And this was accomplished with a camera capable of making 1 fps.

thanks so much! I have a lot of stuff planned, it can be hard to find the time, but I do enjoy making these and hearing from people, so thanks for commenting 👍

absolutely! I would love if any of my photos are still around in 90 years, but I'm not holding my breath 😆

It was likely taken by a full-time press photographer. In those pre-copyright days the rights of the image would be taken by the employer and any credit would soon be lost.

Always a pleasure to watch your videos! Can we expect anything from your trip to Goodwood Members' Meeting?

Thanks Michal! Unfortunately I didn't shoot any video at Goodwood, but I really hope to make it back there and do a video

Great to see your video! I have sent you an email with a little more information on the car and Brooklands in general. I was lucky enough to sit in the car earlier this year at Goodwood at the Goodwood Festival of Speed after chatting with the Director of The Brooklands Museum, Allan Winn. The Napier Railton raced between 1933 and 1937 inclusive and there are many pictures taken of the car in a number of races from the same place as the photograph of its record run as well as photographs of many other cars from the same place, such as Tim Birkins Single Seater Betley and the Walter Hassan Bentley Special amongst many others. Brooklands closed for good in 1939.

So it could be one of 7 or more photographers, from that day (whichever year it was). Not that hard... It also looks like those 2 photographs were taken on different laps, going by the position of the trailing car (and person in the background). So the Napier-Railton was probably consistency getting air. Love a great mystery, all the best in resolving it.

Yes, I totally agree about the two photos likely being from the same session but different laps. Based on the track imperfections, I think it got air on every lap at speed. Thanks for watching and for your insight!
